You usually cannot convert a .7z file directly to .wbfs. A 7Z file is a compressed archive, so the correct workflow is 7Z → extract the game image → convert the image to WBFS if necessary.
Extract the archive with 7-Zip, inspect what it contains, and then choose the appropriate path. It may already contain a WBFS file, a Wii ISO that needs conversion, or a Dolphin format such as RVZ that should usually remain unchanged for emulation.

What 7Z, ISO, and WBFS mean
- 7Z: A general-purpose compressed archive. It can contain an ISO, WBFS, RVZ, WIA, CISO, or several files.
- ISO: A disc-image file representing a Wii game disc. A full Wii ISO is commonly around 4.7 GB, although the exact size varies.
- WBFS: A Wii game-backup format commonly used by Wii USB loaders. It removes unused disc data, so it is smaller than a full ISO. Dolphin supports WBFS, but describes it as a lossy space-saving format rather than a complete archival image. Dolphin’s FAQ explains the format trade-offs.
Extracting an archive only decompresses its contents. It does not change an ISO, RVZ, or any other file into WBFS. Renaming game.7z to game.wbfs also does not convert it; file extensions do not change the data inside a file.
First check what is inside the 7Z
After extraction, identify the actual game image:
| Extracted file | What to do |
|---|---|
.wbfs |
It is already converted. Organize it for your loader. |
.iso |
Convert the Wii ISO to WBFS if your USB loader requires or prefers it. |
.rvz |
Keep it for Dolphin unless you specifically need a Wii USB-loader file. |
.wia or .ciso |
Use a tool that supports the format, or convert it to a standard ISO first. |
.part1.7z, .7z.001, or similar |
Put every part in the same folder, then start extraction from the first part. |
A folder containing cover art, metadata, or text files is not necessarily the game image. Look for the actual disc-image extension and confirm that extraction completed without errors.

What you need
- 7-Zip for extracting the archive.
- A Wii ISO-to-WBFS utility, such as the legacy Windows-oriented Wii Backup Manager, when the target is a Wii or vWii USB loader.
- Enough temporary storage for the original archive, extracted image, output WBFS, and any temporary conversion files.
- A game dump you created from a disc you own or are otherwise authorized to back up.
Wii Backup Manager’s download page identifies Build 78 as its stable legacy release. It is an older Windows utility, so treat third-party mirrors cautiously, verify downloads where possible, and do not assume that every similarly named download is maintained or official.
Step 1: Extract the 7Z archive
- Install 7-Zip from its official website.
- In Windows Explorer, right-click the
.7zfile. - Choose 7-Zip → Extract to “folder name” for a new folder, or choose Extract Here.
- Wait for extraction to finish, then inspect the extracted files.
You can also use the command line:
7z x "C:Pathgame.7z" -o"C:Pathextracted"
Keep the original archive until the extracted image has been converted and tested. A compressed archive can expand substantially, and conversion may require the extracted ISO and the final WBFS to exist at the same time.
If extraction fails
- “Can’t open as archive”: The file may be incomplete, damaged, mislabeled, or missing multipart volumes.
- CRC or data error: The archive is probably corrupt. Re-create or re-download it from a legitimate source.
- Password prompt: You need the password supplied by the archive’s legitimate creator.
- Not enough space: Free space on both the extraction and conversion destinations.
- Antivirus warning: A game image is not the same thing as an executable. Do not disable security protections indiscriminately; inspect or scan the archive and tool instead.
Step 2: Choose the correct conversion path
If the archive contains a WBFS file
No conversion is needed. For a Wii USB-loader setup, the usual layout is:
X:wbfsGame Title [GAMEID]GAMEID.wbfs
For example, if the dump itself identifies as RMCE01, a conventional layout would be:
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
X:wbfsMario Kart Wii [RMCE01]RMCE01.wbfs
Use the title and game ID recognized by your management tool or dump; do not guess an ID. The exact folder convention can vary, but the wbfs directory and consistent ID-based naming are widely used. Dolphin’s Wii file-layout guide documents the conventional structure and split-file naming.
If the archive contains a Wii ISO
This is the standard ISO-to-WBFS route:
- Extract the ISO completely from the 7Z archive.
- Open Wii Backup Manager or another trusted Wii backup utility.
- Use its file-list or add-file function to select the extracted ISO.
- Select the game after the tool recognizes its title and ID.
- Choose the transfer, export, or conversion operation that outputs a WBFS file or transfers to a configured Wii game drive.
- Choose a destination with sufficient free space and start the operation.
- When it finishes, confirm that the output has a
.wbfsextension and that the title and ID are recognized. - Place or transfer the result into the loader’s expected
wbfsdirectory.
Menu names differ between Wii Backup Manager builds, forks, and alternative utilities. The important operation is always the same: add the ISO, select WBFS as the output or transfer format, and choose the destination.
If the archive contains RVZ
RVZ is primarily a Dolphin format. If you are playing on a PC with Dolphin, you normally do not need to convert it to WBFS. Dolphin recommends RVZ for new users because it provides efficient compression while retaining a better fit for emulator use than older lossy formats. Its documentation lists RVZ, ISO, WBFS, WIA, and CISO among supported Wii-related formats. See Dolphin’s current format guidance.
If you need the game for a physical Wii or vWii USB loader, use this intermediate route:

