You cannot export a finished WordPress theme directly from Figma. Figma is the visual specification; WordPress still needs templates, content queries, editor controls, routing, security, and integration with the site’s data. A dependable conversion therefore has six stages: document the handoff, choose a block or classic architecture, translate the design system into theme settings and reusable components, implement responsive templates and content logic, load optimized assets through WordPress APIs, and validate everything on a development or staging site.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The workflow below applies to a game site, portfolio, store, or editorial project. The examples use game-style pages such as a title detail screen and news cards, but the implementation decisions are the same for any content model.

What “Figma to WordPress” actually means
A Figma file describes appearance and interaction states: frames, spacing, typography, colors, components, variants, and responsive intentions. A WordPress theme must turn those decisions into a functioning publishing system. It must know which content comes from posts, pages, custom fields, menus, widgets, queries, or blocks; how URLs resolve; what happens when content is missing; and how editors change a page without editing PHP.
Figma’s generated CSS or code snippets can help you inspect values, but they are not a complete theme. They do not supply WordPress templates, the template hierarchy, block-editor behavior, database queries, accessibility semantics, security controls, or plugin compatibility. Treat the design as a contract to implement, not as an export file.

1. Prepare a development-ready Figma handoff
Do the handoff before creating theme files. Figma’s inspection tools and Dev Mode let developers inspect properties, compare versions, download assets, and review generated values. Access to Dev Mode depends on the file, plan, seat, and permissions, so confirm that every implementer can inspect the required pages.
Inventory the screens and states
Create a list of every page type, not just every frame. A game site might need a home page, game detail page, category archive, article, search results, author page, 404 page, and campaign landing page. Record shared regions such as the header, primary navigation, footer, cookie notice, newsletter form, and social links. For each component, note its states: default, hover, focus, active, disabled, loading, error, empty, logged-in, and logged-out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord measurements and design tokens
- Container and column widths, gutters, section spacing, and the breakpoint at which each layout changes.
- Font family, weight, size, line height, letter spacing, and the type scale for headings, labels, metadata, and body text.
- Color values for backgrounds, text, borders, links, focus indicators, success, warning, and error states.
- Border radii, shadows, icon dimensions, image aspect ratios, and button heights.
- Exact text strings, maximum title lengths, truncation rules, and content variations.
- Keyboard behavior, visible focus treatment, contrast expectations, alternative-text requirements, and motion preferences.
Make the file usable for implementation
Use descriptive page and layer names, meaningful component and style names, and a clear “Ready for development” status. Add annotations where a visual choice represents a rule rather than a one-off value—for example, “cards become one column below the mobile breakpoint” or “the score badge is hidden when no rating exists.” Set export options on the frames or components developers will actually need. Figma supports PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF exports; choose the format that matches the asset’s role instead of exporting every layer.
Resolve questions before coding
Ask who owns copy, which fields are editable, whether a card is a reusable pattern or a unique composition, and which content source powers each list. Confirm the behavior of long titles, missing artwork, empty search results, pagination, menus, forms, and error messages. These decisions prevent a visually accurate page from becoming uneditable or fragile in WordPress.
2. Choose a WordPress theme architecture
Choose the architecture from the project’s editing needs and existing code, not from the number of Figma frames. A block theme uses HTML files containing WordPress block markup. Templates and template parts define document structure, and WordPress parses the blocks into front-end HTML. A classic theme uses PHP template files containing HTML, template tags, and PHP; WordPress selects the most specific matching file through its template hierarchy and falls back to the index template.

