For a YouTube playlist made from separate uploads, convert each file to a shared container and codec—typically MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio—without changing its frame rate or aspect ratio unless you have a specific reason. A playlist is a collection of individual uploads; you do not need to join the videos into one file.
Choose what “consistent format” means
A practical default is to standardize the container and codecs while preserving each source’s native resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio. That makes files more uniform without needlessly changing how they look or play. YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and 48 kHz audio. It also advises encoding at the frame rate at which the footage was recorded. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings are guidance, not a requirement to force every source into identical dimensions or bitrate.
- Standardize the file format: use MP4 and H.264 video, encoding audio as AAC-LC when needed.
- Preserve source properties by default: keep the recorded frame rate and aspect ratio. YouTube’s player adapts to different aspect ratios; avoid stretching footage or adding padding without a delivery requirement. See YouTube’s guidance on video aspect ratios and resolutions.
- Change dimensions or frame rate only deliberately: if a project needs one canvas size, decide whether to scale and pad or crop. Those choices affect the framing; do not apply them blindly across mixed footage.
Inspect representative files first
Before batch processing, inspect at least one file from each kind of source. Files can differ in video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, rotation, pixel format, color metadata, audio layout, and the number or type of streams. A batch command based on the wrong assumptions may omit a desired track or fail on an incompatible stream.
Use ffprobe to inspect a file’s streams and metadata:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.mov
Review which video and audio streams you want to keep and whether the file has subtitles, data streams, or attachments. FFmpeg chooses streams automatically unless you specify them with -map; do not assume automatic selection matches your intent. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for stream selection and option order: options apply to the input or output that follows them.
Choose between remuxing and re-encoding
Remux compatible streams without re-encoding
If a file already contains streams compatible with MP4 and you do not need to change codecs or apply filters, streamcopy can put those streams in an MP4 container without decoding and re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4
This is a pattern, not a guarantee for every input. It is fast and avoids quality loss from another encoding pass, but it cannot apply filters and may fail if a stream is not compatible with the destination container. Check the result rather than assuming that changing the filename or container is enough.

Re-encode to normalize codecs or apply changes
When the source codecs are unsuitable, or you need filters or other deliberate changes, encode a new MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. For example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -ar 48000 -movflags +faststart output.mp4
This selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream; the question mark makes that audio mapping optional. It converts video to H.264 with 4:2:0 pixel format and audio to AAC at 48 kHz. It preserves the source dimensions and frame rate unless the input or another option changes them. If you need a different audio stream, inspect the file and adjust the mappings. Remove or change mappings as needed rather than copying every subtitle, data, or attachment stream into MP4 without checking compatibility.

Re-encoding takes longer than streamcopy and can change quality and file size. The result depends on the source and encoding settings; no single preset is lossless or best for every file. For a common quality-based H.264 starting point, add -crf 23 and select a speed preset such as -preset medium, then review the output for your material. These are choices, not universal quality guarantees. If file size or a delivery specification matters more than a quality-based setting, choose settings for that requirement and check the output.
Use bitrate figures as YouTube recommendations, not caps
YouTube’s current recommended upload settings give resolution- and frame-rate-specific video bitrates for SDR. For example, the table lists 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps; 12 Mbps for 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps; and 35–45 Mbps for 2160p/4K at 24, 25, or 30 fps. It lists 384 kbps for stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory minimums or bitrate caps. Use the row that matches the output resolution and frame rate; do not force every file to the same bitrate just to make the playlist consistent. See YouTube’s current encoding guidance.
Batch-convert a folder carefully
After a sample conversion plays correctly and its metadata matches your plan, process the rest of the files. On a Unix-like shell, a simple loop for MKV inputs might look like this:

This assumes the files are in the current directory, each has a usable first video stream, and the first audio stream is the one you want. It preserves native dimensions and frame rate. Adapt the input pattern and mappings to your files; for mixed containers, inspect first and do not run a command that assumes every file has the same streams or layout. Keep originals until you have checked the converted files.
Check outputs before uploading
- Open representative outputs in a video player and check picture, sound, orientation, and any important subtitles or tracks.
- Inspect the output metadata with
ffprobe -hide_banner converted/example.mp4. Confirm the container, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio sample rate, and selected streams. - Check that the result follows your chosen policy. Files can share MP4, H.264, and AAC while retaining different native dimensions and frame rates.
- Upload each video separately to YouTube and add the uploads to a playlist. A playlist does not require concatenation.
If you meant one continuous video, concatenate instead
Joining clips is a different task from preparing separate playlist uploads. FFmpeg offers two approaches, and the right one depends on whether the inputs meet the required format conditions.

Use the concat demuxer when inputs are compatible
The concat demuxer can join compatible files without re-encoding. Create a text file such as list.txt with one entry per input:
file 'part1.mp4'
file 'part2.mp4'
Then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy joined.mp4
This is only appropriate when the inputs satisfy the concat demuxer’s compatibility conditions, including matching relevant stream properties. If they differ, streamcopy may not produce a valid or consistent result. See the FFmpeg concat FAQ.
Use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed
When clips need normalization or are not suitable for the demuxer, use the concat filter and encode the output. The filter requires compatible inputs for the segments being joined, so scale, pad, or otherwise normalize streams as needed before concatenating. FFmpeg notes that the concat filter is recommended when re-encoding is required. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ and filter documentation for the appropriate graph for your inputs; a single universal command would make assumptions about stream count, dimensions, frame rate, and audio.
Troubleshoot common conversion problems
- “Could not find tag” or an output-container error: a copied stream may not be supported in MP4. Re-encode the incompatible stream or choose a compatible container after checking the stream details.
- No sound in the output: the source may have no audio stream, or automatic stream selection may have chosen another stream. Inspect with
ffprobeand explicitly map the intended audio stream;-map 0:a:0?maps the first audio stream only if one exists. - Wrong language or commentary track: a file may contain multiple audio streams. Inspect their metadata and map the desired stream rather than relying on the first-audio example.
- Unexpected subtitles or other streams: explicit mappings can limit output to the video and audio streams you chose. Add other streams only after checking that the destination container supports them.
- Clips do not join cleanly with streamcopy: the inputs may not meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility conditions. Normalize and re-encode with the concat filter instead.
- Framing looks wrong: check rotation and aspect-ratio metadata before applying scale or crop filters. Do not stretch footage to force identical dimensions; decide whether the project calls for padding or cropping.
