How to Copy a GameCube Disc to an ISO or GCM File

A GameCube disc is not copied like a normal CD. Use a homebrew-capable Wii with CleanRip to create and verify an ISO/GCM image, then preserve it or convert a copy to RVZ for Dolphin.

You usually cannot copy a GameCube game like a normal CD. The practical method is to dump your original GameCube optical disc to an ISO/GCM image, then use that verified image in Dolphin or a compatible homebrew loader. For most owners, the easiest route is a homebrew-capable Wii running CleanRip. A Wii U cannot directly rip GameCube discs, and most ordinary PC CD/DVD drives cannot read them correctly.

Use only discs and files you have the legal right to use. Copyright exceptions for personal backups vary by country; Nintendo expressly opposes unauthorized copying, downloading, distribution and circumvention devices in its intellectual-property and piracy policy.

What “copying a GameCube CD” actually means

“GameCube CD” is common shorthand, but GameCube software is distributed on Nintendo optical discs using a proprietary mini-DVD-format design, not as an ordinary music CD. A normal computer drive may detect that a disc is inserted while still being unable to read its game data.

The useful result is a disc dump or disc image: normally an ISO or GCM file. Dolphin lists an uncompressed GameCube image at roughly 1.4 GB (about 1.36 GiB), although file-system overhead, split settings and conversions can change the visible size.

The recommended method: Wii plus CleanRip

Dolphin’s official ripping guide recommends CleanRip for GameCube discs. CleanRip 2.4 is identified by its project documentation as the current release dated January 28, 2026, with read-only verification, CRC32 data and BCA dumping.

What you need

  • An original GameCube disc.
  • A compatible Nintendo Wii with a working GameCube-compatible optical drive.
  • The Homebrew Channel or another way to launch homebrew.
  • A Wii or GameCube controller.
  • CleanRip, obtained from the CleanRip repository or Open Shop Channel.
  • An SD card or USB device with at least 1.35 GB free; 2 GB or more free is a safer target.
  • A computer for copying, checking and optionally compressing the result.

CleanRip supports FAT-family storage and current documentation also lists exFAT and NTFS. FAT32 is the least surprising first choice, particularly because a full GameCube image fits on it. Wiis can be selective about USB devices, so a different brand, capacity or directly connected device may be necessary. An MBR partition table is generally safer than GPT for this use.

Step-by-step dump

  1. Prepare the storage. Format a reliable SD card or USB device in a Wii-compatible file system, leaving more than 1.35 GB free.
  2. Install CleanRip. Put the application on the storage used by the Homebrew Channel, following the layout included with your CleanRip release rather than assuming a particular folder name.
  3. Open the Homebrew Channel and launch CleanRip.
  4. Insert the original disc when CleanRip asks for it. Seat it correctly and do not use a copied or downloaded image as a substitute for the source disc.
  5. Select the destination and chunk options. If the device can hold the entire image, Dolphin recommends the maximum chunk size and disabling “New device per chunk.” Labels can vary between releases, so follow the prompts shown by your version.
  6. Start the dump. Keep the Wii powered on. Do not remove the disc or storage device while reading is in progress.
  7. Allow verification to finish. CleanRip can save MD5, SHA-1 and CRC32 values and, where data exists, compare a rip with Redump information. Keep its dump-information or metadata file beside the image.
  8. Copy every output file to your computer. If CleanRip created chunks, copy all of them with their names unchanged.
  9. Test the untouched image in Dolphin. Add its folder to Dolphin’s game library, check the title, game ID and region, then play beyond the title screen.

A successful boot is useful evidence but not proof of a perfect archival dump. Retain the original image, metadata and hashes, and keep a second copy on separate storage.

Can a GameCube dump be made without a Wii?

Yes. A GameCube can run CleanRip, but it needs a homebrew entry point and suitable storage. Typical setups use Swiss launched through an exploit or hardware modification, an SD2SP2 adapter on compatible models, PicoBoot or another IPL boot method, or an optical-drive emulator with backup support. CleanRip documents GameCube support, front SD, USB 2.0, SD2SP2 and newer file systems.

This route is usually more involved than using a compatible Wii: the console may need opening, a mod or exploit, and additional setup. An SD2SP2 adapter is storage hardware, not by itself a boot method.

FlippyDrive: an integrated GameCube option

FlippyDrive is a current optical-drive emulator that keeps the original drive usable and includes a disc-backup utility. Its documentation describes a solderless installation, but you still open the console and remove the drive assembly to fit the flex connection; see the official installation guide.

  1. Install the hardware and prepare a compatible microSD card.
  2. Power on the GameCube while holding X to enter the bootloader.
  3. Select backup, insert the original disc if needed, and choose microSD or a supported network destination.
  4. Wait for the read and checksum process to complete, then copy the image to a computer if required.

