To create a 24/7 birdsong stream with changing dawn and dusk visuals, run a continuous encoder feed to YouTube, use looping birdsong in OBS, and schedule OBS to switch between separate Dawn and Dusk scenes. Before going live, verify your channel, clear the rights to every audio and visual asset, test transitions and restarts, and plan a separate recording archive: YouTube may not capture a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Choose how to keep the YouTube stream running
You need a continuous audio/video feed and an encoder or cloud service to send it to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software. A local OBS setup gives you direct control over scenes and scheduling, but the computer and connection must remain available. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; that listing is not a reliability guarantee or a price comparison. StreamNeo is another YouTube-only cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your stream key, and go live; it keeps the uploaded video looping without a computer running at home.
Prepare your channel and creative assets
Check live-stream access
Confirm that your YouTube channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. First-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enablement until the day you intend to launch. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers setup and stream creation: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Clear rights to the sound and visuals
Use birdsong recordings, photographs, and video that you have created or are licensed to use for the planned YouTube stream, duration, territory, and monetization. A recording being available online does not establish permission. YouTube says copyright matches or strikes can affect livestreaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and its copyright guidance before broadcasting.

Decide what should change and what should stay continuous
Make two OBS scenes, Dawn and Dusk, with the appropriate still or video visual in each. Put the birdsong in a looping Media Source, or use a looping VLC Video playlist if you need multiple files; VLC must be installed to use that source. Keep the audio arrangement simple and test it through scene changes, because separate sources do not automatically guarantee perfectly continuous or synchronized sound.
Build and test the OBS scenes
- Set a consistent video canvas and output format. Choose a resolution and frame rate suited to your source material and connection, and use the same output settings throughout the stream. The cited YouTube and OBS material does not establish one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every setup; follow the current guidance shown in YouTube Studio for your chosen format rather than guessing.
- Create the scenes. In OBS, add a scene named Dawn and another named Dusk. Add each scene’s visual as an Image or Media Source. Use a consistent canvas so switching does not unexpectedly resize or expose blank areas.
- Add the birdsong loop. In the appropriate scene, add a Media Source, select the audio/video file, and enable looping. If using a VLC Video source for a playlist, enable playlist looping and confirm VLC is installed. Decide whether to keep one audio source active across both scenes or duplicate/configure it in each scene; test for silence, overlaps, clicks, and level changes at transitions.
- Choose transitions. OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions. Select the transition that suits the visual change, then preview each direction to ensure it does not reveal an empty frame or interrupt the intended composition.
- Test unattended behavior. Run the scenes and loop long enough to check for audio gaps, black frames, media-source reloads, and unexpected stops. Restart OBS and the computer during a test to confirm what does and does not resume automatically.
OBS documents scenes, sources, and transitions in its Quick Start Guide. For a free interactive checklist before building, see the copyright safety checklist.

Schedule the dawn and dusk scene changes
OBS Advanced Scene Switcher has a Macro Schedule feature for running macro actions at a specified date and time. Use it to trigger a macro that changes the active scene. The exact times depend on your chosen location, time zone, and creative window; there is no universal dawn or dusk schedule.
- Install and open OBS Advanced Scene Switcher, then locate its Macro Schedule tab.
- Create a macro action that switches the active scene to Dawn, and a separate action that switches it to Dusk.
- Set the schedule dates and times using the intended local time zone. If you want seasonal sunrise and sunset changes, revise the schedule when needed; the scheduling feature does not determine those times for you.
- Test both transitions in a private or unlisted broadcast. Check the actual YouTube preview and watch page, not only the OBS preview.
- Restart OBS and test again to establish whether the schedule and macros are enabled and resume as intended after a restart.
Advanced Scene Switcher’s update information describes the Macro Schedule feature; it does not prescribe sunrise/sunset timings. See the Advanced Scene Switcher updates for feature details.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose its visibility: public, private, or unlisted. Scheduling can make an upcoming stream visible to subscribers.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public documents, or a stream output.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. Verify the audio, visuals, and selected scene before making a public stream live.
- Check the public watch page on a phone and another device, and confirm that the feed remains audible and visible there.
YouTube’s live control room guidance covers stream settings and monitoring. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveBroadcast (the watchable event and video) from a liveStream (the transmitted audio/video settings). API-based recurring or separate scheduled events are optional and add implementation complexity; the API documentation was last updated 2026-09-14: YouTube Live Streaming API.
Plan for monitoring and recordings
Keep an eye on the YouTube watch page, stream health, and the actual sound and picture during operation. YouTube’s event guidance recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; these are event-preparation recommendations, not guarantees for a 24/7 deployment. It also recommends checking the preview, local archive files, channel/watch-page access, and mobile playback. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Do not rely on YouTube to save an uninterrupted 24-hour replay. YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Its archive guidance warns that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends a local recording backup. If preserving a replay matters, plan and test local recording separately from the live output: Archive live streams.

- Live streaming is unavailable: verify channel eligibility and activation status; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and a restriction in the prior 90 days can affect access.
- The stream never appears in YouTube preview: check that OBS is using the correct stream URL and key, that streaming has started, and that the key has not been changed or copied incorrectly. Regenerate a compromised key rather than sharing it.
- Audio drops or clicks when the scene changes: review which scene owns the birdsong source, whether duplicated sources overlap or restart, and whether the media file loops cleanly. Test transitions in a private or unlisted stream.
- The picture goes black or exposes empty space: confirm that both scenes have active visual sources, that their dimensions fit the canvas, and that media files reload after restart.
- Dawn or dusk switch happens at the wrong time: check the Macro Schedule time zone, dates, and configured times, then test both actions after restarting OBS.
- A replay is missing: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Use a tested local recording plan if a complete replay is important.
- Copyright action affects the stream: confirm that each asset’s license covers the use and address any YouTube match or restriction before restarting the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream built from uploaded video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo offers a cloud route: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video runs at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, and the same plan includes 24/7 looping, playlists, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, and support. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is a prerecorded-video option, not a camera feed. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