| Decision factor | Block theme | Classic theme |
|---|---|---|
| Primary templates | HTML files with block markup | PHP template files with template tags |
| Editor experience | Site and post editing through blocks, styles, patterns, and template parts | Often more constrained unless custom editor features are added |
| Best fit | Projects where editors need to adjust layouts and reusable compositions | Existing PHP themes, specialized server-side logic, or a stable locked layout |
| Reusable regions | Template parts, patterns, and custom blocks | Template parts, PHP functions, and custom fields |
| Global design controls | theme.json settings and global styles |
CSS, customizer or editor settings, and PHP-driven configuration |
| Main maintenance risk | Uncontrolled editor changes can drift from the design system | Hard-coded layouts can make ordinary content edits require code |
WordPress’s own documentation summarizes the distinction this way: “In block themes, blocks are used instead of template tags.” In modern block themes, templates are HTML files with block markup. Select a block theme when the design maps naturally to blocks and editors need layout control. Select a classic theme when you must extend an established PHP codebase, depend on server-side logic that is awkward in blocks, or intentionally keep the layout tightly controlled. A hybrid approach can work, but define which system owns each template so two competing sources of truth do not emerge.

Build the foundation first. If you reproduce individual frames one by one, the same spacing, color, and card rules will diverge across pages. Convert repeated decisions into WordPress settings and reusable structures, then use those structures in page templates.
Block-theme foundation
A practical block-theme directory commonly contains:
style.cssfor the theme header metadata and any theme-level CSS.theme.jsonfor supported settings, color and typography presets, spacing controls, and global styles.templates/for page structures such as the front page, single post, archive, search, and 404 views.parts/for shared regions such as the header, navigation, and footer.patterns/for repeatable compositions such as a feature hero, game card grid, or newsletter callout.assets/for optimized images, CSS, JavaScript, and source maps when your build process produces them.
Map Figma color and type tokens to presets and global styles whenever possible. A single preset for the accent color is safer than copying a hexadecimal value into twelve patterns. Expose only the controls editors should change; unrestricted spacing and color options make visual drift likely. Use template parts for regions that repeat across templates, patterns for compositions editors may insert, and a custom block when a component needs its own data query or interaction.
Classic-theme foundation
Map each page type to the most specific template that should render it. Keep shared markup in template parts and shared behavior in small, named PHP functions. A typical mapping might use a front-page template for the home screen, a single template for articles, an archive template for taxonomy listings, a search template for results, and a 404 template for missing routes. Use the hierarchy deliberately: if a specialized template is not needed, let WordPress fall back rather than duplicating nearly identical files.

In either architecture, keep editor-controlled text, images, links, and lists in WordPress content fields or blocks. Hard-code only genuine theme UI, such as a navigation label that is part of the component itself. A game title, score, release date, or article headline belongs in content data so an editor can change it without editing a template.
4. Implement one representative page first
Choose a page that exercises the shared system—usually the home page or a detail page with a header, navigation, cards, rich text, and a responsive layout. Build it completely before reproducing every Figma frame. This exposes incorrect assumptions about container widths, content length, component variants, and mobile behavior while changes are still cheap.
- Create the theme shell. Add the theme metadata and the minimum files for your chosen architecture. Verify that WordPress recognizes and activates the theme on a local installation.
- Build the document structure. Implement the header, navigation, main landmark, content container, footer, and skip link. Use one logical
h1and preserve heading order instead of choosing headings only for their visual size. - Define the design tokens. Add the colors, type scale, spacing presets, radii, and button styles to
theme.jsonor a coherent CSS layer. Check that a token change updates every component that uses it. - Implement reusable components. Turn repeated Figma components into template parts, patterns, blocks, or classic-theme template parts. Model variants explicitly—for example, a card with artwork, a card without artwork, and a card with a badge—rather than scattering conditional markup through a page.
- Connect real content. Render post titles, featured images, excerpts, taxonomies, menus, and custom fields through WordPress APIs or blocks. Test a long title and a missing image immediately.
- Add responsive rules. Reproduce the layout changes documented in Figma: column counts, navigation behavior, image cropping, spacing, and type adjustments. Use content-driven wrapping rather than assuming every title fits the desktop frame.
- Implement states and interactions. Add hover and focus styles, open and closed menus, validation and error messages, loading states, and reduced-motion behavior. A static screenshot rarely shows every state the production site needs.
- Duplicate only after review. Once the representative page works with real content at all documented widths, compose the remaining templates from the same parts and patterns.
5. Preserve semantics, accessibility, and editor control
Visual fidelity is not a substitute for a usable document. Convert visual hierarchy into semantic HTML and WordPress blocks or template tags. Use landmarks such as header, nav, main, and footer; associate every form control with a label; provide meaningful alternative text for informative images; and ensure decorative images do not create redundant announcements.
Check keyboard operation without a mouse. Focus must be visible against every background, menus must be reachable and dismissible, and interactive cards must expose one sensible link target rather than nested links. Verify contrast for body text, metadata, disabled controls, and focus indicators. Respect reduced-motion preferences for animated transitions. If an editor can remove an image or heading, define a safe empty state rather than relying on the design frame always containing content.

