How to Connect to Your VPS over SSH from a Chromebook

Use ChromeOS Linux Terminal and OpenSSH—or Google’s Secure Shell extension—to connect securely to a Linux VPS. Follow the exact commands for passwords, Ed25519 keys, custom ports, host fingerprints, and common errors.

Yes—you can administer a Linux VPS from a Chromebook. On supported Chromebooks, ChromeOS’s Debian-based Linux development environment gives you a normal Terminal and OpenSSH, so the essential command is ssh username@SERVER_IP. You need the VPS address, the correct remote username, and either a password or an SSH key. If your Chromebook cannot run Linux, Google’s Secure Shell browser extension is an alternative with SSH and SFTP support.

What you need before opening SSH

SSH is a secure, encrypted terminal connection from your Chromebook to the VPS. Gather these details first; an address without the matching account and authentication method is not enough to log in.

1. The VPS public address

Get the server’s public IPv4 address or its DNS hostname from your VPS control panel. Use the address that is reachable from the internet, not a private address such as one beginning with 10., 172.16. through 172.31., or 192.168. unless your provider has specifically arranged private networking.

2. The remote Linux username

The username depends on the image and provider. It may be a distribution-specific account or an account created by your administrator. Do not assume that the account is root; use the username shown in the provider’s connection instructions. A correct password or key for a different account will still produce an authentication failure.

3. The authentication method

Determine whether the VPS accepts a password, an SSH key, or both. Providers commonly recommend keys for durable access. If the server uses a nonstandard SSH port, record that number as well; the default is not guaranteed.

Enable the Chromebook Linux Terminal

ChromeOS can run a Debian-based Linux environment on supported devices without enabling developer mode. Google’s Chromebook Help gives this path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS.
  3. Open Developers.
  4. Choose Linux development environment.
  5. Follow the setup wizard and wait for the Terminal application to be created.

Google says setup can take “10 minutes or more.” Keep the Chromebook connected to power and online while the environment is created. The resulting Terminal is Debian-based and is separate from ordinary Chrome browser tabs.

On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, an administrator may disable Linux. If Linux development environment does not appear, the device may be unsupported or restricted by policy. Do not try to bypass management controls; ask the administrator whether Linux or an approved SSH tool is permitted.

Check that OpenSSH is available

Open the Chromebook’s Terminal app and check the SSH client:

ssh -V

If a version string appears, the client is ready. If the command is missing, install the Debian OpenSSH client from Terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install openssh-client

Accept the package installation when prompted, then run ssh -V again. You only need the client on the Chromebook; the VPS must be running an SSH service that accepts connections on the selected port.

Make the first connection with OpenSSH

The basic form is:

ssh username@SERVER_IP

Replace username with the VPS account and SERVER_IP with the public address or hostname. For example, if the account is admin and the address is 203.0.113.25, the command is:

ssh [email protected]

For a custom SSH port, add -p followed by the port number:

ssh -p PORT username@SERVER_IP

Substitute the actual number for PORT; do not leave the word PORT in the command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the private key is not the client’s default key, select it with -i:

ssh -i ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519 username@SERVER_IP

You can combine both options:

ssh -i ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519 -p PORT username@SERVER_IP

The command-line order is flexible, but the option values must immediately follow their options. A path beginning with ~ refers to your Linux environment’s home directory, not your Chromebook’s Downloads folder.

Handle the first host-key prompt safely

On the first connection to an address, OpenSSH normally reports that the authenticity of the host cannot be established and displays a host-key fingerprint. This fingerprint identifies the server key that SSH is about to save locally.

  1. Copy or read the fingerprint shown by OpenSSH.
  2. Compare it with a trusted fingerprint supplied by your VPS provider or server administrator, using a separate trusted channel if possible.
  3. Type yes only when the values match.

After confirmation, OpenSSH stores the host key in the Linux environment’s known-hosts file. Future connections compare the server’s key with that saved value. This check helps detect an unexpected server in the path; accepting an unverified fingerprint removes much of that protection.

When the server says its identification changed

A warning such as REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED means the key presented by that address differs from the key saved earlier. A legitimate rebuild that reuses the same IP address can cause this, but a man-in-the-middle attack can produce the same warning.

First verify the new fingerprint with the provider or administrator. Only after confirming that the replacement is legitimate should you remove the obsolete entry:

ssh-keygen -R SERVER_IP

Replace SERVER_IP with the address that produced the warning, then reconnect and verify the new fingerprint. Do not suppress or work around a changed-key warning without that verification.

Log in with a password

If password authentication is enabled, OpenSSH asks for the password after the host-key step. Type it carefully and press Enter. Terminals generally show no characters—not even dots or asterisks—while a password is entered. That is normal and does not mean the keyboard is inactive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the server rejects the password, confirm all of the following before repeatedly trying:

  • The username is the account created on the VPS, not a guessed default.
  • You are connecting to the intended address and port.
  • Password authentication is enabled on that server.
  • The account is allowed to log in over SSH.

Repeated failed attempts can trigger provider or server-side rate limits. If you do not know the password, use the provider’s console or recovery process rather than guessing.

Set up an Ed25519 SSH key

An SSH key pair avoids sending a reusable account password for each login. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH documentation recommends Ed25519 because its keys are shorter and require fewer computational resources. Generate the pair inside the Chromebook Linux environment:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519

The wizard asks where to save the key and whether to protect it with a passphrase. Keep the suggested private location unless you have a specific reason to change it, and choose a strong passphrase. The two resulting files are normally:

  • id_ed25519: the private key. Keep it secret and protected by the passphrase.
  • id_ed25519.pub: the public key. This is the part installed on the VPS.

