To make a banner in Minecraft, craft six wool blocks of one color with one stick. To decorate it, craft a loom from two wooden planks and two strings, then place the banner, a dye, and—when needed—a banner-pattern item in the loom. Every added layer uses one dye. A water-filled cauldron can remove a single layer, while a supported bleach or reset action can return the banner to white and clear its designs.

What a Minecraft banner is used for
A banner is a tall, placeable decorative block whose base color is established when you craft it. You then build a design by applying colored layers in a loom. Because layers are applied one at a time, a banner can serve as a simple flag, a directional marker, a team color, or a detailed building accent.
The crafting table makes the blank banner. The loom is the normal design station. Keeping those jobs separate is important: a loom does not create the blank item, and a crafting table is not the reliable way to add ordinary dye layers in current versions.

Materials you need
- Six wool blocks of one matching color: mixed colors do not produce a banner.
- One stick: used in the blank-banner recipe.
- Two wooden planks and two strings: used to craft a loom. Any wood-plank type works.
- Dye: one dye is consumed for each pattern layer you apply.
- An optional pattern item: required for the special designs listed later.
Plan the base color before crafting. The base cannot be recolored through ordinary loom layers. If you later need a different base, you must make another banner or use the edition/version-specific reset method described below.
How to craft a blank banner
- Collect six wool blocks that are all the same color.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the six wool blocks in the top two rows, filling all six slots.
- Place one stick in the center slot of the bottom row.
- Move the resulting banner to your inventory.
The wool color determines the banner’s base. If even one wool block is a different color, the recipe will not complete. Crafting several identical blank banners at once is useful when you want matching flags or when you expect to revise a design.
How to craft a loom
- Open a crafting table.
- Place two strings side by side in one row.
- Place two wooden planks directly beneath them.
- Take the loom from the output slot and place it where you can use it.
The plank species does not matter for this recipe. A loom is the main station for adding banner patterns and lets you preview the selected layer before committing it.
How to design a banner in the loom
- Open the loom.
- Put the banner in the first slot.
- Put the dye for the next layer in the second slot.
- Choose a pattern from the available previews. If the design needs a special pattern item, place that item in the third slot.
- Inspect the preview, then take the finished banner from the output.
Each time you apply a layer, one dye is used. A design with four layers therefore needs four dyes, regardless of whether the layers use the same color or different colors. Apply layers in the visual order you want: later layers sit over earlier ones, so the sequence affects which parts remain visible.

It is required for ten named special patterns. The special item is not consumed when the pattern is applied, so you can reuse it on multiple banners.

The following items unlock named patterns in the loom. Availability can depend on the current game edition and version; loot and trading details should be checked in your installed version.

Six pattern items in current guides are described as craftable at a crafting table from one paper plus a specified material. Because the individual material recipes are not consistently documented across the available references, verify each recipe in the recipe book or the current Minecraft Wiki before spending rare materials.
How to plan colors and layers
Choose the base first
Start with the wool color that should dominate the finished flag. The loom can add colored shapes, but it does not provide a normal “replace base color” operation. Choosing the wrong wool color means rebuilding the banner or performing a complete reset if your edition supports one.
Budget one dye per layer
Count intended layers before you begin. A simple two-color flag may use one base plus one dye layer; a more elaborate emblem can consume many dyes. Keep spare dyes available because a preview may look different when it is placed over an earlier layer.

Use previews instead of guessing
Select a pattern, check the loom preview against the existing banner, and only then collect the output. This is safer than applying several layers blindly, especially when a later stripe or border will cover part of an earlier shape.
Record a successful sequence
For a design you plan to reproduce, write down the base wool, each dye color, and the pattern order. The game does not require a written recipe, but a short sequence prevents accidental changes when making a matching set.

- Craft or obtain a blank banner with exactly the same base color as the finished banner.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the finished banner and the matching blank banner in the crafting grid.
- Take the duplicated patterned banner from the output.
This duplication method copies the design without requiring another dye for each existing layer. The blank banner must match the original base color; a different base color will not make the intended copy. Keep the original until the duplicate is confirmed, particularly when the design uses a rare pattern item.
How to remove a banner pattern or reset a banner
Remove one layer with a water-filled cauldron
- Fill a cauldron with water.
- Use the decorated banner on the water-filled cauldron.
- Check the result and repeat only if another layer still needs to be removed.
This method removes one applied layer at a time. It is the least destructive option when the base color and most of the design are correct.

Use a bleach or reset action for a complete clear
References describe a bleach operation that strips the banner back to white and removes all patterns. Its exact item, interface, and availability are not consistent across the edition/version information available for this guide. If your game exposes that operation, treat it as a full reset: it does not preserve the base color or any existing layers. When no reset action is available, crafting a new banner is the dependable way to change the base.

Edition and version limits to check
Banner mechanics have changed over time, and published references do not agree on every Java-versus-Bedrock detail. Use the following points as checks rather than assuming that a rule from an older tutorial applies to your installation.

If a tutorial’s screenshot or recipe does not match your interface, check the edition, patch version, and whether the guide predates the loom’s introduction or later pattern additions.
Troubleshooting banner crafting
The banner recipe produces no output
- Confirm that all six wool blocks are present.
- Confirm that every wool block is the same color; mixed wool does not work.
- Confirm that the stick is in the bottom-center position.
The loom will not accept the design
- Put the banner in the first slot and the dye in the second.
- If the preview is a special named pattern, add its required item to the third slot.
- Check that the item is the exact required object, not a visually similar block or a different skull, flower, or golden-apple variant.
The finished colors look wrong
- Remember that each new layer is applied over the existing design.
- Use the loom preview before taking the output.
- If only the latest layer is wrong, wash the banner in a water-filled cauldron and rebuild that layer.
The base color is wrong
Ordinary dye layers cannot change it. Use an available full reset only if you accept losing every pattern, or craft a new banner from six wool blocks of the desired color.
A copied banner does not appear
Check that the blank banner and the finished banner share the same base color. The copy recipe depends on that match and is not a general way to transfer a design to a differently colored base.

- Choose the role: decide whether the banner is a simple marker, a repeated architectural accent, or a detailed emblem.
- Pick the base wool: select the color that should occupy the greatest area.
- Sketch the order: list the dye colors and patterns from the first layer to the last.
- Craft the loom and gather supplies: include spare dyes and any special pattern item.
- Preview every layer: commit only when the loom preview matches the intended composition.
- Make a master copy: once the design is correct, duplicate it with matching blank banners rather than rebuilding every layer.
- Keep one original: store the first successful banner as a reference for future copies.
This workflow minimizes wasted dyes and makes version differences easier to diagnose: if a pattern is missing, you can identify whether the problem is the item, the edition, or the current layer limit instead of rebuilding the entire design.
