His portals can move him, you, or his projectiles, so committing before you identify the destination is usually the mistake he is designed to punish.
What you are actually countering
Angstrom Levy is not built around one projectile or one normal attack. His portals are the structure that connects his offense, defense, movement and traps. The official move description says a vertical Portal can teleport Angstrom, his opponent or one of his projectiles. A horizontal Ground Portal can also move either fighter, is marked Armor Break and can lead to a rising uppercut. That means the portal itself is often only the first decision in a sequence.

The practical goal is therefore not to swing at every portal animation. Your goal is to deny the follow-up Angstrom is trying to create. Track where the portal is placed, identify whether he is threatening your position or his own, and preserve a defensive option until the destination is clear. The developer has described portals as the center of his space control, trap-setting and surprise interactions, so a disciplined response is more reliable than a memorized “punish” that assumes one outcome.

How to defend against the vertical Portal
Keep the portal and Angstrom in the same mental picture
The vertical Portal can change the location of the fighter, the opponent or a projectile. If you watch only Angstrom’s body, the portal can make your visual read obsolete; if you watch only the portal, you may miss the overhead kick. Keep your eyes on the anchor and the destination space together. When the portal appears at a new height or side because of directional input, update your expected attack lane immediately.

Prepare for the teleporting overhead kick
The move description specifically identifies a teleporting overhead kick. Treat that as the primary close-range threat whenever Angstrom places a vertical portal near your position. Use the normal standing-guard or anti-air response your character has for an overhead approach, but do not press a button simply because the portal appeared. The safe choice depends on where the portal opens and whether Angstrom actually commits to the kick.
Do not chase the first disappearance
A disappearance is not proof that Angstrom is retreating. He may be moving to another side of the screen, appearing above you, or using the portal to alter a projectile’s route. Hold your position long enough to confirm the destination, then move toward the open space rather than toward the last place you saw him. Chasing too early can put you underneath the kick or into the path of a redirected orb.
Re-evaluate projectile trajectories
Because a Portal can teleport one of Angstrom’s projectiles, the line you saw at launch is not necessarily the line you need to block. A projectile approaching a portal may emerge from a different location, while a charged Fastball can return to Angstrom after its first travel. Keep a defensive movement option available until both the portal and the orb have completed their interaction.

Respect the Armor Break property
Ground Portal is marked Armor Break. Do not make an armor-based special, reversal or charged challenge your default answer when the horizontal portal is active. Armor is not a universal escape here; a failed challenge can leave you in the exact position Angstrom selected. Use ordinary movement, guarding or a clearly timed evasive option until you know where he is going to emerge.

Watch for the rising uppercut from below
The official description says Angstrom can teleport below the opponent for a rising uppercut. When the Ground Portal is placed under or in front of you, keep your attention low as well as high. A jump, forward dash or attack aimed at his previous location can lose to the uppercut if you have not confirmed his destination. If your character has a reliable anti-air or downward-facing defensive option, reserve it for the moment you see the actual rise rather than guessing at the portal animation.
Change your response when the portal moves
Directional input changes Ground Portal’s position. A response that worked against a portal beside you may fail when Angstrom places it farther away or on the opposite side. Use the portal’s location to decide whether to hold ground, retreat, cross the screen or let Angstrom spend the movement without contact. Your objective is to make him appear at a distance where his follow-up cannot immediately reach you.
Take only confirmed opportunities
The available official descriptions do not provide frame data, recovery, block advantage or a guaranteed punish window. If Ground Portal ends with Angstrom clearly missing beside you, use your character’s normal confirmed punish. If you are unsure whether he is still protected by the portal sequence, block and reset the spacing instead of gambling on a button. This is slower than a universal punish claim, but it avoids turning an unverified read into free damage for Angstrom.

Fastball: plan for the return
Fastball’s charged version returns to Angstrom. The first pass may tempt you to advance, jump or attack the recovery. Before doing so, identify where the orb will travel after it reaches the end of its path and where Angstrom will be when it comes back. A retreating step or short pause can make the return predictable; charging forward without that check can place you between Angstrom and the returning orb.

Overflow: cover the angle, not just the first shot
Overflow sends a stream of orbs that can be angled up or down. Do not lock yourself into a single jump arc or crouch position because the first orb arrived at one height. Move toward a lane that gives you room to change direction after the angle changes. If you are near a corner, prioritize escaping the stream’s line before attempting offense; a small amount of open space is more valuable than a speculative attack.
Guardian: use the delay without forgetting the launch
Guardian creates four orbiting orbs that fly forward after a set period. The delay is a chance to improve your position, force Angstrom to spend time defending himself, or disengage from the corner. It is not permission to ignore the orbs. Keep their orbit in view, and choose a route that remains clear when all four launch. If you attack Angstrom during the delay, be ready to stop your string and defend as the launch timing approaches.
What to do in neutral
Start at a distance where destinations are visible
Portal interactions are hardest to read when you are already touching Angstrom or trapped at the edge. At neutral, favor a range that lets you see the portal anchor and the space behind it. This does not mean permanently retreating. It means choosing a distance from which you can react to a teleport rather than guessing which side of your character he selected.

