How to control who can message you on Instagram

Instagram’s message controls let you decide whether messages from each sender category reach your Chats, appear as Message Requests, or are not delivered. Open your profile menu, enter the current settings area, find the messaging or message-controls section, and choose the least-permissive option available for the people you do not want contacting you. Group-chat invitations use a separate control, so change that setting too if unsolicited group additions are the problem.

Instagram changes menu names and available choices by app version, country, age, and account status. The labels below describe what to look for rather than promising one universal tap sequence.

What Instagram’s message controls actually change

Instagram does not use one universal on/off switch for every direct message. Instead, it presents sender categories and lets you select where messages from each category go. Depending on the category and your account, the choices generally correspond to three outcomes:

Delivery choice Result Best use
Chats Messages are delivered into your regular chat inbox. People you already know or want to reach you directly.
Message Requests Messages are separated into a request area for you to review rather than entering your main chats. People you may want to screen before responding.
No delivery Instagram does not deliver messages from that sender category to your chats or request area. When you want to prevent that category from starting new conversations, if the option is offered.

Meta described the feature this way in its September 30, 2020 announcement about Instagram messaging: “You can also control where you receive messages and calls, such as in your chats, in your message requests or not at all.” The exact sender groups and wording shown in your app can differ.

These controls govern new contact attempts. They do not necessarily remove an existing conversation, stop an account you already follow from messaging, or prevent every form of interaction. Read each category’s description before saving a change.

Think of the three destinations as different levels of exposure. Chats are the most open because a message arrives with ordinary conversations. Message Requests create a screening step: you can read the request and decide whether to accept, delete, or take another action. No delivery is the strongest general setting when Instagram offers it for that sender category, but it is not a promise that every other route of contact disappears.

The categories matter as much as the destination. Your account may list people you do not follow, your followers, accounts you follow, or people with whom you are already connected. A strict setting applied only to non-followers will not automatically rewrite the rule for a current follower or an established contact. Open the description for every relevant category and consider whether the people you want to keep in touch with are included.

How do I stop people from messaging me on Instagram?

  1. Open your profile. In the Instagram app, go to your profile page and open the menu in the upper corner.
  2. Enter the current settings area. Look for Settings and activity, or an equivalent label such as Settings. Instagram periodically rearranges this page.
  3. Find messaging controls. Search the settings list for Messages and story replies, Message controls, Message requests, or a similarly named privacy section. If your app has a settings search field, search for “messages” or “requests.”
  4. Review every sender category. Instagram may separate people you do not follow, followers, accounts you follow, and other groups. Open each category that matters to you instead of changing only the first one you see.
  5. Select the least-permissive delivery choice. Choose No delivery, Don’t receive requests, or the closest wording offered for the unwanted category. If no-delivery is not available, choose Message Requests so the attempt is kept out of your main chats.
  6. Confirm the change. Some versions save immediately; others show a confirmation control. Return to the category and verify that the new choice is still selected.

There is no reliable universal path that can be guaranteed across all Instagram editions. If you cannot find the labels above, start from your profile settings and look for the current area that mentions messaging, story replies, privacy, or requests.

Make the change deliberately rather than tapping the first privacy option you see. Story replies, mentions, comments, and direct messages can appear in neighboring sections but are not necessarily governed by the same switch. If your goal is to reduce contact generally, review those separate interaction settings as well, while recognizing that the message controls described here concern direct-message delivery.

Can I stop non-followers from DMing me?

Usually, yes, if your account offers a sender category for people you do not follow. Open that category and select the strictest delivery option available. Choosing Message Requests keeps non-followers out of your main Chats but still leaves a request for you to review. Choosing a no-delivery option prevents the message from being delivered when Instagram provides that option.

