For a prerecorded video, preserve its aspect ratio, choose a deliberate output canvas, and match YouTube’s current ingest guidance for the codec and frame rate you select. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Those settings can help produce a suitable ingest feed, but they do not by themselves make a stream reliable for 24/7 operation.
This guide explains how to choose resolution and framing, what to check before encoding, and how to rehearse and monitor an FFmpeg loop. Because no end-to-end command has been verified against sample media here, treat the examples as configuration guidance: confirm options against your installed FFmpeg version and inspect the resulting video before relying on it.
Choose the output canvas before resizing
Decide what shape and size the YouTube stream should send before choosing a scaling method. A common target is 1920×1080 (16:9), but it is not automatically best for every source or host. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps; use the current encoder guidance for the precise settings applicable to your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Keep the source proportions
Do not force a differently shaped source into the target dimensions by independently stretching its width and height. That distorts faces, gameplay, and other objects. When the source and canvas aspect ratios differ, choose one of two presentations:

- Fit the whole image and pad: preserve all source content and fill the unused canvas area with bars or another deliberate background.
- Fill the canvas and crop: use the full canvas, accepting that some content at the edges will be cut off.
Check the final output dimensions and watch representative footage. The right choice depends on what is near the frame edges and how the video should appear to viewers.
Resolution and frame rate are separate decisions
Output resolution describes the frame dimensions; bitrate describes how much data is used to encode it. Raising resolution does not itself select an appropriate bitrate. Choose a frame rate that suits the source and your encoding capacity, and avoid unnecessary frame-rate conversion unless the workflow calls for it. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into viewer formats, so sending a particular resolution does not guarantee viewers will receive that same format.
Set bitrate, keyframes, codec, and transport
Check YouTube’s current Live encoder guidance before going live. Its page lists RTMP and RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and lists AAC or MP3 audio. Encoder availability depends on the software and hardware you actually use.

Use the bitrate for the exact output
YouTube Help’s page, accessed in 2026, recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for H.264 at 240p–720p30. These are recommendations for those specific ingestion settings, not universal targets or a guarantee of picture quality. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult the current YouTube table rather than extrapolating from these figures. Your upload connection also needs sufficient stable capacity for the chosen output.

YouTube’s current guidance recommends CBR. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the encoder accordingly, then verify what the encoder is actually producing; do not assume that selecting a preset necessarily results in the intended interval.
Check audio and color as well as video
YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Confirm that the input has the audio you expect and that your output configuration carries it. If the file has no suitable audio track, decide deliberately whether to provide one rather than assuming a valid audio signal will appear automatically.

Build and validate the resize configuration
FFmpeg’s -s option sets frame size and, when used as an output option, inserts a scale filter at the end of the corresponding filter graph. FFmpeg’s documentation advises using the scale filter directly when its position in the graph matters. A scaling filter may need to be coordinated with padding or cropping, pixel format, deinterlacing, or frame-rate conversion.
There is no single universally suitable filter string: the correct configuration depends on the source dimensions and aspect ratio, target canvas, framing choice, and media characteristics. Confirm filter syntax against the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your host. After encoding, inspect the actual dimensions and play the output to check geometry, motion, and audio. Do not deploy a configuration just because FFmpeg completed without an error.
Make a representative test
- Choose a representative segment. Include the fastest motion, fine detail, transitions, and loud or quiet sections that occur in the full video.
- Encode using the intended output settings. Use the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, audio configuration, and resize/framing method.
- Inspect the result. Confirm the output dimensions, check that the image is not stretched or unexpectedly cropped, and listen for missing or distorted audio.
- Rehearse on the intended host. Watch FFmpeg’s logs and reported encoding speed for long enough to determine whether the host keeps up with real time under the intended workload.
Loop a prerecorded input with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option is used in a community example for repeating a video input. A loop option repeats the input; it does not ensure a stable continuous YouTube broadcast, prevent encoding overload, or provide a complete recovery and monitoring system.

Place the loop option as an input option for the media file, and make sure the rest of the command explicitly configures your chosen input, video and audio handling, encoder, and output destination. The exact complete command depends on those choices; no end-to-end scaling-and-streaming command has been verified for every source and FFmpeg build. Consult the installed version’s help and documentation, and rehearse with the actual file and target settings before using the workflow continuously.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rehearse and monitor the 24/7 stream
A file that loops and a live stream that remains healthy are different things. A September 2022 FFmpeg-user archive post about FFmpeg 4.4 described high CPU use and loss of YouTube’s live indicator during an attempted loop. That is one user’s report, not evidence that -stream_loop -1 causes the problem or that current FFmpeg will behave the same way.
- Run a rehearsal with the intended input, audio, output resolution, codec, and encoder settings.
- Check FFmpeg’s logs and reported encoding speed; investigate if it cannot maintain real-time output.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that data is arriving and stream health remains acceptable. Review any displayed warnings or messages.
- Plan monitoring and restart behavior separately. The available guidance does not establish a complete watchdog design or guarantee uptime.
YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. If ingest is unhealthy, check the live console and your configured frame rate and keyframe interval rather than assuming that a loop alone addresses the cause.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| People or objects look stretched | The source and output canvas have different aspect ratios, and both dimensions may have been forced independently. | Preserve proportions and choose fit-with-padding or fill-with-cropping. Inspect the resulting video. |
| Important picture content is missing | A fill-and-crop presentation may be cutting off the source edges. | Use fit-and-pad instead, or reframe only after checking what the crop removes. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem | Check the current YouTube guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval; inspect the Live Control Room messages. | Correct the mismatched setting, then rehearse again. Do not infer a universal bitrate from a recommendation for a different output. |
| FFmpeg falls behind or the live indicator disappears | Check the logs and reported encoding speed, the host’s ability to keep up, and the incoming stream status. | Repeat a controlled rehearsal with the intended settings and investigate the specific bottleneck. A loop option alone does not provide operational recovery. |
| Video arrives without expected sound | Confirm that the source contains the intended audio and that the output configuration carries an appropriate track. | Correct the audio handling and test the result by listening before the long run. |
