Craft a furnace from eight cobblestone blocks in a crafting table, leaving the center slot empty. Place it, put a smeltable or cookable item in the top slot, add fuel to the bottom slot, and collect the finished item from the right slot. What a furnace does in Minecraft
The regular furnace is Minecraft’s general-purpose processing block. It converts particular input items into new outputs rather than simply storing or crafting them. Common uses include cooking raw food, smelting raw iron and raw gold into metal, turning cobblestone into stone, and making charcoal from logs.

A furnace only works when both conditions are met: the input must have a furnace recipe in your edition and version, and the fuel slot must contain a valid burnable item. Microsoft’s Bedrock recipe documentation describes a furnace recipe as an input transformed into an output and uses cobblestone becoming stone as a vanilla example. Recipe availability can differ between Java and Bedrock, and between game versions, so the in-game recipe book is the safest final check for your world.
Materials and the furnace recipe
Required material
You need eight cobblestone blocks. The recipe makes one furnace. Cobblestone can be obtained by mining stone with a suitable pickaxe; when stone is mined without the correct tool, the block may not drop as cobblestone.

Arrange the crafting-table grid
Use a crafting table’s full 3×3 grid. Fill every perimeter slot and leave the center slot empty:

Take the furnace from the result slot and move it into your inventory. The eight-cobblestone construction requirement is also documented in the standard achievement guidance.
Blackstone and deepslate alternatives
Some applicable editions or versions accept blackstone or deepslate in the same eight-block pattern. Because those alternatives are version-dependent, use the recipe book in the specific Java or Bedrock release you are playing instead of assuming that every release accepts all three block types.
Crafting and placing a furnace
- Collect at least eight cobblestone blocks, or confirm that your edition accepts blackstone or deepslate as substitutes.
- Open a crafting table. A player-inventory 2×2 grid is not large enough for this recipe.
- Place one block in each of the eight perimeter squares and leave the middle square empty.
- Move the completed furnace into your inventory.
- Choose a reachable solid location and place the furnace. Activate it to open its interface.
You can place several furnaces beside one another when you need parallel processing. Each block has its own input, fuel, progress and output state, so additional furnaces increase throughput rather than making one furnace finish an individual item faster.

Put the material you want to transform in the top slot, put fuel in the bottom slot, and wait for the progress indicator to complete. You can load multiple input items and a stack of fuel; the furnace continues with the next eligible item while both supplies remain available.

The recipe list is not identical across every version, but these are the core jobs associated with a regular furnace:

This table shows representative vanilla recipes, not a complete cross-edition recipe matrix. If an item remains in the input slot without progress, search for it in the recipe book or verify the recipe for your exact edition and version.
Processing time and fuel planning
How long one item takes
A regular furnace takes 10 seconds for each item, according to the Minecraft Wiki beginner guide crawled in 2025. That figure is a gameplay value reported by the cited guide, not an independent laboratory measurement. A batch of ten eligible items therefore takes about 100 seconds in one furnace if fuel never runs out and you do not remove the input.
Adding more fuel does not make a single item finish sooner. To shorten the real-world wait for a large batch, distribute items across multiple regular furnaces or use an appropriate specialized furnace where its recipe rules allow it.

Coal and charcoal
One coal or one charcoal smelts eight items in a regular furnace. Load a multiple of eight when practical so the burn time is used efficiently. For example, eight ore items or eight food items can consume one coal or charcoal without leaving a partially used fuel allowance for the next batch.
Wood and other burnable items
Wooden tools, planks and other burnable items have different burn durations. They are useful when you have surplus wood or no coal, but their burn time may not match your batch exactly. Choose a fuel whose burn duration covers the work you intend to do and avoid starting a tiny batch with a long-burning item if you can save that fuel for a larger load.
Fuel values and which items are accepted can vary by Java or Bedrock edition and by game version. Treat the in-game fuel behavior as authoritative for your installation, especially after an update.
What happens if you interrupt smelting
Smelting is not partially applied to an item. If you remove the input, the fuel runs out, or you break the furnace before an item finishes, the input remains unchanged. Progress pauses rather than producing a damaged or partly smelted item.

This makes a furnace safe to pause while you leave an area, provided you understand that an unloaded or unfueled furnace will not complete work in your absence. Before moving a furnace, collect the output and check the input and fuel slots so you do not leave a running batch in an unexpected location.