Check the other categories as well. A setting for “people you don’t follow” may not cover current followers, accounts you follow, people already connected to you, or an existing conversation. Instagram’s own category labels tell you the scope of each switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a former follower still appears in an existing thread, changing the non-follower request rule may not close that thread. If that person is the problem, use the account-level tools described below. If you want friends to continue reaching you while strangers cannot, leave the category covering those friends at Chats and make the non-follower category more restrictive.

How do I turn off message requests?

Go to the messaging or message-controls area in your profile settings, open each category that can send requests, and choose the no-delivery option if it is listed. If your account only offers a choice between Chats and Message Requests, selecting Message Requests is the most restrictive available setting, but it does not eliminate requests altogether. It simply keeps them outside your main inbox.

“Turn off requests” can therefore mean two different things: preventing a category from delivering anything, or preventing requests from interrupting your Chats. Read the option text carefully so you know which result you selected. After changing the setting, test it with a permitted account only if you can do so safely. Do not ask someone to send unwanted content merely to test a privacy control. A safer check is to reopen the setting and confirm the selected destination.

How to stop people adding you to Instagram group chats

Group-chat invitations are separate from one-to-one message requests. Someone can be unable to start a normal DM with you and still be able to add you to a group if the group-chat setting allows it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From your profile, open the menu and enter the current settings area.
  2. Use the settings search field, if available, or look in the messaging, privacy, or message-controls section for a group-chat, group-message, or group-invitation setting.
  3. Review which accounts are allowed to add you to groups. The categories and choices can vary by account.
  4. Choose the most restrictive option that still works for the groups you want to join.
  5. Save or confirm, then revisit the setting to make sure it remains active.

If a group invitation has already arrived, leave the group and use the report, restrict, or block options on the relevant account when appropriate. Changing the group setting prevents or limits future invitations; it does not erase a group in which you are already a member.

This distinction answers a common question: “How do I stop people adding me to Instagram group chats?” Do not assume that changing one-to-one requests answered it. Review both controls, especially if spam arrives through group invitations rather than individual threads. A group rule can also affect legitimate communities, so choose the narrowest category that solves the problem and explain the change to family, classmates, or colleagues who normally add you.

Choose the right response for one unwanted account

General message controls are best when you want a broad rule. If one account is the problem, Instagram provides account-level tools with different effects.

Tool What it is for What to expect
Restrict Reducing interaction without the visibility of a block. Meta’s safety guidance says Restrict can hide your online and read status from the restricted person and place limits on how their interactions appear to you. It is not a guarantee that all contact stops.
Block A stronger account-level boundary. Blocking is intended to stop the blocked account from interacting with you through Instagram. Use it when you do not want continued contact from that account.
Report Flagging harassment, threats, spam, or another policy concern. Reporting sends the account or content to Instagram for review. It is not a replacement for changing your message or group settings.
Hidden Words Filtering requests that contain selected abusive words, phrases, or emojis. Matching requests can be routed to Hidden Requests. This filters content; it does not necessarily prevent an account from attempting contact.

To use one of these tools, open the person’s profile or the relevant conversation and look for the account options menu. The available labels may differ. Restrict is useful when you want less visibility and interaction without taking the most conspicuous step. Block is better when you want a firm boundary with a particular account. Report addresses behavior that may violate Instagram’s rules, such as harassment, threats, or spam; it does not itself configure future delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hidden Words works at the content level. Add words, phrases, or emojis that commonly appear in abusive requests, then check Hidden Requests because a legitimate message can contain a matching term. Filtering is not the same as blocking: the sender may still attempt contact, and other messages may not contain the terms you selected.

For threats, blackmail, stalking, or immediate danger, preserve evidence, use Instagram’s reporting flow, and contact local emergency or support services when appropriate. Do not engage simply to obtain more messages, and do not assume a privacy switch is an emergency-response system.

Teen and supervised-account differences

Teen accounts can have stricter defaults than adult accounts. Meta’s January 2024 announcement, updated on August 9 and November 25, 2024, says teens under 16—and teens under 18 in certain countries—can by default be messaged or added to group chats only by people they already follow or are connected to.

