You can send a Wowza stream to a YouTube Live event by configuring an RTMP target with that event’s Stream URL and Stream key, then enabling the target and checking YouTube’s incoming preview. The exact steps depend on whether you use Wowza Streaming Engine, Wowza Video, or the older Wowza Streaming Cloud interface; their screens and field mappings are not interchangeable.
Before you configure the connection
First confirm which Wowza product and interface your account uses. Wowza’s current setup guidance covers Streaming Engine and Wowza Video, while its older Streaming Cloud user guide documents custom RTMP delivery but does not establish that the same interface is still available today. If your screen differs from the steps below, use the field help in your current Wowza interface rather than combining instructions from another product.
- A YouTube live event or stream with its event-specific Stream URL and Stream key.
- A source stream arriving at Wowza and a Wowza output/target you can enable.
- Access to YouTube Live Control Room so you can verify the incoming preview before going live.
Keep the Stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the event. Do not show it in screenshots or include it in public text.
Get the YouTube RTMP details
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its Stream URL and Stream key. Use the details for the event you intend to broadcast; do not substitute another event’s key.
- Keep the event open in Live Control Room. You will return to check for an incoming preview after Wowza starts sending video.
Configure the Wowza target for the product you use
Wowza Streaming Engine
Wowza Streaming Engine has a YouTube Live stream target workflow. Create a target for YouTube Live, supply the incoming source stream name and the YouTube destination details, then enable stream targets and the individual target. Wowza’s example maps the destination host to the host portion of the URL and the destination application to the path after the host; leave the destination application instance blank. The documented default RTMP port is 1935.

Use the Streaming Engine field labels and its YouTube target instructions for your version. Do not paste a whole URL into a field intended only for the host or application path.
Wowza Video
In Wowza Video, choose an output rendition, add an external service or custom target, select RTMP, and enter YouTube’s primary URL and the event’s Stream key. In the documented Wowza Video flow, the target username and password are left blank. A legacy guide says to omit the rtmp:// prefix and trailing slash in URL fields and describes an optional backup URL; follow the actual field help in your current interface if it differs.

For this documented workflow, the YouTube Stream key is used as the target stream name/key. Do not borrow Streaming Engine’s host/application mapping for Wowza Video.
Wowza Streaming Cloud
An archival Wowza Streaming Cloud user guide describes sending to YouTube through a custom RTMP target. The current Cloud-specific screen and click path are not established here, so use the custom-target fields and instructions displayed in the Cloud account you actually have. Enter YouTube’s event-specific URL and key in the corresponding fields, and do not assume the Wowza Video or Streaming Engine steps apply unchanged.

Choose an output and check encoder settings
The documented model is that Wowza sends a selected output rendition to YouTube, and YouTube creates lower-bitrate playback variants for viewers. It is not necessary to assume that Wowza must send multiple renditions. Whether passthrough transcoding is available can depend on the Wowza subscription, so check the features of your plan rather than assuming all plans include it.
Wowza’s 2025 Wowza Video guidance lists support up to 2160p (3840 × 2160) at 60 fps and says an I-frame should occur at least every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. Those are Wowza-published figures, and the same guidance cautions that YouTube may change encoder requirements. Check the current YouTube encoder settings shown for your event before choosing resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval.

Start the output and verify YouTube receives it
- Start the source so it reaches Wowza.
- Enable the Wowza stream target or output, as applicable to your product, and confirm that the individual YouTube target is enabled.
- Return to YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Confirm that the picture and audio are correct.
- When YouTube shows the incoming stream and the event is ready, start the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room if the event flow requires you to do so.
Troubleshoot common connection problems

Before broadcasting, confirm you have rights to all video and audio in the source. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and encoder requirements can change; check the current instructions and notices in YouTube Studio for the account and event you are using. The Wowza setup guidance does not establish a universal eligibility rule for every YouTube account.