In a block theme, constrain the block settings that could break the composition and provide intentional patterns for common layouts. In a classic theme, validate escaped output, nonces for forms, capability checks for administrative actions, and sanitized custom-field data. Accessibility and security belong in the implementation, not in a final visual polish pass.

6. Export, optimize, and load assets correctly
Export only production assets
Export the images, icons, and illustrations the live design uses. Keep source Figma files separate from production assets. Name files predictably, preserve useful dimensions and aspect ratios, and remove duplicate exports. Use SVG for suitable icons and logos, raster formats for photographic or textured artwork, and the dimensions that match the largest rendered size. Optimize files before committing them to the theme so a large source image is not downloaded to display a small card.
Use WordPress enqueue APIs
WordPress documents wp_enqueue_style() for stylesheets and wp_enqueue_script() for JavaScript. Register and enqueue assets from the appropriate theme hooks, and build their URLs with theme file helpers instead of writing script or link tags directly into templates. WordPress’s guidance is explicit: “You must never manually hard code these HTML elements in your theme.” Enqueueing lets WordPress handle dependencies, ordering, versions, and plugin interaction.
Example for a classic theme
function game_theme_assets() {
wp_enqueue_style(
'game-theme',
get_theme_file_uri( 'assets/css/main.css' ),
array(),
wp_get_theme()->get( 'Version' )
);
wp_enqueue_script(
'game-theme-navigation',
get_theme_file_uri( 'assets/js/navigation.js' ),
array(),
wp_get_theme()->get( 'Version' ),
true
);
}
add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', 'game_theme_assets' );
Use the equivalent block-theme asset strategy when a block or variation needs its own script. Do not load a library site-wide if only one component needs it; conditionally loading expensive assets reduces unnecessary requests.