The age threshold is not identical worldwide. Country rules, the age attached to the account, and whether supervision is enabled can change what Instagram displays. A teen should follow the labels and notices in their own app rather than assume that an adult account’s menu will match.

When parental approval may be required

Meta says supervised teens under 16 need parental approval for some requests to change safety and privacy defaults to a less restrictive setting. That means an option to allow broader messaging may be unavailable, require a parent or guardian to approve it, or appear with an additional explanation. The exact eligibility and approval flow can vary by country and account state.

Meta’s announcement also says that message requests from people who are not already connected to a teen are text-only until the teen accepts the request. Before acceptance, the sender cannot send images, videos, or voice notes in that request. This safeguard is specific to the teen settings described by Meta and should not be assumed for every Instagram account.

Parents and teens should distinguish a supervised approval prompt from an app error. A less-restrictive choice may be intentionally gated, not missing. Discuss which friends, relatives, or communities need access before changing a default, and remember that country-specific age rules can make two otherwise similar accounts show different choices.

Why a person may still be able to contact you

  • You changed only one category. A rule for non-followers may not cover existing followers, accounts you follow, or people already connected to you. Review the categories your app lists.
  • The contact is a group invitation. Group-chat additions have their own control. Adjust that setting separately.
  • An existing chat remains open. Changing request delivery may not delete an established conversation. Use Restrict or Block on the specific account if you need a stronger boundary.
  • Your app shows different labels. Instagram tests and updates settings, and geography, age, and account status can affect the menu. Use the current messaging or privacy labels in your own version.
  • The account is supervised or a teen account. Stricter defaults or approval requirements can remove choices that appear on an adult, unsupervised account.
  • Hidden Words caught the content but did not stop contact. Look in Hidden Requests and decide whether to report, restrict, or block the sender.
  • You changed a destination, not a relationship. Sending future requests to Message Requests does not unfollow someone, remove them from a group, or delete the history of an existing chat.
  • The setting saved under a different account. If you manage multiple Instagram accounts, confirm that you changed the profile receiving the unwanted messages. Each account can have its own controls.

A practical decision guide

Use the following sequence to match the control to the problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. You want broad prevention: review every relevant sender category in message controls and select no delivery where available.
  2. You only want messages out of sight: choose Message Requests instead of Chats, then review requests manually.
  3. You want to prevent group additions: change the separate group-chat invitation setting.
  4. One account is repeatedly contacting you: open that account’s options and choose Restrict or Block; report policy-breaking behavior.
  5. The problem is abusive wording: configure Hidden Words and check Hidden Requests, while remembering that filtering is not the same as blocking.
  6. You are managing a teen or supervised account: expect stricter defaults and possible parental approval for less-restrictive changes.

Compare the trade-offs before choosing. Chats are convenient but expose you to immediate interruptions. Message Requests preserve a review step but still require occasional monitoring. No delivery is strongest for the category in question, but it can also hide a legitimate first contact. A group-invitation restriction may stop spam while also preventing a trusted organizer from adding you automatically. Account-level actions are precise, whereas a general setting affects everyone in the selected category.

What to check after changing the settings

  • Reopen each changed category and confirm the selected destination.
  • Check both one-to-one messaging controls and group-chat controls.
  • Review existing chats separately; a new default may not alter an old conversation.
  • Look at Message Requests and Hidden Requests for legitimate contacts that were filtered.
  • Update the Instagram app if a setting is missing, then search the current settings labels again. An update can move controls without changing their purpose.
  • For a specific harasser, combine the general setting with an account-level action rather than relying on one control to solve every type of contact.
  • Check after major app updates or when you change age, supervision, or account privacy details, because the categories and available choices can change.
  • Tell trusted contacts how to reach you if you select no delivery for a broad category; otherwise an important first message may never arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop everyone from messaging me?

