To craft six hanging signs in Minecraft 1.20, put two chains in the top-left and top-right slots of a crafting grid, then fill the bottom row with six stripped logs of the same wood type. Place a sign with support from above or the side, then interact with it to add text.
Hanging sign recipe in Minecraft 1.20
The recipe is two chains and six stripped logs of one preferred wood type, and it yields six hanging signs. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes describe them as “Crafted with 2 chains and 6 stripped logs of your preferred wood type” (Java Edition 1.20 release notes).

- Open a crafting grid.
- Place one chain in the top-left slot and another in the top-right slot.
- Fill all three slots in the bottom row with stripped logs of the same wood type.
- Collect the six hanging signs from the result slot.
To make the ingredients, use an axe on a log to strip it, and craft chains from iron ingots and nuggets. Minecraft’s guide lists oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, mangrove, cherry, dark oak, crimson, warped, and bamboo as wood choices; that list is from its March 15, 2024 guide and should not be read as a guarantee about every later game update (Minecraft guide to hanging signs).
Where and how to place a hanging sign
A hanging sign must attach to something; it cannot stand on the ground without support. The 1.20 release notes describe three placement arrangements:

- Hang it beneath a supporting block, such as a full block or fence.
- Attach it to the solid side of a block.
- Attach it to the side or underside of another hanging sign.
When attached beneath a block, it hangs from chains. When attached to a block’s side, it uses a small bracket, as shown in Minecraft’s guide. Java Edition’s notes also say a sign with a horizontal bar does not pop off when its supporting block is removed. Placement details are documented in the Java 1.20 notes and Bedrock 1.20.0 notes.
Add and edit hanging sign text
Interact with a placed sign to enter or edit its text. The front and back are separate faces, so each can display different text and use a different text color. To change the back, move around to that side and interact with it. Hanging signs have less writing space than ordinary signs; Minecraft’s guide does not give a numerical character limit.

You can use dye to change the text color or a glow ink sac to make the text glow. In Bedrock 1.20.0, ink sacs, glow ink sacs, and dyes cannot be applied while the sign’s text is empty, so enter text first (Bedrock 1.20.0 release notes; Minecraft guide).
Wax a sign to lock its text
Use honeycomb on a hanging sign to wax it. Waxing prevents further text edits, so do it only after the wording and colors are set. This editing behavior is described in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 notes and Bedrock 1.20.0 notes.

Hanging signs versus ordinary signs
Hanging signs are a placement and display option, not a gameplay upgrade. They need side or overhead support, and Minecraft’s guide notes that they offer less text space than ordinary signs. The official 1.20 notes characterize them as a more expensive version of regular signs; choose one for its appearance and placement rather than expecting extra functionality.
The recipe and behavior here are specifically grounded in Minecraft Java Edition 1.20 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.0, both released June 7, 2023. Later versions may change details, so check the notes for your edition if a recipe or placement option differs.
