To play American Truck Simulator online, install the third-party TruckersMP multiplayer mod, link it to the Steam account that owns ATS, and start the game through the TruckersMP launcher. TruckersMP is a community service rather than an official SCS Software multiplayer mode.

Check these conditions before downloading anything. Missing one of them commonly causes the launcher to reject the game or fail to start.

TruckersMP is not an SCS Software feature. SCS has acknowledged the community project, but no official SCS multiplayer mode is established by the material available for this guide. You therefore need the TruckersMP account and launcher even though you already own ATS.

Check the supported game version first
Version compatibility is the most important check to make before updating ATS. TruckersMP’s download page publishes the ATS builds its current launcher supports. Open that list and note the exact number, including the trailing letter where one is shown. The page has included ATS 1.61.3.1s; because support changes over time, read the live list immediately before changing your Steam installation.
If Steam updates ATS to a build that is not on TruckersMP’s list, the mod may refuse to launch while it is waiting for a compatible release. Do not assume that an update affecting another SCS game leaves ATS usable; that specific interaction is not confirmed here. The safe procedure is to check both the launcher message and the current TruckersMP version list rather than relying on an old guide or video.

- Open the TruckersMP registration site and create an account.
- Use the option to connect Steam, then sign in to the Steam account that owns American Truck Simulator.
- Complete any account or email verification requested by TruckersMP.
- Make your Steam profile and game details visible if registration says it cannot verify ownership or playtime. A community guide says both ATS and ETS2 should show at least two hours of recorded play; because that is not independently confirmed as a current official rule, treat it as a troubleshooting check rather than a guaranteed requirement.
Keep the TruckersMP credentials separate from your Steam password, and sign in only through the real TruckersMP and Steam login pages. The mod needs your Steam ownership connection to determine that you are entitled to use ATS.

Install TruckersMP on Windows
Download the launcher
Download the current TruckersMP installer from the project’s download page. Community instructions refer to the installer as TruckersMP-Setup.exe. The launcher is intentionally small: its updater downloads only files that have changed, so later updates do not require a complete re-download of the mod.
Run setup and choose ATS
- Run
TruckersMP-Setup.exeand allow Windows to install the launcher. - Start TruckersMP. Use the game selector to choose American Truck Simulator, not Euro Truck Simulator 2.
- If the launcher finds ATS automatically, confirm the displayed installation path. If it does not, use the manual path option.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click American Truck Simulator, choose Properties, open Local Files, and select Browse. Copy or note the folder that opens, then enter that folder in TruckersMP’s path selector.
- Click Download Updates and wait until the launcher reports that the required files are complete. Do not close it during the update.
TruckersMP hooks into the ATS process to add its multiplayer functions. It therefore needs more access than a texture or sound mod. Windows security software can flag the launcher or block its network access; check the exact executable and publisher information before allowing an exception, and do not disable protection globally.
Join an ATS server
- Start ATS from the TruckersMP launcher rather than from the normal Steam Play button.
- Wait through the game and SCS logos. A custom TruckersMP login screen should appear.
- Enter your TruckersMP username and password.
- If prompted, read and accept the TruckersMP rules. You must approve them to continue.
- Select an available server from the server list. Read its displayed status, capacity, and any connection or rule notice before joining.
- Click Drive. The game should load your profile into the selected multiplayer server.
If ATS opens normally without the TruckersMP login screen, it was started through Steam or the desktop shortcut instead of the mod launcher. Exit the game and repeat the launch from TruckersMP.

What to do when the launcher cannot find ATS
Confirm the path is the game folder
The selected directory must be the folder containing the ATS executable and game files, not the parent Steam folder and not the TruckersMP installation folder. Use Steam’s Properties → Local Files → Browse route to open the authoritative directory, then select that same folder in the launcher.
Check the selected title
TruckersMP supports more than one SCS game. A path can look valid while the selector is still set to ETS2. Switch the selector explicitly to American Truck Simulator, save the path, and run Download Updates again.
Verify the Steam account
The Steam account linked to TruckersMP must be the one that owns ATS. If you have several Steam accounts, sign out and reconnect the account that contains the game license. A public profile and visible playtime can also be necessary for automatic verification according to the community setup guide.

Troubleshoot common connection failures
“Unsupported game version” or an update loop
Compare the exact ATS build shown by Steam with the versions listed on TruckersMP’s download page. If Steam has moved you to a newer build that is not listed, the mod has not yet caught up or your launcher is out of date. Close ATS, reopen TruckersMP, run Download Updates, and check the support list again. Avoid following an old video that names a different build; the official TruckersMP knowledge base and current download page take priority over older community guides.

The launcher starts, then ATS closes
- Confirm that ATS is launched from TruckersMP and that the selector points to the correct executable.
- Run the launcher’s update check again so every changed mod file is present.
- Check that .NET Framework 4.7.2 or newer is installed.
- Temporarily test whether security software is blocking the launcher, then create a narrow allow rule for the verified TruckersMP program instead of disabling protection entirely.
- Read the current TruckersMP knowledge-base installation and launcher article before changing Steam files; its instructions supersede the older guide used by many videos.
Login fails even though ATS is installed
TruckersMP authentication uses the TruckersMP account, while ownership checking uses the linked Steam account. Confirm both credentials, reconnect Steam if the account link is stale, and ensure your Steam profile can display the game and its recorded playtime. Do not create a second TruckersMP account until you have checked which account is linked, because the duplicate account will not inherit the original link.
No server appears or the connection drops
Make sure the internet connection is working and that the launcher can complete its update check. If the server list is empty during a service outage, wait and retry rather than repeatedly reinstalling ATS. A firewall or security suite can also block the launcher’s network traffic; permit the verified application on the networks you trust.

The game opens but multiplayer features are missing
This usually means the normal ATS executable was started without the TruckersMP injection. Quit to desktop, launch TruckersMP, choose ATS in its selector, complete Download Updates, and start the game from that launcher.
Linux and macOS options
TruckersMP’s native launcher is Windows-first. Linux and macOS users rely on unofficial compatibility projects, so their setup, reliability, and maintenance can change independently of TruckersMP and SCS.

On either non-Windows platform, first make sure ATS itself runs correctly in the chosen Steam compatibility layer. Then follow the compatibility project’s current instructions for pointing it at the native Steam library and TruckersMP files. A Windows troubleshooting step cannot be assumed to work under Wine, Proton, or CrossOver, and an update that works on Windows may temporarily break an unofficial wrapper.
Keep the installation working
- Check TruckersMP’s supported ATS version list before allowing a major Steam update.
- Start the game through TruckersMP whenever you want to join a server; use Steam directly for ordinary single-player sessions.
- Run Download Updates after the launcher reports a new mod release or after a failed start.
- Keep .NET Framework and Windows current enough to run the launcher, while avoiding unverified downloads of replacement files.
- Use the official TruckersMP knowledge base for installation changes. The commonly shared Steam guide is older and was written primarily for an ETS2/ATS setup; it may not reflect current labels or requirements.
- Read the selected server’s rules before driving. Multiplayer access is conditional on following those rules, and accepting them at login does not replace reading later rule updates.
Official status and expectations
TruckersMP provides the servers and the multiplayer modification; SCS Software provides ATS itself. The two are therefore separate services. An ATS update can require a TruckersMP update before the two work together, and a TruckersMP account is not the same as a Steam account. There is no published player-count statistic established for this guide, so server availability should be judged by the live launcher list rather than an assumed population figure.
The shortest reliable workflow is: verify the supported build, link the correct Steam account, install the current Windows launcher, select ATS, download updates, log in at the custom TruckersMP screen, choose a server, and press Drive.