Instagram may not provide one switch that covers every sender category. Open each category shown in your message controls and choose no delivery where available. Existing conversations, followers, and group invitations may require separate actions.

What is the difference between Message Requests and no delivery?

Message Requests places a new message in a separate area for review. No delivery means Instagram does not deliver messages from that category to Chats or the request area, when that choice is offered.

Will blocking someone delete our old conversation?

Do not rely on blocking to erase chat history. Blocking is an account-level boundary; review the conversation and use the available deletion or exit options separately if you need to remove it from your view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can someone I follow still DM me after I restrict non-followers?

Possibly. A non-follower rule applies only to the category described. Review the category covering accounts you follow and use Restrict or Block for a particular person.

Do Hidden Words stop a person from sending requests?

No. Hidden Words can route requests containing selected words, phrases, or emojis to Hidden Requests. It filters matching content but does not necessarily stop the account from trying to contact you.

Why do teen accounts have fewer choices?

Meta’s teen settings use stricter defaults. Under-16 teens, or under-18 teens in certain countries, can by default be contacted or added to groups only by people they already follow or are connected to. Supervised teens under 16 may need parental approval for some less-restrictive changes.

Can an unknown person send photos to a teen before acceptance?

Under the teen safeguard described by Meta, a request from someone not already connected is text-only until accepted. Images, videos, and voice notes cannot be sent in that request before acceptance. This rule should not be generalized to every account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the menu on my phone does not match these instructions?

Start at your profile menu and search the current settings for messages, requests, privacy, or group invitations. Instagram changes labels and layouts by app version, geography, age, and account state, so the wording displayed in your account is the authoritative guide.

What Meta’s guidance establishes

Meta’s My Digital World safety guidance describes message delivery, group controls, Hidden Words, Restrict, and related tools, but it does not promise that one setting blocks every unwanted interaction. Its September 2020 messaging announcement explains the Chats, Message Requests, and no-delivery model. The teen-settings announcement from 2024 explains the stricter defaults, country-dependent age thresholds, supervised-account approval, and text-only requests before acceptance.

Because Instagram’s Help Center navigation and in-app labels can change, treat the wording displayed in your account as authoritative. The important distinction remains stable: message-request delivery controls where one-to-one attempts go, while group-chat controls govern invitations to groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop people from messaging me on Instagram?

Open your profile menu, find the current messaging or message-controls area, review each sender category, and choose No delivery or the closest least-permissive option. If no delivery is unavailable, use Message Requests to keep attempts out of your main Chats. Review group-chat invitations separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I turn off message requests?

For every category that can send requests, choose the no-delivery option if your app offers it. If the only choices are Chats and Message Requests, Message Requests is the strictest available destination but does not eliminate requests.

Can I stop non-followers from DMing me?

Usually, yes. Open the category for people you do not follow and select no delivery, or Message Requests if that is the strictest choice. Check other categories because this rule may not cover followers, accounts you follow, or existing chats.

How do I stop people adding me to Instagram group chats?

Change the separate group-chat or group-invitation setting in the current messaging or privacy controls. One-to-one message settings do not necessarily prevent group additions.

Should I use Restrict or Block?

Use Restrict to reduce interaction and hide online or read status without the visibility of a block. Use Block for a stronger boundary with a specific account. Report threats, harassment, spam, or other policy concerns as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do teen accounts have different message controls?

Yes. Meta says under-16 teens, and under-18 teens in certain countries, are generally limited to messages and group additions from people they already follow or are connected to. Supervised teens under 16 may need parental approval for some less-restrictive changes.

The Bottom Line

Open your profile’s current messaging controls, review every sender category, and choose Chats, Message Requests, or no delivery according to the boundary you want. Change group-chat invitations separately, and use Restrict, Block, Report, or Hidden Words when the problem involves one account or particular content. Teen and supervised accounts can have stricter, country-dependent choices, so follow the labels and approval notices shown in your own app.