Step-by-step: smelt or cook an item
- Place and activate the furnace.
- Put one or more eligible raw items in the top input slot.
- Put coal, charcoal or another valid fuel in the bottom slot.
- Confirm that the flame and progress indicators begin moving. If they do not, use the troubleshooting checks below.
- Wait for each item to finish. The result appears in the output slot on the right.
- Take the output when convenient. If the output slot is full or cannot accept the next result, processing can stop until you clear room.
For a single item, one unit of an appropriate fuel may be more than enough or not enough, depending on the fuel’s burn duration. For a planned batch, count the input items first, then choose fuel that covers the whole load with as little unused burn time as practical.
Automating a furnace with hoppers
For repeated processing, hoppers can supply input and fuel automatically and remove finished output into storage. The automation tutorial cited for this setup uses one furnace, three hoppers and three chests.

- Place a chest where you want finished products stored.
- Place a hopper feeding into that chest. This is the output hopper.
- Place the furnace on top of the output hopper, so finished items can leave through the furnace’s underside.
- Place a second hopper on top of the furnace and connect it to a chest containing the raw input. Items entering from above go to the furnace’s input slot.
- Attach a third hopper to the furnace’s side and connect it to a chest containing coal, charcoal or another accepted fuel. Side-fed items go to the fuel slot.
- Fill the input and fuel chests, then verify that items move into the correct furnace slots and that finished results arrive in the output chest.
When placing a hopper, aim at the destination block before attaching it; the hopper’s narrow outlet indicates where items will be sent. A misdirected hopper can send fuel into storage, send raw material into the wrong inventory, or fail to extract output.
When automation is worth building
A hopper system is useful for long, repetitive batches such as large quantities of stone, metal or cooked food. It does not change the regular furnace’s per-item processing time. Its benefit is hands-off loading and unloading, allowing you to mine, build or prepare another batch while the furnace works.

A smoker or blast furnace cannot replace the regular furnace for every recipe. Keep a regular furnace available for jobs outside the smoker’s food category or the blast furnace’s ore-and-nugget category. The cited automation guidance establishes the specialization and speed distinction but does not provide a complete cross-edition fuel-consumption matrix, so check your game version before designing a fuel budget around a specialized block.
Why a furnace is not smelting: troubleshooting
The input stays in the top slot
- Check that the item has a furnace recipe in your edition and version. Use the recipe book rather than assuming a recipe from another release.
- Confirm that you placed the item in the top input slot, not the fuel slot or output area.
- If you are using a smoker or blast furnace, move the item to a regular furnace when its recipe falls outside the specialized block’s category.
The flame never appears
- Put a valid fuel in the bottom slot. A non-burnable item will remain there and provide no heat.
- Check that the fuel has not been exhausted. When it runs out, progress pauses and the input remains unchanged.
- For hopper-fed systems, inspect the fuel chest, the side hopper’s direction and the furnace’s bottom fuel slot.
The furnace stops partway through a batch
- Look at the fuel slot first; the batch may require more burn time than you supplied.
- Check the output slot. If it is full or cannot accept the result, clear the completed items.
- In an automated setup, make sure the input hopper still has raw items and that the output hopper is connected to a chest with room.
The furnace appears to lose progress
Removing the input, running out of fuel or breaking the furnace pauses the operation rather than partially transforming the item. Return the input and a valid fuel, then allow the item to complete without removing it.
Hoppers put items in the wrong place
Hoppers send items in the direction of their outlet. Recheck each connection: the top hopper should feed the furnace’s input, the side hopper should feed fuel, and the bottom hopper should extract output into its chest. Replace a hopper while aiming at the intended destination if its outlet points elsewhere.
Edition and version checks
Java and Bedrock do not always expose exactly the same recipe availability or fuel behavior, and updates can change which blocks or items are accepted. The Microsoft recipe documentation cited for the furnace is Bedrock-specific, while the timing and beginner guidance are general gameplay references. Do not treat a Bedrock recipe page as proof that every Java release behaves identically.
Before committing rare materials to a large batch, open the recipe book in your world and identify the edition and version shown on your title screen or launcher. If a recipe is absent, test the item in the correct furnace type rather than forcing it into a regular furnace. This simple check prevents most cross-version surprises.

A practical furnace workflow
- Decide whether the job is general smelting, food cooking or ore-and-nugget processing.
- Choose a regular furnace for general work, a smoker for eligible food recipes, or a blast furnace for eligible ores and nuggets.
- Count the input items and select fuel that matches the batch. Eight items pair neatly with one coal or charcoal in a regular furnace.
- Load the input and fuel slots, then verify that the progress indicator starts.
- Keep the output slot clear for the next result.
- For recurring work, add hopper-fed input, fuel and output storage using one furnace, three hoppers and three chests.
- Use the in-game recipe book whenever your edition or version is uncertain.
With those checks, a furnace becomes a predictable production block: the regular model handles broad smelting and cooking, specialized models accelerate their narrower categories, and hoppers remove the repetitive loading and unloading.
