A respawn anchor is Minecraft’s Nether-only alternative to a bed. Craft it with six crying obsidian and three glowstone, place it in the Nether, then use glowstone on the block to add charges. Interact with a charged anchor to set your Nether spawn; each respawn spends one charge, and the anchor holds four charges at most.

The same basic mechanic applies in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The critical safety rule is dimension: activating a respawn anchor in the Overworld or the End causes an explosion, so use beds for ordinary Overworld respawning and reserve anchors for Nether bases and expeditions.

What a respawn anchor does
A respawn anchor records a player’s spawn location in the Nether. It solves a specific problem: beds cannot safely be used in the Nether, while an anchor lets you return to a prepared Nether location after death instead of appearing at your Overworld spawn.
An anchor is not permanently charged. Glowstone supplies a limited number of respawns, and the block can hold up to four charges simultaneously. Every successful respawn at that anchor removes one charge. Once the supply is empty, it is no longer a usable charged spawn point until you add more glowstone.

Think of it as a rechargeable checkpoint rather than a bed replacement everywhere. It is excellent for a long Nether trip, a fortress project or a portal hub, but it requires a continuing supply of glowstone and a protected room around the spawn location.
Materials and how to obtain them

Crying obsidian
Locate crying obsidian in Nether structures and ruined portals, or trade gold with piglins for a chance to receive it. The official Minecraft guidance specifies a diamond or netherite pickaxe for mining it. A weaker pickaxe will not provide the block, so bring the correct tool before beginning a collection trip.
Glowstone
Glowstone is a Nether resource used twice in this process: three blocks are part of the recipe, and each later use on the anchor adds one charge. If you intend to fill a newly crafted anchor completely, reserve four more glowstone blocks beyond the three used for crafting. Carry extra when the anchor will support repeated deaths or a large group.
Crafting the respawn anchor
Use a crafting table and place the ingredients in this exact pattern:

Take the resulting respawn anchor from the output slot. A misplaced material, an empty slot or regular obsidian in place of crying obsidian will prevent the recipe from appearing. The recipe creates one anchor.

Crafting checklist
- Collect six crying obsidian blocks.
- Collect three glowstone blocks for the recipe, plus any extra glowstone you want to spend on charges.
- Open a crafting table.
- Fill the top and bottom rows with crying obsidian.
- Fill the middle row with glowstone.
- Move the respawn anchor into your inventory.

- Place the respawn anchor on a solid, accessible surface.
- Hold a glowstone block in your hand.
- Use the glowstone on the anchor. Each use adds one charge.
- Repeat until the desired charge level is reached, stopping at the four-charge maximum.
There is no benefit to trying to add a fifth charge; the anchor cannot store more than four. Keep spare glowstone in a nearby chest, ender chest or expedition kit because every respawn will reduce the stored total.
How much glowstone is needed?
The recipe consumes three glowstone blocks. Filling the newly placed anchor to capacity consumes up to four additional blocks, one per charge. A completely crafted and fully charged anchor therefore represents seven glowstone blocks in total, although only three are needed to produce the block itself. Later refills require one glowstone for each missing charge.
Setting your Nether spawn
After the anchor has at least one charge, use the anchor once while standing in the Nether. The interaction sets that location as your spawn point. You do not need to spend a separate item for the setting action; the charge is consumed when you actually respawn there after dying.
Set the point only after checking the surrounding area. A respawn location beside lava, a ledge or hostile mobs can turn a successful return into a second death. Build a small enclosure with a roof, light it, and leave enough room for the player to stand safely when arriving. Keep the anchor accessible from inside the shelter so you can recharge it without stepping into danger.