The backup documentation says the current fallback mode can take approximately 25 minutes to more than an hour; the fast mode is not currently available in that documentation. A Crowd Supply listing showed approximately $65–$99 depending on configuration when checked, but live price, stock and shipping can change.

Why a normal PC optical drive is a poor choice

Most internal and USB DVD drives cannot correctly read GameCube discs. Dolphin documents an advanced exception involving certain Hitachi-LG Data Storage Blu-ray drives based on the MediaTek MT1959 chipset, custom OmniDrive firmware and redumper b699 or newer. This is an enthusiast procedure, not a normal “insert and copy” workflow.

Do not flash arbitrary hardware. Exact model identification, firmware backup and recovery planning are essential because an incorrect firmware operation can disable a drive. If you do not already own the specifically supported hardware and understand its risks, use a Wii or compatible GameCube setup instead.

Choosing a file format

Format Best use Important qualification
ISO/GCM Archival master and maximum compatibility Raw, uncompressed image; about 1.36–1.4 GiB for a full disc.
RVZ Dolphin collection storage Lossless compression supported by modern Dolphin; keep the raw master first.
CISO/WBFS Space-saving loader use Remove unused disc information and are poorer preservation masters.
NKit Processing or reducing certain existing dumps Not a way to turn an arbitrary downloaded or altered image into a verified original dump.

Dolphin’s format FAQ supports GCM/ISO, GCZ, CISO, WBFS, WIA and RVZ, and recommends RVZ when compressing. Preserve one verified ISO/GCM, then create an RVZ derivative for everyday Dolphin use.

Verification and preservation

  • Keep the untouched ISO/GCM and CleanRip’s dump-information file together.
  • Record MD5, SHA-1 and CRC32 values, game ID, region, date and hardware used.
  • Compare hashes with a trusted DAT or Redump entry where one exists.
  • Keep a second copy on separate storage.
  • Do not confuse a file that boots with proof that every sector is accurate.

A normal full image is roughly 1.36–1.4 GiB. CleanRip completing without read errors, reporting verification results and producing expected metadata are stronger indicators than a title screen alone.

Troubleshooting

The Wii does not recognize the disc

Check for dirt, scratches, incorrect seating, a failing optical drive, region issues or a non-GameCube disc. Nintendo’s cleaning procedure uses a soft cotton cloth dampened with water, wiping in straight lines from the center outward. Avoid solvents, abrasive cleaners and resurfacing machines. If several known-good discs fail, suspect the drive.

CleanRip cannot see the SD card or USB device

  • Try another brand, capacity or port, connected directly rather than through a hub.
  • Use FAT32 and an MBR partition table.
  • Confirm more than 1.35 GB is free.
  • For a USB hard drive, provide adequate power; a powered enclosure or Y-cable may be needed.

The output is split into files

Copy every part to the computer, preserve the names and do not launch only the first file. Use Dolphin or the appropriate joining/conversion tool for that naming scheme. A rerun with a storage device and chunk setting that permit one image can simplify the collection.

Verification fails

  1. Clean the disc and retry.
  2. Try a different SD or USB device.
  3. If a modchip is installed, ensure region patching is disabled; CleanRip documents cases where patching can produce bad GameCube rips.
  4. Compare against a trusted DAT and, if possible, test another console or optical drive.

Dolphin reports an invalid file

Check that all chunks were copied, the name was not changed incorrectly, the dump was not interrupted and the format is supported by your Dolphin version. Test the untouched ISO/GCM before converting it to RVZ or another format.

It works in Dolphin but not on a real GameCube

Original-hardware loaders have separate constraints: Swiss or another loader may not support the chosen compression, the SD card may be fragmented, and games with audio streaming or other behaviors can expose compatibility limits. Dolphin compatibility and GameCube-loader compatibility are not interchangeable claims.

Can you burn the image to a blank disc?

Do not treat a standard CD-R or DVD-R burn as an equivalent replacement for an original GameCube disc. Drive authentication, laser calibration, media quality, image preparation, region restrictions and hardware modification all affect whether a burned disc works. Modchips and other circumvention products can damage hardware and affect warranty coverage; Nintendo discusses these risks in its piracy FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For practical use, load a legally created image from SD or another supported device, or run it in Dolphin, rather than buying blank mini-DVD media and expecting a normal burn to work.

What each stage is—and is not

  • Dumping: reading your original disc into an image.
  • Preserving: keeping the raw image, metadata, hashes and redundant copies.
  • Emulating: running the image in Dolphin.
  • Loading on original hardware: using Swiss, FlippyDrive or another compatible setup.
  • Downloading: obtaining someone else’s image, which is not the same as making your own backup and may be unauthorized.

The safest general workflow remains: original disc → compatible Wii and CleanRip → verified ISO/GCM → optional RVZ copy for Dolphin or a supported homebrew loader.