- Extract the RVZ.
- Use Dolphin’s conversion tools to create a standard ISO.
- Convert that ISO to WBFS with a Wii backup utility.
- Transfer the WBFS file to the loader-compatible folder.
This may require several times the final storage size temporarily because the RVZ, extracted ISO, and output WBFS can coexist during the process.
If the archive contains WIA or CISO
Do not assume that every version of every Wii backup manager can convert these formats directly. First check whether your chosen utility recognizes the file. If it does not, use Dolphin or a format-specific tool to produce a standard ISO, then perform the ISO-to-WBFS conversion. Preserve the original until the converted result has been verified.
Step 3: Put the WBFS file on the correct drive
For many Wii USB-loader setups, use a FAT32 or NTFS drive with a structure like this:
X:wbfsGame Title [GAMEID]GAMEID.wbfs
A WBFS file is not the same thing as a WBFS partition. You can store .wbfs files on FAT32 or NTFS; the drive does not automatically need to be formatted as a historical WBFS partition. Formatting a drive erases its contents, so back up anything important before using a tool’s drive-formatting function.

FAT32 and split WBFS files
FAT32 cannot store a single file larger than 4 GiB. When a game exceeds the relevant limit, a management tool should split it automatically into a main file and continuation files such as:
GAMEID.wbfs
GAMEID.wbf1
Dolphin documents splitting for sources exceeding 4,194,272 KiB. Keep every part in the same game folder, and never manually concatenate the files. Your USB loader must support split WBFS files. NTFS can avoid FAT32’s single-file limit, but compatibility depends on the Wii software and loader configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 4: Verify the conversion
- Confirm the output extension is
.wbfs. - Confirm the file is nonzero and its size is plausible for the title.
- Check that the management tool identifies the game title and ID.
- Make sure all split files remain together in the same folder.
- Run the utility’s verify, hash, or integrity feature if it provides one.
- Test it in the intended environment: a compatible Wii loader such as USB Loader GX or WiiFlow, or Dolphin for emulation.
A smaller WBFS than the original ISO is expected because unused disc data has been removed. That does not automatically indicate damaged playable content, but WBFS does not preserve every byte of the original disc image and is therefore less suitable as an archival master.

The converter does not list the extracted file
Check that the file is really outside the 7Z archive, that extraction completed, and that it is a Wii ISO rather than RVZ, WIA, CISO, or a GameCube image. If necessary, open it in Dolphin to identify the disc type. Convert unsupported formats to a standard ISO first. Never fix the problem by merely changing the extension.

The game does not appear in the loader
Check the location, folder name, file name, game ID, drive format, partition configuration, and split-file set. Also confirm that the USB loader supports the format and that the dump is complete rather than truncated.
The game works in Dolphin but not on Wii hardware
This does not necessarily mean the conversion failed. Dolphin may support formats or metadata that a particular Wii or vWii loader does not. Check the loader’s supported formats, cIOS and drive requirements, USB port, partition setup, and naming rules separately.
The conversion needs more space than expected
Plan for the archive, the fully extracted image, the WBFS output, and temporary files. Use a drive with ample free space, then delete the archive or intermediate ISO only after validating the final file and retaining any backup you need.

| Goal | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Use a Wii or vWii USB loader | WBFS is commonly appropriate, subject to loader compatibility. |
| Play on Dolphin | Keep RVZ when available; Dolphin also supports ISO and WBFS. |
| Keep a broadly compatible archive | Retain the verified original dump or ISO rather than relying only on WBFS. |
| Save space for emulation | RVZ is generally Dolphin’s recommended choice for new users. |
Dolphin can read WBFS directly, so conversion is not required merely to play a supported game on a computer. WBFS makes sense primarily when the destination is a Wii USB-loader workflow or when its reduced size is more important than preserving a complete disc image.
Legal and safety note
Use these steps only with games you legally own or are otherwise authorized to back up. Dolphin’s FAQ recommends dumping games from discs you own and discourages downloading commercial game dumps. Download 7-Zip and conversion tools from trustworthy project sources, verify files when possible, and do not disable antivirus protection casually.