A practical Nether checkpoint layout
- Put the anchor inside a sealed room connected to your portal or main tunnel.
- Use nonflammable blocks and a door or other barrier to reduce ghast and mob exposure.
- Make the floor level and leave clear space around the anchor.
- Store spare glowstone and emergency building blocks nearby.
- Mark the location with signs or coordinates so teammates can find it.
These construction choices are not requirements for the mechanic, but they address the main risk of using a fixed Nether spawn: arriving at the correct place does not make an unsafe place safe.
What happens when you die
If the anchor remains a valid charged spawn point, the game returns you there after death and consumes one charge. The remaining charges can be used by you or other players who have set that anchor as their spawn, so a shared base should maintain a larger glowstone reserve.
When no charge remains, the anchor cannot serve as a charged respawn location. The game then follows its normal fallback spawn behavior rather than treating the empty anchor as available. Recharge the block before the next dangerous trip instead of waiting until the last charge has been spent.
Managing charges on expeditions
- Start a trip with the anchor full when you expect combat, exploration or repeated portal travel.
- Carry enough glowstone to replace the charges you realistically might use.
- Tell teammates when the anchor is low so one player does not unknowingly consume the final charge.
- After a death, recharge the anchor as soon as the area is secure.
- For separate projects, use separate anchors rather than relying on a distant checkpoint.
Dimension safety: why anchors explode
A respawn anchor is designed for the Nether. Activating it in the Overworld or the End triggers an explosion instead of setting a spawn. This is the anchor’s most important failure mode and the reason you should not test an unfamiliar block beside your base, storage room or portal in another dimension.

Leave an anchor in the Nether and use a bed for Overworld respawning. Beds have the opposite limitation: they are the ordinary Overworld spawn tool, but attempting to sleep in the Nether or End also causes an explosion. The two blocks are deliberately specialized for different dimensions.

Preventing an accidental explosion
- Check the dimension indicator and surroundings before interacting with the block.
- Do not place an anchor in an Overworld test area just to see what it does.
- Use a bed in the Overworld and move the anchor through a portal only when you are ready to deploy it in the Nether.
- If you maintain multiple bases, label containers and rooms clearly so the two spawn systems are not confused.
Complete setup procedure
Use this sequence when establishing a new Nether checkpoint:
- Gather the six crying obsidian and three recipe glowstone.
- Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe if you still need to mine crying obsidian.
- Craft the anchor in the pattern shown above.
- Transport it to the Nether with spare glowstone.
- Build or select a protected room away from lava, open drops and exposed corridors.
- Place the anchor and charge it with glowstone.
- Use the charged anchor once to set your spawn.
- Record the coordinates and inform anyone sharing the base.
- After each death, check the remaining charge and refill the block before continuing.
Troubleshooting common problems
The recipe does not appear
Check that the six dark blocks are crying obsidian, not regular obsidian, and that all three glowstone slots are filled. The arrangement must match the three-row pattern: crying obsidian on the top and bottom, glowstone across the middle. If you are mining crying obsidian, verify that the tool is diamond or netherite.
The anchor will not set my spawn
Confirm that you are in the Nether and that at least one charge is stored. An empty anchor cannot set a spawn. Hold no conflicting interaction target, aim at the anchor and use it again once those two conditions are met.
The anchor exploded
You activated it outside the Nether, most commonly in the Overworld or End. Do not repeat the interaction in that dimension. Rebuild the checkpoint in the Nether and use a bed for the Overworld instead.
I respawned somewhere else
The anchor may have had no charges left, or the game may no longer have been able to use that checkpoint. Return to the Nether location, inspect the anchor and recharge it. If the block is gone or the area is no longer available, establish a new charged anchor and set it again.

I ran out of charges too quickly
Each return consumes exactly one charge, so a four-charge anchor can support only four respawns before it needs glowstone. Treat the capacity as a visible expedition budget, carry replacement glowstone and refill after dangerous encounters rather than assuming the block is permanent.
Java and Bedrock Edition behavior
Mojang’s Java Edition Nether release notes and Bedrock Nether Update notes describe the same essential operation: glowstone charges the anchor, the maximum is four, and a respawn uses one charge. Interface prompts and control bindings can differ by platform, but the resource requirements, Nether spawn purpose and wrong-dimension danger are the same.
When explaining the mechanic to a multiplayer group, give platform-specific instructions for the interaction button if necessary, but do not change the underlying checklist. The important checks remain dimension, charge availability and a safe arrival room.
When a respawn anchor is worth carrying
Use one when the cost of returning to the Overworld is greater than the cost of glowstone. Netherite mining, fortress searches, bastion runs and long tunnel projects all benefit from a local checkpoint. The anchor is less useful for a short, low-risk visit where a portal and an Overworld bed are already close.
Its trade-off is straightforward: it removes the distance penalty after death but introduces a consumable resource and a dimension-specific hazard. A well-supplied, protected anchor turns a remote Nether operation into a repeatable route; an uncharged anchor in an exposed room provides little protection and can leave you at the wrong spawn after one or two failures.