For a compiled workflow, follow WordPress’s build guidance with Node.js, npm, @wordpress/scripts, a source directory, and a build directory. Keep the source files readable, generate the production bundle consistently, and retain the dependency and version metadata the build creates. Document the commands your team uses for development and production so another developer can reproduce the same output. Do not commit generated files from one machine while omitting the source and package metadata needed to rebuild them.
7. Connect templates to WordPress content and plugins
Figma shows ideal content; WordPress serves variable content. Decide how each design field is represented before writing markup. A title might be a post title, an image a featured image, a score a custom field, and a card list a query filtered by taxonomy. Define what happens when each value is absent, too long, or malformed.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Use WordPress queries or Query blocks for lists that editors expect to update automatically.
- Use menus for navigation instead of hard-coding every link, so labels and destinations remain editable.
- Keep forms connected to the chosen form or membership system and style its generated markup rather than assuming the Figma form is the data source.
- Inspect plugin-generated markup in the browser. Add narrowly scoped styles or block variations instead of global overrides that could break unrelated plugins.
- Keep content model decisions documented beside the component or pattern that consumes them.
If a plugin outputs classes, wrappers, or fields the design did not anticipate, create a compatibility layer and test it with both empty and populated data. Never assume a screenshot of a filled form represents the only production state.
8. Validate on a local or staging WordPress site
Review the implementation where WordPress actually runs, not only in a static browser mockup. Compare representative routes against Figma at every documented breakpoint, then deliberately test content and user conditions that a design file may omit.
Visual and responsive checks
- Compare container edges, baseline alignment, line wrapping, image crops, spacing, colors, shadows, and component states.
- Test the exact desktop and mobile widths shown in Figma plus common widths between them, where breakpoint assumptions often fail.
- Use long game names, multi-line headlines, translated or unusually short labels, and large text settings.
- Check landscape phones, tablets, zoomed pages, and browser text enlargement.
Content and application checks
- Remove featured images, excerpts, ratings, and optional metadata to verify empty states.
- Test empty search results, no posts in an archive, pagination boundaries, 404 routes, and failed form submissions.
- Review logged-in and logged-out views, menu open and closed states, and any role-specific editor controls.
- Change content in the editor and confirm that the layout remains stable without code edits.
- Activate the plugins the site requires and inspect their front-end markup and scripts.
Accessibility and performance checks
- Navigate the entire page with a keyboard and verify focus order, focus visibility, and escape behavior for overlays.
- Check heading hierarchy, labels, alternative text, link purpose, contrast, and reduced-motion behavior.
- Inspect network requests for duplicate assets, missing dependencies, oversized images, and scripts loaded on pages that do not use them.
- Test with caching and optimization enabled on staging so concatenation or defer settings do not hide integration problems.
9. Troubleshoot common conversion failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The page matches one screenshot but breaks with real titles | Fixed heights, untested text lengths, or absolute positioning copied from the frame | Let content define height, set sensible min and max widths, and test long and short strings. |
| Editors cannot change a headline or card | Text or markup was hard-coded in a template | Move the value into post content, a custom field, a block attribute, or an editor pattern. |
| Styles work in a prototype but not in WordPress | CSS was pasted into a template or an asset was not enqueued | Place CSS in the theme’s asset pipeline and enqueue it through WordPress hooks. |
| A menu or form looks different after a plugin is activated | Plugin-generated markup was not included in the design assumptions | Inspect the generated HTML, add scoped compatibility styles, and test the plugin’s empty and error states. |
| Mobile navigation traps focus or cannot be closed | Only the visual open state was implemented | Define keyboard focus order, an accessible toggle label, escape handling, and a reliable close action. |
| Every page has slightly different spacing and colors | Tokens were copied locally instead of centralized | Move repeated values into theme.json presets or shared CSS variables and update components to use them. |
| Page speed drops after adding the design assets | Unoptimized exports, duplicate libraries, or site-wide scripts | Resize and compress images, remove duplicates, and load component scripts only where needed. |
10. Handoff and maintenance
A successful conversion ends with a maintainable theme, not a one-time screenshot match. Record the content model, template map, token names, breakpoint rules, asset sources, build commands, and known plugin integrations. Mark which patterns editors may insert freely and which templates are intentionally locked. Include the Figma file’s version or handoff status so future design changes can be compared against a known baseline.
When a new Figma component appears, first decide whether it is a new variant of an existing WordPress component, a reusable pattern, or genuinely unique page markup. Update the token or shared part before changing individual pages. Review editor changes on staging, then deploy the theme and compiled assets together so templates do not reference files that are not yet present.
How to decide whether the conversion is complete
Use five acceptance criteria rather than relying on a single visual screenshot:
- Fidelity: the spacing, typography, colors, imagery, states, and responsive behavior match the approved design intent.
- Editability: editors can change the content and approved layouts without modifying code.
- Maintainability: repeated decisions live in blocks, parts, patterns,
theme.json, template parts, or a coherent asset pipeline. - Performance and compatibility: assets are optimized and correctly enqueued, dependencies are respected, and required plugins render without breaking the system.
- Accessibility: semantic structure, keyboard operation, focus states, labels, contrast, alternative text, and reduced-motion behavior work in real content.
If any criterion fails, the conversion is not finished even when the home page looks identical to the Figma frame. Figma supplies the visual specification and handoff information; WordPress supplies the content system and runtime. The quality of the result comes from translating both deliberately.
