For a one-way virtual concert, create an Amazon IVS low-latency channel, send it a live H.264 video and AAC-LC audio feed from an encoder such as OBS, then test playback with the actual production setup. Use an IVS real-time stage instead when performers or guests need to exchange live media; its participant latency and audience delivery model differ. Before announcing the show, rehearse the full chain, estimate input and viewer-delivery costs, decide whether to record, and confirm that the necessary music rights cover both the livestream and any replay.
Should you use IVS real-time stages or a low-latency channel?
Choose based on who needs to send media, not simply on the size of the event. Amazon Web Services describes low-latency channel delivery as under five seconds and real-time stage latency as under 300 milliseconds. Those are service descriptions, not guaranteed end-to-end timings: location, network conditions, player, encoder, and the rest of the stream chain affect what participants and viewers experience.
| Decision | Low-latency channel | Real-time stage |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | One broadcaster sends a concert to an audience. | Performers, hosts, or guests need to exchange live media as participants. |
| Latency described by AWS | Under 5 seconds for channel delivery. | Under 300 ms among stage participants. |
| How viewers participate | Viewers watch the channel. Add chat or other app features separately if wanted. | Authorized participants join with tokens and a client SDK. Broadcast the stage to a channel when a larger audience needs to watch. |
| Main setup | Encoder, channel, player, and protected stream key. | Stage, token issuing, client SDK, and participant permissions; optional channel broadcast and recording. |
| Billing basis | Video input plus video delivered to viewers. | Participant-hours; add channel input and delivery if broadcasting the stage to a channel. |
A concert with audience Q&A does not necessarily need a real-time stage: viewers can watch a one-way channel while the event application handles chat or questions. Conversely, if remote performers must hear or see one another with interactive timing, a channel alone is not the participant experience they need. When a stage is broadcast to a channel, the channel audience receives channel delivery, not the stage participants’ sub-300-ms experience.
How do I stream a concert with Amazon IVS?
- Prepare AWS access. Create or select an AWS account and give the event operator only the IAM permissions needed for the work. Follow the Amazon IVS low-latency getting-started flow: IAM, channel creation, streaming software, playback, any needed quota checks, and protections against unwanted content and viewers.
- Create the right IVS resource. For a one-way concert, create a low-latency channel. Keep its ingest endpoint and stream key available only to the authorized broadcaster. For interactive performers or guests, create a real-time stage and issue participant tokens only to authorized users; integrate the web, Android, or iOS Broadcast SDK as appropriate.
- Build the production feed. Connect the camera and a clean output from the concert mix to the computer or production system running the encoder. A USB audio mixer for live streaming may help route multiple sources, but it is optional, is not an IVS requirement, and compatibility depends on the host setup. AWS SDK documentation also describes support for external audio devices.
- Configure ingest and encoding. Use the endpoint and key belonging to your channel, rather than credentials copied from an example. Start with H.264 video, AAC-LC audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval; check the limits for the channel type you selected. AWS documents RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest. Unless you have a verified reason to use unencrypted RTMP, prefer RTMPS over TLS 1.2 or later. AWS documents outbound TCP 443 for RTMPS.
- Test playback end to end. Start the encoder and open the intended player on the viewer devices you expect to support. Confirm that video and audio are both present, the mix is intelligible, audio and video stay in sync, and the stream can recover after an encoder reconnect. AWS says its own IVS player provides the lowest latency for low-latency playback; third-party HLS players do not provide the lowest IVS latency.
- Choose recording and protection settings. Enable channel recording only if you need it and have configured its destination and access. Stage participants can be recorded individually to a customer-owned S3 bucket. Consider a separate local OBS recording as a redundancy, then set a retention and access plan for recordings.
- Estimate costs before you promote or sell tickets. Model video input, expected viewer delivery, resolution mix, average watch time, viewer geography, any stage participant-hours, recording and storage, and other AWS services used by the event application.
AWS’s getting-started guide states that the maximum duration of an Amazon IVS stream is 48 hours. Treat that as the documented service limit, not a recommended concert length; plan the event schedule and any necessary stream restart around it.