Move in short, reversible steps
Use brief walks, backsteps and controlled dashes instead of a long commitment whenever a portal is active. Short movement lets you block, jump or change direction after Angstrom reveals the destination. A full-screen dash can carry you directly into a teleporting kick or into an orb path that was redirected through the portal.

Attack the recovery you can see
Angstrom wants you to swing at the portal setup before the actual choice is known. Wait for a visible miss, a whiffed kick or an orb pattern that has clearly passed, then use your normal fastest confirmed attack. Do not label a move safe or unsafe from the animation alone; the reviewed official material does not establish those frame properties.
Use the corner as a warning, not a plan
Being cornered reduces the number of destinations you can choose, but blindly jumping out can expose you to the overhead or rising uppercut. First identify whether the active portal is above, beside or below you. Then choose the escape that moves away from the portal’s likely arrival point. If no route is clear, block long enough to see the first committed attack before spending your escape resource.

There is no published universal counter sequence. Angstrom’s design intentionally rewards traps and surprise, so adaptation should happen one interaction at a time.
- Record the portal location. Note whether Angstrom places the portal above, beside or below you, and whether he changes its side with directional input.
- Identify the follow-up. Was it the teleporting overhead kick, the Ground Portal uppercut, a reposition, or a projectile interaction?
- Choose one low-risk answer. Hold guard, take a short step, retreat from the orb lane or wait for the destination. Do not test several risky answers at once.
- Check the next repetition. If he repeats the same portal and follow-up, begin moving before the attack reaches you. If he changes it, return to observation rather than assuming the previous answer still applies.
- Take your turn only after confirmation. Once the attack misses or the orb pattern clears, use your character’s established pressure or punish route.
This loop turns the portals from a series of surprises into a set of choices you can catalog. You are not trying to predict every portal; you are making repeated choices less profitable for Angstrom.

How to choose a character without claiming a proven counter
The available official material does not establish a best matchup or a character-specific counter-pick. If you are selecting a roster member for this matchup, evaluate tools rather than a tier-list label:
- Reliable movement: short dashes, air control or a retreat option can keep you outside the portal’s preferred arrival range.
- Consistent anti-air coverage: a move that can answer the teleporting overhead or rising uppercut after confirmation is useful, provided you do not throw it out on every portal animation.
- Projectile interaction: a way to block, redirect or safely advance through orb patterns reduces the value of Fastball, Overflow and Guardian.
- Low-commitment defense: options that let you guard or reposition without relying on armor are preferable against Ground Portal’s Armor Break property.
- Corner escape: a dependable way to leave the edge helps when a portal and delayed orbs overlap.
These are selection criteria, not a verified ranking. Test the specific interaction with your chosen character before treating it as a matchup answer.
Training drills for portal defense
Vertical Portal recognition
- Have Angstrom place the vertical Portal at several positions using different directional inputs.
- Record the teleporting overhead kick and a non-attack reposition if your training tools allow it.
- Practice waiting through the portal animation, guarding the kick and moving only after the destination is visible.
- Repeat from both sides of the screen so you do not rely on a single visual orientation.
Ground Portal discipline
- Record Ground Portal beside you, in front of you and below you.
- Practice a block or movement response instead of an armor-based challenge.
- Add the rising uppercut as the recorded follow-up and confirm that your anti-air works only after the rise is visible.
- Drill a reset to neutral when you cannot identify the destination.
Orb timing
- Practice blocking or moving around an ordinary Fastball, then repeat against the charged returning version.
- Record Overflow at an upward angle and a downward angle; switch your movement lane after the first orb.
- Record Guardian and use the delay to move to open space, then stop moving into the four-orb launch.
The purpose of these drills is recognition and restraint. They do not establish frame advantage or a guaranteed punish; those properties require current testing or authoritative frame data.

What is confirmed about the character’s release
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated October 1, 2026, Executive Producer Mike Willette described Angstrom as the third DLC fighter and the 21st playable character, with an announced October 13 arrival in Season 2. The official developer diary also announced October 13. Those dates describe the launch context; balance patches or later updates can change how the moves behave, so verify live frame data and training-mode results for the version you are playing.