Never paste the contents of the private key into a provider form or send it to an administrator. If someone obtains it and its passphrase, they may be able to authenticate as you.

Install the public key on the VPS

Use one of these secure provisioning routes:

  • Paste or upload the contents of id_ed25519.pub into the VPS provider’s SSH-key import control panel.
  • Use the provider console or another already-authorized session to append the public key to the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file.
  • If password login is currently available, use OpenSSH’s helper:
ssh-copy-id username@SERVER_IP

ssh-copy-id logs in using the available authentication method and appends the public half to that account’s authorized-key file. It does not make the private key available to the server. If you use a custom port, pass the corresponding SSH option through the command or install the key through the provider console instead.

Connect with the key

After the public key is installed for the correct account, connect explicitly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 username@SERVER_IP

Enter the key’s passphrase when prompted. The passphrase unlocks the private key locally; it is not the VPS account password. For a custom port, include -p PORT as well.

Choose between Terminal and a browser extension

Google documents a Secure Shell extension for ChromeOS that provides SSH and SFTP through a browser interface. It is useful when you prefer a graphical browser workflow or when Linux development environment is unavailable but extensions are allowed by the device administrator. It still needs the same VPS address, username, port, and authentication information.

Consideration ChromeOS Linux Terminal Secure Shell browser extension
Setup Enable Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers → Linux development environment; setup can take 10 minutes or more. Install and configure the extension in Chrome, subject to browser and administrator policy.
Connection style Standard Debian Terminal with OpenSSH commands. Browser-based SSH session.
Key selection Use normal OpenSSH paths such as -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519. Use the extension’s key-import or connection settings.
Port selection Use OpenSSH’s -p PORT. Enter the server’s configured port in the extension.
File transfer OpenSSH tooling is available in the Linux environment; use the command-line tools appropriate to your workflow. Google documents SSH and SFTP support.
Managed Chromebook Linux may be blocked by an organization. The organization may also block extension installation or external SSH connections.

Use the Linux Terminal when you want standard OpenSSH behavior, repeatable commands, scripts, or direct control over key files. Choose the extension when browser-based access is more practical and its policy and key-handling controls meet your needs.

Troubleshoot the common SSH failures

Permission denied (publickey)

The server reached the authentication stage but did not accept the offered key. Check these items in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the username in the command is the account whose key was installed.
  • Confirm that the matching public key, including the complete single line, is in that account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
  • Check that -i points to the intended private key, not the .pub file.
  • Make sure the server-side SSH directory, authorized-key file, and ownership or permissions have not been changed so the SSH service refuses to read them.
  • If the provider offers a console, inspect the SSH service logs there and verify that key authentication is enabled.

Connection timed out

A timeout usually means the Chromebook did not receive a response from that address and port. Verify the VPS public address, your Chromebook’s network access, provider firewall rules, and the port on which SSH is supposed to listen. If the VPS was recently stopped, rebuilt, or moved, recheck its current address in the provider panel.

Connection refused

This normally means the host was reachable but no SSH service accepted connections on the selected port. Use the provider’s web console to check that the OpenSSH service is running and that its configuration uses the port in your command. A firewall that actively rejects a port can produce a similar result.

No Linux option in Settings

The Chromebook may not support the Linux development environment, or an organization may have disabled it. Google explicitly notes that work and school users may be unable to use Linux. Ask the administrator about an approved Secure Shell extension or another managed access method.

The key works on one Chromebook but not another

Keys generated inside one Linux environment are not automatically present in another. Check the second Chromebook’s ~/.ssh directory and use the correct -i path. Do not transfer a private key through an untrusted chat or public storage service; generate a separate Ed25519 key for the second device and add its public half to the VPS account when practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security practices for Chromebook-to-VPS access

  • Verify the host fingerprint on the first connection and whenever a changed-key warning appears.
  • Prefer an Ed25519 key protected by a passphrase for regular administration.
  • Keep the private key only in the Linux environment or another protected storage location; place only the .pub file on the server.
  • Use the least-privileged VPS account that can perform the task instead of assuming that direct root access is necessary.
  • Record the correct address, username, and port in a secure password manager or administrator documentation rather than in a public note.
  • Remove access for old devices by deleting their corresponding public keys from the VPS account’s authorized_keys file.
  • On a shared Chromebook profile, sign out and protect the ChromeOS account; the Linux environment contains your SSH configuration and potentially your private keys.

Practical command checklist

These are the commands most Chromebook users need after Linux is enabled:

Task Command
Check the SSH client ssh -V
Connect with the default key or password ssh username@SERVER_IP
Connect on a custom port ssh -p PORT username@SERVER_IP
Choose a private key ssh -i ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519 username@SERVER_IP
Generate an Ed25519 pair ssh-keygen -t ed25519
Install a public key using an existing login ssh-copy-id username@SERVER_IP
Remove a verified obsolete host key ssh-keygen -R SERVER_IP

When you finish administering the VPS, type exit or press Ctrl-D to close the remote shell. Closing the Terminal window also ends the session, but explicitly exiting makes the state clear when several sessions are open.

Which connection method fits your Chromebook?

Use the Linux Terminal if your Chromebook supports it and you want the full OpenSSH command line, explicit -i and -p options, and key files managed in a conventional Linux home directory. Use the Secure Shell extension if a browser workflow is preferable or Linux is unavailable, provided your administrator allows the extension. In either case, the security-critical decisions are the same: identify the correct VPS address and account, verify the host fingerprint, and protect the authentication credential.
