You can use Discord voice chat on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S by linking your Discord and Microsoft/Xbox accounts. There is no standalone Discord app to download on the console: once linked, you can join a Discord voice channel from the Xbox Guide or transfer a call from Discord on a phone or computer.
For the simplest setup, update your Xbox and link the accounts first. You only need the Xbox mobile app when transferring a call from Discord mobile or desktop—not when joining a channel directly from the console.
What connecting Discord to Xbox does
The integration has three separate functions. Linking accounts can show your Xbox GamerTag and game activity on your Discord profile; joining from Xbox lets you browse to a server and voice channel in the Xbox Guide; transferring moves a Discord call already in progress on a phone or computer to the console. Activity display is optional and is not required for voice chat.
Discord’s current instructions cover Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Menu names can shift with console or app updates, so if a label differs slightly, look for the same account-linking or Discord Voice option. The current English Discord and Xbox Connection FAQ was updated May 27, 2026.

What you need
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, signed in to the Microsoft/Xbox account you intend to link.
- A Discord account with access to the server and voice channel you want to use.
- An updated Xbox console; Discord says the console must be up to date for Discord Voice.
- A compatible headset or microphone if you want to speak or hear the call through the console.
- Permission for cross-network play and communication outside Xbox. Family or parental-control settings may limit these permissions.
- The Discord and Xbox mobile apps if you plan to transfer voice from a phone or desktop. The Xbox app is required for that transfer flow; it is not required to join Discord directly from the console.
Install the latest available app versions, but note that Discord does not specify a single app version number that applies to every device.
Link your Discord and Xbox accounts
Use whichever route is convenient. The account signed in on Xbox must be the same Microsoft/Xbox account authorized during linking.
From Discord on desktop or in a browser
- Open Discord and select the gear icon for User Settings.
- Choose Connections, then select the Xbox icon.
- Select Continue or Getting Started if prompted.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used on your Xbox.
- Review the authorization request and select Authorize and Continue.
Afterward, Xbox should appear in Discord’s Connections list. If you want your Xbox GamerTag or activity to appear on your Discord profile, enable the relevant display options there; they are not needed for voice chat.
From Discord on a phone
- Open Discord and tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Open settings with the gear icon, then tap Connections.
- Tap the Xbox icon or Add.
- Choose Getting Started or Continue, then sign in to your Microsoft account.
- Approve the authorization request.
The layout may differ between iOS and Android, but the route is through Discord settings and Connections.

- Open the Xbox mobile app and look for the Discord spotlight on its home page.
- Select it and choose Continue.
- Sign in to Discord, then sign in with the Microsoft account used on Xbox.
- Complete the authorization steps.
The spotlight may not appear in the same place for every app build or account. If it is missing, use the console route or Discord’s Settings > Connections route instead.
Join a Discord voice channel directly from Xbox
This is the shortest route if you are already at the console and know which server and channel you want.
- Sign in to Xbox with the Microsoft account linked to Discord.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Parties & chats.
- Select Discord Voice or Discord.
- Choose a Discord server, then choose the voice channel and join.
The Xbox Guide displays the active chat, participants, and audio controls. You can also report Discord voice-chat participants from the console.
Transfer an existing Discord call to Xbox
Transfer is useful when you are already in the right Discord channel and want to move the conversation to the console. Link the accounts first, and install both the Discord and Xbox mobile apps. The Xbox app is part of the transfer process even when the call starts on desktop.

Allow cross-network voice in Xbox privacy settings
If Discord voice is missing, cannot connect, or will not let you speak, check whether Xbox privacy settings permit communication beyond Xbox. Discord identifies these settings:
- Join cross-network play: Allow.
- Communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text: Everybody.
These options may be restricted by a parent or family organizer. If the settings are locked, ask the family organizer to review them or consult Xbox Support’s Discord voice guidance; do not try to bypass family restrictions.

Stream Xbox gameplay to Discord
Once your accounts are linked, you can start a game stream from the Xbox Guide while in Discord voice chat. Nitro is not needed to link accounts or use ordinary Discord voice. Discord says Nitro can unlock higher stream quality, up to 1080p; with the applicable Nitro benefit, Series X|S can stream at up to 60 frames per second, while Xbox One is limited to 30 FPS.
- Press the Xbox button and open Parties & chats.
- Select Discord, then choose a server and voice channel.
- Select Stream your game and adjust the available settings.
- Select Start stream.
This feature streams game audio and video, not non-game apps or Xbox services. If you switch apps or close the game, the stream pauses, but you remain in the Discord voice channel. Child accounts are not allowed to stream, and channel permissions or Xbox privacy settings can also prevent streaming. For Xbox streaming errors, see Xbox Support’s streaming troubleshooting.
Watch a Discord stream on Xbox
The current English Discord FAQ says Xbox users can watch a stream in an active Discord call: open the call’s member list in the Xbox Guide, select the profile of the person streaming, then choose Watch Stream. Older Discord documentation said stream viewing was not supported on Xbox; the current FAQ, updated May 27, 2026, reflects the newer capability.

Discord or Discord Voice does not appear
- Update the Xbox console.
- Confirm which Microsoft account is currently signed in on the console.
- In Discord, open User Settings > Connections and verify that the same Xbox account is linked.
- If the connection is old or incomplete, disconnect it and link the accounts again.
- Restart the console as a practical refresh attempt. If needed, update or reinstall the mobile apps, then try joining directly from Xbox rather than transferring.
The update, account match, and relinking checks align with Discord’s troubleshooting guidance. Restarting or reinstalling may help refresh a stuck connection, but neither is a guaranteed fix.

“Transfer didn’t work. Your console needs an update”
Update the Xbox console before trying the transfer again. Discord identifies an outdated console as the cause of this message.
Transfer opens an app but does not finish
- Check that Discord mobile and Xbox mobile are installed and signed in.
- Make sure the console is selected in the Xbox app and that the phone and console use the intended Xbox account.
- Confirm that the console is updated and the Discord/Xbox link is current.
- Check the cross-network and outside-communication privacy settings above.
- If transfer still stalls, join the channel directly from Xbox button > Parties & chats > Discord as a workaround.
Friends cannot hear you, or you cannot hear them
- Verify that you joined the intended voice channel and have permission to speak there.
- Check that the headset is connected to Xbox and selected as the audio device.
- Check that neither Discord nor the Xbox Guide shows you as muted or deafened.
- Confirm that Xbox privacy allows outside voice communication and that you are signed in with the linked Microsoft account.
- If you are in Xbox Party Chat, leave it before using Discord Voice on Xbox.
If headset audio fails in other Xbox chats too, investigate the console’s headset or audio setup. If only one Discord channel is affected, check that channel’s permissions and your account connection.
A stream will not start
- Verify the accounts are linked and the console is updated.
- Try streaming a game rather than a non-game app or Xbox service.
- Check Xbox privacy settings and Discord channel permissions.
- Check whether a child-account restriction prevents streaming.
- Do not treat Nitro as a prerequisite for voice chat; its relevance is enhanced stream quality and frame-rate options.
Discord Voice or Xbox Party Chat?
Use Discord Voice when your group organizes on Discord or includes friends playing on PC, PlayStation, mobile, or other platforms. Its server and channel structure can make cross-platform groups easier to manage. Xbox Party Chat is the simpler console-native choice when everyone is on Xbox, or when family settings prevent Discord communication.
They are alternatives rather than one combined room: you cannot remain in Xbox Party Chat while participating in Discord Voice on Xbox. Starting or transferring Discord Voice takes you out of Xbox Party Chat.
