For a YouTube-only 24/7 Indian music stream, use FFmpeg to send your programme to YouTube Live over RTMPS. Shaka Player is not part of that broadcast path: it is an optional player for a separate website that serves a DASH or HLS stream. Before going live, prepare a continuous music programme, meet YouTube’s channel requirements, configure and test the encoder, and confirm you have the rights to use every recording and composition.
Choose the right streaming architecture
There are two separate jobs that are easy to confuse: getting a live feed to YouTube, and playing a stream on a website you operate. FFmpeg handles the first job by reading media and writing an output stream. YouTube Live ingests that output. Shaka Player handles website playback of a DASH or HLS stream; it does not send media to YouTube, and YouTube viewers do not need Shaka.

Shaka’s project documentation lists live DASH and HLS support, but Shaka is only relevant to the second setup. Its FAQ discusses clock synchronization and the possibility that encoder drift needs correction at the encoder: Shaka Player documentation and Shaka Player FAQ.
Clear the channel and music rights before setup
Check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel and activate live streaming well before the planned launch in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

Confirm rights for the repertoire
Do not treat a song’s availability online, a credit line, or a single general permission as proof that a 24/7 stream is cleared. Confirm rights for both the musical compositions and the specific sound recordings, for the territories where the stream will be available and for the planned continuous live use. The required permissions depend on the repertoire and rights holders; confirm them with those rights holders or qualified counsel rather than assuming one India-wide licence covers everything.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even licensed content can be interrupted unless the rights owner allowlists the channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare a continuous music programme
Make the material you intend to broadcast into a video programme that FFmpeg can read. For a first setup, a single, tested programme file is simpler to operate than a playlist assembled from many files on the fly. If you want a sequence of devotional, classical, film, folk, or independent tracks, assemble and review that sequence before sending it to YouTube. Check that the picture and audio remain present throughout, transitions are intentional, and the file plays to completion without errors.
- Keep a copy of the source programme and note its video resolution, frame rate, audio format, and duration.
- Use a stable visual—such as artwork you have permission to use or a designed channel slate—if the programme is primarily music. Confirm that all visual material is cleared as well.
- For music-only programming, ensure the output still has a valid video track; YouTube Live is receiving a video stream, not an audio-only playlist.
- Decide how the programme will continue after it reaches the end. The FFmpeg example below loops one file; it does not automatically create a gapless, curated playlist from unrelated tracks.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream in Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Use the RTMPS server URL where YouTube provides it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; Google’s developer guide describes a valid RTMPS ingest endpoint on port 443. Follow the server URL shown in Studio rather than guessing an endpoint: YouTube’s encoder setup guide, encoder settings guidance, and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your live event. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, source repository, or article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Keep the server URL and key out of the command history where possible. The example below uses an environment variable for the complete output target; set it privately to the correct RTMPS output target for your Studio event, including the key in the format expected by YouTube.
Configure FFmpeg to loop and send the programme
FFmpeg reads an input and writes an output; the command below is a starting pattern for one local programme file, not a tested end-to-end setup. It loops the file, encodes video at a constant target bitrate, uses AAC audio, and forces keyframes at two-second intervals. Set the bitrate and other values to fit the current YouTube recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations call for CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate. Consult its current resolution and bitrate recommendations rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different format.

If FFmpeg reports that the `libx264` encoder is unavailable, use an FFmpeg build with that encoder or choose an encoder available in your build and verify its output settings. If your source is not an MP4 or has no audio/video stream in the expected form, adjust the input and encoding options rather than assuming this command will fit it unchanged.
Match the output to the programme and connection
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your source can sustain, then use YouTube’s current bitrate recommendation for that exact output. Do not upscale low-resolution artwork or a low-resolution source merely to select a larger output format.
- Set the video bitrate as constant bitrate using the same target for
-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrate. Set the buffer appropriately for that bitrate; do not leave the instructional placeholder unchanged. - The forced-keyframe expression requests a keyframe every two seconds. YouTube’s published recommendation is two seconds and not more than four seconds.
- The command encodes audio as AAC. Choose an audio bitrate that meets YouTube’s current recommendations and suits the source; re-encoding cannot restore quality missing from the recording.
- Plan for upload capacity above the selected stream bitrate, with headroom for network variation. YouTube says the connection must have adequate upload capacity for the chosen bitrate; a short test is more useful than assuming a speed-test result guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
Start with a real-time test
- Run the encoder with a short test programme and watch the preview in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing with content that has similar audio and motion to the intended stream.
- Check that the preview is moving, audio is audible and synchronized, and Live Control Room reports healthy reception before making the stream public.
- Once the preview and stream health are satisfactory, use the Live Control Room controls required by the selected event workflow to start the public broadcast. The encoder sends the feed; the YouTube event controls determine when viewers can watch.
- Monitor the event and encoder rather than treating a successful preview as proof that a long-running stream will remain healthy.
Plan for continuity instead of assuming “24/7” is automatic
A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a guarantee that one encoder process or one YouTube event will run forever. The computer or server running FFmpeg, its power, network, storage, and the process itself can fail. Arrange monitoring and a way to restart the encoder and recover the broadcast after an interruption. Test that recovery process before depending on it.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not infer that a single live event can run indefinitely or that its archive behavior is the same for longer streams. Plan how you will handle event duration and archives in YouTube Studio: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
A software encoder such as FFmpeg offers scriptable control but makes you responsible for the machine, process, network, and recovery. A hardware encoder may suit a team that already owns and can operate suitable equipment, but the requirements and automation depend on the particular device. The available evidence does not establish a universally best encoder product. A VPS is one possible place to operate a self-managed encoder, not a requirement.