How do I set up OBS for Amazon IVS?
OBS Studio is a documented encoder option. The details below are the settings to verify, not a substitute for a rehearsal with the actual camera, instruments, mix, computer, network, and viewer device.
- Get the channel credentials. In the AWS console, open your Amazon IVS low-latency channel and use that channel’s ingest endpoint and stream key in OBS. Keep the key secret: anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it in event materials, share it with performers who do not operate the encoder, or reuse example credentials.
- Choose the ingest transport. Use the channel endpoint with RTMPS where supported. AWS recommends TLS 1.2 or later for the secure path and documents outbound TCP 443 for RTMPS. AWS also documents RTMP and SRT, but use an alternate transport only when the production setup requires it and you have verified its security and network behavior.
- Set the video and audio encoders. Use H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. Respect your channel type’s supported resolution and bitrate limits; the reviewed setup guidance does not establish one universal bitrate or resolution that fits every channel and concert. Confirm that OBS is receiving the intended camera feed and the clean stereo mix, rather than a laptop microphone or a monitor feed with unwanted room sound.
- Set keyframes. Use a 2-second keyframe interval as the general AWS starting point. A 1-second interval can reduce latency, but may increase adaptive-bitrate switching and buffering. Test any change under the same network and player conditions planned for the event.
- Route the music mix carefully. Send a balanced live mix from the audio interface or optional USB mixer into OBS. Check instrument and vocal levels, prevent clipping, and listen to the encoded stream from a separate viewer device. A mix that sounds good in the control room may not translate to headphones or phone speakers.
- Record a local backup if needed. OBS local recording can provide a separate copy if network or AWS issues affect the service recording. Verify that the recording is actually being written and that the machine has adequate storage; do not assume the live stream’s recording setting also creates a local file.
AWS documentation notes that a stream-start delay is normal and that encoder interval affects it. Do not promise viewers a precise end-to-end delay based only on the service’s headline latency figure. Rehearse the full chain, including the player your audience will use.

Can Amazon IVS stream audio only?
No. AWS states that “audio-only input is not supported for IVS low-latency streaming.” An audio-led concert still needs a video stream. Use a camera feed or another appropriate video source alongside the audio mix, and verify that both reach the channel in rehearsal.
AWS lists H.264 video and AAC-LC audio support. Its documented audio settings include 96–320 Kbps, 44.1 or 48 kHz, and up to stereo. These are service constraints, not a guarantee that a particular concert mix will sound right; test levels, channel routing, synchronization, and playback on the devices your audience is likely to use.

How much does an Amazon IVS livestream cost?
For low-latency streaming, budget separately for video sent into IVS and video delivered to viewers. Viewer delivery varies with resolution, viewing hours, and billing region. A real-time stage uses participant-hours; if you broadcast it to a channel, include the channel input and output costs too. Recording storage and requests in S3 are separate, and your event application may use additional AWS services.
As an illustration—not an event quote—Amazon Web Services’ pricing page gave an estimate of $18.40 for a two-hour standard-channel event under its stated North American scenario: 200 viewers, each watching half the show. The figure is AWS’s pricing example checked October 3, 2026; a different audience size, viewing duration, resolution mix, or geography changes the estimate. Use the current AWS pricing calculator with your actual assumptions before setting ticket prices or committing to promotion.

Plan music rights before the livestream or replay
Streaming technology does not establish that a concert is legally cleared. AWS’s technical documentation does not determine whether your licenses cover public performance, synchronization, recording, replay, or availability in each territory. Confirm the applicable rights for the event’s jurisdiction, repertoire, venue, and distribution plan with an appropriate rights holder or qualified adviser before promoting the livestream. Resolve recording and replay rights separately from the right to perform music live; do not assume permission for one covers the other.
Common Amazon IVS concert problems and fixes
- No audio reaches the channel: Check that OBS is receiving the intended audio device and input, the correct mix bus is selected, and AAC-LC encoding is configured. Low-latency IVS requires video as well as audio.
- Viewers hear a poor or distorted mix: Check for clipping, unintended room or monitor audio, incorrect channel routing, and excessive or insufficient source levels. Listen to the actual encoded playback on a separate device rather than relying only on the control-room monitor.
- Audio and video drift out of sync: Recheck the audio routing, capture devices, and encoder configuration, then test the same chain and network intended for showtime. The reviewed AWS material does not establish a single universal correction value for every setup.
- OBS cannot connect: Confirm that the channel is active, its own endpoint and stream key are entered correctly, and the network permits the selected transport. For RTMPS, verify outbound TCP 443 and TLS 1.2 or later support. Keep the stream key private while troubleshooting.
- Playback latency is higher than expected: Check which player the audience uses. AWS identifies its IVS player as the lowest-latency option for low-latency playback; third-party HLS players do not provide the lowest IVS latency. Also account for geography, network, and the full stream chain.
- Playback buffers or quality switches disrupt the show: Test the complete connection and encoder setup. If you changed the keyframe interval to 1 second to reduce latency, compare it with the general 2-second starting point; AWS notes that 1 second may increase adaptive-bitrate switching and buffering.
- The archive is missing or inaccessible: Check that recording was enabled and that the destination and access configuration are correct. For stage recordings, verify the customer-owned S3 bucket configuration. Maintain an independently verified local recording if a backup copy is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
Amazon IVS is a do-it-yourself live production service: you operate the encoder and event chain. If instead you want uploaded, pre-recorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not an Amazon IVS encoder or a way to broadcast a live camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
