For a 24/7 YouTube stream, convert and check your video in HandBrake, then send it to YouTube Live with a separate encoder that can loop the file and recover from interruptions.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake transcodes a source video into an output file. It does not, by itself, send a live feed to YouTube or keep a video looping on a channel. Continuous broadcasting requires a separate live encoder, a YouTube stream URL and key, and a setup capable of looping or scheduling the program.
For a YouTube-oriented starting point, HandBrake’s Web > Creator presets produce MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. The right preset depends on the source and intended resolution and frame rate; check the finished file rather than assuming one preset suits every video. See HandBrake’s official presets.
Convert a video in HandBrake
- Open the source. Load the video you intend to play during the stream.
- Choose a Creator preset. Select one suited to the source and intended output size and frame rate. These presets provide an MP4, H.264, AAC stereo starting point.
- Set the frame-rate behavior. Where appropriate, preserve the source frame rate. HandBrake’s Constant Frame Rate (CFR) setting makes the output exactly one frame rate throughout. Peak Frame Rate (PFR) limits higher-rate portions while leaving lower-rate portions unchanged. Neither setting substitutes for configuring a live encoder’s settings.
- Enable Web Optimised for MP4 if useful. This moves the MP4 container header to the beginning of the file (often called fast start), which can help web delivery. It does not make the video stream continuously. HandBrake explains the option in its Web Optimised documentation.
- Encode and review the output. Play the converted file through and check that both picture and audio work before using it as a live source. File-size and quality trade-offs depend on the source and encoding choices; there is no single quality value established for every video. HandBrake explains the distinction between quality-based and bitrate-based encoding in its Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate guide.
Send the file to YouTube Live with a separate encoder
After conversion, load the file into a live encoder that supports your intended playback and continuous operation. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and use YouTube’s encoder setup to obtain the stream URL and key; provide them to the encoder as directed by its documentation. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating a live stream with an encoder.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure the encoder for YouTube’s live-ingest requirements, then test the picture, motion, and audio and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Use live bitrate recommendations, not HandBrake file targets
YouTube’s current recommended H.264 live bitrates, as listed in its guidance accessed in 2026, include:

| Live output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These figures are live-ingest recommendations, not HandBrake file-encoding targets. Choose a live quality your connection can sustain and leave bandwidth headroom; YouTube’s networking advice recommends 20% headroom. Test the stream and monitor its health using YouTube’s streaming tips.
Keep the distinction between file settings and live settings
HandBrake’s Creator preset, frame-rate, and Web Optimised choices affect the video file. YouTube’s CBR, keyframe interval, live bitrate, and ingest protocol apply to the separate live encoder. Do not treat the file’s frame rate or encoding bitrate as a replacement for those live settings.

YouTube’s separate upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264, AAC-LC/Opus/Eclipsa Audio, fast start, and encoding at the recorded frame rate. Those upload recommendations are not the same as live encoder requirements. Refer to YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings when preparing an uploaded file.
Plan for looping and interruptions
For a 24/7 broadcast, the live encoder—not HandBrake—must handle looping or scheduling and reconnection or recovery. The exact setup depends on the encoder you choose; no universal loop procedure or recovery behavior applies to every encoder. Consult that encoder’s current documentation and YouTube’s current stream policies, and verify the setup before relying on it to run continuously.

- The video converts but does not appear live. HandBrake created a file, not a broadcast. Load it into a separate live encoder and configure the YouTube stream URL and key.
- The output plays poorly or has missing audio. Review the encoded file from beginning to end before streaming. Check the source, preset, and output audio, then encode again if necessary.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health. The upload connection may not sustain the selected live quality. Lower the encoder’s live output settings as needed, preserve bandwidth headroom, and test again.
- The stream stops instead of repeating. Confirm that the chosen encoder supports looping or scheduling and that it is configured for the intended behavior. HandBrake’s Web Optimised option does not create a loop.
- The stream does not recover after a dropped connection. Check the encoder’s reconnect behavior and YouTube’s current guidance. Recovery depends on the live setup; do not assume the converted file or HandBrake will restart a broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
