How to Convert a 16:9 Video to 9:16 for YouTube Shorts

Make a vertical 9:16 version of a 16:9 video by setting a portrait sequence, reframing each shot, checking graphics and motion, then exporting for Shorts.

To convert a 16:9 landscape video for YouTube Shorts, create a 9:16 vertical sequence, then crop and reposition the footage so the important subject stays in frame. Use manual reframing for a mostly static shot or automatic reframing as a first pass for movement; inspect the full edit before exporting. A common vertical export is 1080 × 1920 pixels, which is a 9:16 ratio—not a resolution YouTube requires.

What changes when you reframe 16:9 footage to 9:16?

A landscape frame is much wider than a vertical one. Filling a 9:16 canvas with 16:9 footage therefore means cropping away much of the original width and choosing which part of the image to keep. Changing the canvas alone does not preserve the entire landscape image in a full-frame portrait crop.

For a centered person or object, scaling and repositioning may be enough. If the subject moves, the framing may need to move with it. If important people, gameplay action, or graphics sit at opposite edges of the landscape frame, a single vertical crop may not show everything; consider redesigning the layout rather than expecting the whole original composition to fit.

Choose a reframing method

Method Works best when Trade-off
Manual crop and reposition The subject is static or you want deliberate control over each shot. You must check framing throughout the timeline and adjust it when the subject or camera moves.
Automatic reframing or subject tracking The subject moves and you want the editor to make a first-pass vertical crop. Tracking can lose the subject, particularly during fast action or complex shots, so review and correct the result.

For game footage, check where the action occurs in each shot: a tracker may follow a character while missing a HUD element, another player, or an important part of the scene. Keep essential titles and captions inside the vertical frame as well.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Convert the video step by step

  1. Keep the landscape edit. Duplicate the project or sequence, or create a new vertical sequence. This preserves the original framing if you need to revise or export the 16:9 version later.
  2. Set the sequence to 9:16. For a 1080-pixel-wide example, use 1080 × 1920 pixels. Other dimensions work if their width-to-height ratio is 9:16. The 1080 × 1920 size is an example calculated from the ratio, not a YouTube-mandated resolution.
  3. Reframe each shot. For manual framing, scale the image to fill the vertical canvas and move it until the subject is visible. For moving footage, use automatic reframing or subject tracking as a starting point, then refine the crop where it drifts or misses something important.
  4. Review motion and cuts. Check the full sequence, not just its opening frame. Look for subjects leaving the crop, abrupt shifts in framing, and cuts where the next shot places the subject somewhere different. Add or adjust keyframes where the framing needs to follow the action.
  5. Check graphics and edges. Review faces, hands, products, gameplay action, captions, and titles near the edges. If a landscape composition cannot be cropped cleanly, redesign it for vertical viewing—for example, with a deliberate background or a split layout.
  6. Export and upload. Export a square or vertical file, then upload it through YouTube Studio. Check the finished upload on a phone to confirm that the crop and text remain easy to see.

Use Auto Reframe in Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe’s documented Premiere workflow is to select the sequence in the Project panel, then choose Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence. Choose a target aspect ratio or enter a custom ratio for the vertical sequence. Adobe’s documentation, last updated April 14, 2026, describes three motion settings:

  • Slower Motion: for footage with little camera movement.
  • Default: for typical action.
  • Faster Motion: for rapid movement.

Treat the automated result as a first pass, not a finished edit. Adobe notes that fast action and complex sequences may need fine-tuning. Review the whole sequence and correct tracking or framing wherever the subject is lost.

Export without forcing the wrong player shape

YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio. YouTube advises: “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” If you want a designed background or split layout, build it as part of the composition; do not add bars simply to force a landscape video into a particular player size. See YouTube’s guidance on video resolution and aspect ratios.

Upload and check YouTube Shorts eligibility

YouTube’s desktop Shorts upload guidance, accessed in 2026, says Shorts can be up to three minutes long and have a square or vertical aspect ratio; it does not say that only exact 9:16 uploads qualify. Its guidance also says externally created Shorts must use copyright-protected material approved for use. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s Shorts upload guidance before publishing, especially if your edit includes music, game footage, or other material you did not create.

Common problems and fixes

  • The subject is cut off: Reposition the crop or adjust keyframes around the shot. If the important subject moves across the landscape frame, inspect more than one point in the clip.
  • Automatic reframing follows the wrong thing: Correct the crop manually. With multiple people, objects, or competing points of interest, decide which must remain visible and check the framing at each change in action.
  • The crop changes abruptly: Review transitions and camera movement in context, then smooth or adjust the reframing keyframes. A crop that looks fine on a still frame can feel distracting in motion.
  • Captions, HUD elements, or titles disappear: Move or redesign the graphics for the vertical composition. Do not assume graphics placed safely in a landscape edit will remain visible after cropping.
  • The whole landscape image will not fit: That is a consequence of the different frame proportions. Choose the most important area, or make a designed vertical layout that presents more of the original image without padding the video just to manipulate the player.
  • The upload is not treated as a Short: Check the current YouTube upload guidance for duration and aspect ratio, then verify that the exported file is square or vertical. YouTube’s desktop guidance allows up to three minutes; eligibility is not limited to exact 9:16 files.
  • You are unsure whether the music or footage is cleared: Use material you own or have permission to use, and check YouTube’s current copyright guidance before uploading.
