To connect to an Unturned server with Rocket RCON, install or enable RocketMod, turn on RCON in Rocket.config.xml, choose an available TCP port and strong password, restart the server, then open a Telnet-capable client such as PuTTY against the server’s external IP and that configured port. After the session opens, authenticate with login <your-rcon-password>. If the connection fails, check the active Rocket port, firewall, router forwarding and password before changing anything else.

What Rocket RCON does
Rocket RCON is RocketMod’s remote-console interface for an Unturned server. It uses a Telnet-style connection, allowing an administrator to send server-console commands without joining the game. The server must have RocketMod installed or enabled; an ordinary Unturned installation does not provide Rocket RCON by itself.

RCON is useful when the server is running unattended, when an administrator needs to restart or save it from another computer, or when staff should manage the server without receiving in-game access. It is not a substitute for Unturned permissions: commands that require administrator authority still depend on the account, command and loaded plugins involved.
What you need before connecting
- RocketMod on the server. Install or enable the server-side framework before editing its RCON settings.
- File or panel access. You need to stop the server and edit
Rocket.config.xml, either in the hosting panel or in the server files. - A free TCP port. Select the port Rocket will listen on and record it exactly.
- A strong, unique RCON password. Do not reuse a game, control-panel or personal password.
- Network access. Remote users need the server’s external IPv4 address or a DNS name, plus a firewall and, on a home network, router rules that permit the selected port.
- A Telnet-capable client. PuTTY is a common interactive choice; a hosting-panel console or another compatible RCON client can also work.
Make the first setup while you can still reach the machine locally or through the provider’s console. That gives you a recovery path if a firewall rule or XML edit prevents remote access.

Enable Rocket RCON in Rocket.config.xml
1. Stop the server cleanly
Stop the Unturned server from the host panel or its service manager before editing the configuration. Editing a live file can be overwritten when the process saves its settings, and a restart is required before the new listener is available.
2. Open the Rocket configuration
Locate Rocket.config.xml in the server files. Managed hosts normally expose it through a configuration-file editor; self-hosted operators will find it in the RocketMod configuration area. If several server instances exist, verify that you are editing the instance you intend to administer.
3. Enable the RCON element
The relevant element has the following shape:
<RCON Enabled="false" Port="21321" Password="changeme" ... />The exact surrounding attributes can vary by RocketMod build or host template. Change Enabled to true, replace the example password, and set Port to an unused port that your provider allows. Keep the XML syntax intact: preserve the quotation marks, the closing slash and any attributes you did not intend to change.
4. Choose and record the password
Use a long random password with mixed character types. Store it in a password manager rather than in a public chat, screenshot or shared document. Anyone who obtains this credential may be able to issue administrative commands, depending on the server’s command and permission setup.

5. Save and restart
Save the file, start the server and wait until it has completed its normal startup. The restart applies the RCON listener and the new password. If your host panel has a separate “save configuration” action, use it before starting the server.
Find the correct RCON port
Connect to the port explicitly shown in the active Rocket configuration or supplied by the hosting panel. Do not assume that the game port is also the RCON port.

Rocket’s RCON listener is read from Rocket’s own configuration or from the host’s Rocket settings. Those values may be different.
Some configuration documentation describes an RCON entry added through Commands.dat without an explicit port as defaulting to the game Port + 1. That convention is not a safe universal assumption for every Rocket installation or hosting panel. Treat the live Rocket.config.xml value, or the provider’s displayed RCON value, as authoritative.

If you change the port, restart the server and update every firewall, forwarding rule and client profile that used the old value.
Allow the port through the network
Server and hosting-provider firewall
Create an inbound rule for the selected TCP port. The rule must apply to the network interface and server instance running RocketMod. Some managed hosts require you to add the port in a control-panel network section rather than editing an operating-system firewall directly.

Open only the port you selected for RCON. Do not broadly expose unrelated game, file-transfer or administration services while troubleshooting.
Home-network router forwarding
For a server behind a home router, forward the RCON TCP port from the router’s public interface to the private IP address of the computer hosting Unturned. Give that computer a DHCP reservation or static local address so the forwarding target does not change.

Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A connection made from inside the same LAN can appear to work or fail differently because some routers do not support NAT loopback. Never use the private address as the destination for an Internet-based administrator.
Local or LAN-only administration
If the client is on the same machine, use the local address permitted by your setup. For a trusted LAN, use the server’s private address and restrict the firewall rule to the LAN subnet where practical. LAN access avoids Internet exposure but still requires the RCON password.
Connect with PuTTY
PuTTY’s Telnet mode provides the interactive terminal Rocket RCON expects.
- Open PuTTY on the administrator computer.
- In Host Name (or IP address), enter the server’s external IPv4 address or its configured DNS name.
- Enter the Rocket RCON port in Port. This is the Rocket value, not automatically the Unturned game port.
- Select Telnet as the connection type. Leave the session’s normal Telnet behavior unless your host documents another requirement.
- Select Open. A successful network connection should produce a Rocket console prompt or login interaction.
- At the prompt, enter the login command, replacing the placeholder with the password stored in
Rocket.config.xml:
login <your-rcon-password>Press Enter after the command. Do not include angle brackets; they indicate the value you must replace. If the password contains characters that your client handles unusually, type it exactly as stored and avoid pasting it into a shared terminal or recorded session.

After authentication, run a harmless command such as Help or Players. A response confirms both that the session is authenticated and that the server is processing commands.

Rocket and Unturned commands can depend on the server build and loaded plugins. Start with commands documented for your installation and confirm the spelling shown by Help.

Commands typed into the remote console do not need the chat prefixes used in-game. In-game administrators commonly use @ or / prefixes in chat, while server-console entry uses the command form itself. A plugin may add, remove or alter commands, so an unknown-command response is not necessarily a networking failure.
Choose an administration method

For occasional maintenance, a panel console may be the least exposed option. For repeat administration from a separate workstation, a Telnet client is straightforward once the port is correctly secured. Internet-facing RCON should be treated as a privileged service regardless of which client you choose.
Troubleshoot a failed connection
“Connection refused” or an immediate failure
- Confirm RocketMod is installed and enabled for this server instance.
- Reopen
Rocket.config.xmland verifyEnabled="true". - Check that the server was restarted after the edit.
- Verify the client port against the active Rocket
Portvalue, not the game port. - Check whether another service already occupies the selected port. Choose a free port and restart if necessary.
Timeout from an outside network
- Recheck the external IPv4 address or DNS record; do not use the server’s private LAN address.
- Allow the selected TCP port in the operating-system firewall and any host-panel firewall.
- On a home connection, confirm router forwarding points to the current private IP of the Unturned machine.
- Test from a separate network to avoid a router’s local loopback limitations.
- Ask the provider whether inbound custom TCP ports are restricted or whether the panel assigns a different RCON port.
Login rejected
- Use the password currently saved in
Rocket.config.xml, including capitalization and punctuation. - Make sure the password change was saved before the restart.
- Reconnect after restarting; an old session will not necessarily adopt a changed credential.
- Check that the client is reaching the intended server instance rather than another machine using the same address.
Login works but commands do nothing
- Run
Helpand check that the command exists in this server’s loaded modules. - Try
Playersto distinguish a command-specific issue from a dead session. - Check the server console for plugin errors or a module that failed during startup.
- Remember that in-game command permissions still apply where a command requires administrator authority.
- Confirm you are entering console syntax rather than chat syntax with an unnecessary
/or@prefix.
Secure the RCON service
RCON is an administrative control channel, not a public game feature. Use a unique random password and limit who receives it. Do not publish it in screenshots, tutorial videos, chat logs, shell history or shared configuration repositories.

- Restrict the firewall source range to known administrator addresses when your hosting environment supports source filtering.
- Prefer a VPN or private management network for a self-hosted server when practical, rather than exposing RCON to every Internet address.
- Keep RocketMod, Unturned and server plugins updated according to their supported versions.
- Remove old panel users, saved client profiles and forwarding rules when an administrator leaves.
- Rotate the RCON password after a suspected disclosure, save the new value, restart the server and update every authorized client.
- Review server logs for unexpected logins or commands, especially after opening a new Internet-facing port.
A strong password does not correct a wrong port or an unrestricted firewall rule, and a hidden port is not a replacement for authentication. Treat configuration, network filtering and credential management as separate controls.
A repeatable maintenance workflow
- Record the current Rocket RCON port and the server’s external address in a private operations note.
- Connect with the chosen Telnet client and authenticate using the password manager entry.
- Run
PlayersorHelpfirst to verify that the session is attached to the expected instance. - Send the maintenance notice with
Saywhen players need warning. - Use
Savebefore planned changes that could interrupt the server. - After maintenance, run a harmless verification command and close the client session.
- Document only the outcome and time; never place the password in the maintenance log.
This workflow separates connection testing from state-changing actions, making it easier to identify whether a problem is caused by networking, authentication or a particular plugin command.
