How to Convert Horizontal Video to Vertical for YouTube Shorts

Use YouTube Studio to extract a moment from an uploaded video, or reframe a local file in Premiere Pro or CapCut. Learn how to keep subjects, captions, and important action visible in a vertical Short.

To turn a horizontal video into a YouTube Short, make a square or vertical version, then reframe the footage so the subject and essential action stay visible. For a full-screen phone presentation, use a 9:16 project. If the video is already on YouTube, YouTube Studio can make a Short from a selected segment; for a local file or precise crop control, use an editor such as Premiere Pro or CapCut. Review the entire result before publishing: a vertical crop removes much of the original frame.

Choose the workflow that fits your video

Starting point Good first option When to use an editor instead
The full video is already uploaded to YouTube Use YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts workflow to select a moment and create a draft. When you need more precise control over framing, captions, or graphics than Studio provides.
You have a local video file Use an editor to create a vertical sequence and adjust the crop. This is already the editor workflow; pick a tool whose controls suit your project.

YouTube’s computer upload instructions accept square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes; they do not require exactly 9:16. A 9:16 frame is a common editing target for a full-screen vertical presentation, not the only eligible aspect ratio. See YouTube’s Shorts upload requirements.

Make a Short from a video already on YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select the source video.
  2. Open Clips and Shorts, then choose Short.
  3. Select the segment by highlighting transcript text or setting its start and end on the timeline. AI suggestions may appear, but YouTube says availability is limited to selected countries and languages.
  4. Preview the selection. Adjust the start and end points, and inspect the framing and captions. Some scenes may show temporary bars in the preview; YouTube says the final version may show a blurred crop in those areas.
  5. Create a draft, complete the upload details, and publish when it is ready.

In the documented cases, the original video is automatically associated as a related video, except for private, unlisted, or Made for Kids Shorts. This Studio workflow is useful for extracting a moment, but its documentation does not promise the frame-by-frame crop controls available in a desktop editor. See YouTube’s Clips and Shorts in Studio help.

Reframe a local file in Premiere Pro

  1. In the Timeline, select the sequence you want to adapt.
  2. Right-click the sequence and choose Auto Reframe Sequence.
  3. Choose Vertical 9:16 as the target ratio and create the sequence.
  4. Play through the entire result. Check every cut and any shot where a person, game action, or other focal subject moves sideways.
  5. If the crop loses important content, open Effect Controls and refine Position, Scale, or Rotation. Add keyframes where the crop needs to follow movement.
  6. Review captions, titles, and other graphics in the vertical composition, then export the finished sequence.

Adobe documents Auto Reframe for individual clips or a complete sequence and describes controls for the target resolution. Automatic reframing is a starting point, not a guarantee that every subject or graphic will remain visible. See Adobe’s Auto Reframe tutorial and Premiere Pro Auto Reframe overview.

Reframe a local file in CapCut

  1. Import the horizontal clip into your project.
  2. Change the canvas ratio to vertical and select 9:16.
  3. Use Auto reframe to generate the crop.
  4. Review the full clip, including cuts, fast action, captions, and overlays. Adjust the crop or composition if the framing misses the subject or removes context.
  5. Export the finished vertical video and check the exported file before uploading.

CapCut’s guide describes this workflow but does not establish that automatic framing will be correct for every clip. Its sports example notes that fast movement, multiple people, and overlays can confuse automatic framing. See CapCut’s auto-reframing guide.

Choose a crop that preserves the important information

Track one main subject

A tight crop often works for a single speaker or a subject kept near the center. Check movement at every cut; when the subject travels across the wide frame, reposition the crop or use keyframes so it follows without abrupt jumps.

Keep more of a wide scene when the edges matter

A 16:9 frame is much wider than a 9:16 frame. Filling a vertical canvas by cropping can cut off teammates, opponents, interface elements, subtitles, or action taking place near the sides. If that would make the clip confusing or misleading, use a layout that retains more of the original image rather than forcing a full-height crop.

Reposition captions and overlays

Text that was legible in the landscape edit may be cut off or obscured after reframing. Check all titles, captions, graphics, and game-interface details in the vertical result, not just the main subject.

Prefer Studio for a quick extraction, an editor for detailed control

Studio is a direct route when the source is already uploaded and its selection and framing options are enough. An editor is more appropriate when the file is local, timing needs detailed adjustment, the subject moves across the frame, or captions and graphics need repositioning.

Check duration, format, and rights before publishing

  • Aspect ratio and length: The current computer upload instructions specify square or vertical video and a maximum duration of three minutes for Shorts. Exactly 9:16 is a practical full-screen target, not the only accepted ratio. See YouTube’s computer upload help.
  • Music on Android: YouTube’s Android upload flow for square or vertical video includes trimming and an editor for text, filters, music, or other audio. Audio chosen from YouTube’s library is limited to 15-second clips according to YouTube’s Android upload help.
  • Copyright: YouTube warns that copyright-protected material used in a Short must be approved for use. Otherwise, it may result in a Content ID claim or a takedown and strike if a valid notice is submitted. Check the rights to the video, game footage, music, and other material before publishing; see the computer and Android guidance.

Troubleshoot common reframing problems

What you see Likely reason What to do
The subject disappears or drifts out of view Automatic framing did not follow movement, or the subject is near the edge. Review the shot, adjust position or scale, and use keyframes where needed in Premiere Pro; in CapCut, inspect the crop and adjust the composition.
Other people or important action are cut off A narrow vertical crop cannot contain the whole wide scene. Keep more of the landscape image in the layout, or choose a segment whose important action fits the vertical frame.
Captions, titles, or overlays are clipped They were positioned for the landscape canvas. Reposition them for the vertical composition and inspect the whole clip, including transitions and cuts.
The Studio preview shows bars on a scene The preview may use temporary bars where the final version uses a blurred crop. Check the preview and the resulting draft; adjust the selection or use an editor if you need more composition control.
AI suggestions are unavailable in Studio The feature is limited by country and language. Select the segment manually using transcript text or timeline timestamps.
