First determine whether OBS stops streaming or only its captured picture freezes. Closing an RDP window, disconnecting the session, signing out, and restarting the server can leave different session states, and there is no documented Hetzner setting that guarantees an OBS desktop capture will persist after RDP closes. Run a short, private or unlisted test: disconnect without signing out, then check the actual YouTube video and audio from another device. The right fix depends on your Hetzner server type and OBS sources.
Diagnose what fails when RDP closes
Do not rely only on OBS’s stream timer or YouTube’s live indicator. OBS may remain connected to YouTube while a display, window, or browser capture has frozen or changed. Conversely, OBS itself may stop, or the stream may suffer network-related dropped frames. These are different faults and need different fixes.
Run a controlled test
- Make a short test using the same OBS scene, profile, stream key, and sources you intend to use. Use a private or unlisted YouTube stream, or another safe test arrangement.
- Start streaming and confirm that both picture and audio are correct at YouTube from a separate device.
- Close the RDP client or explicitly disconnect, but do not sign out or restart the server during this test.
- Continue watching from the separate device. Check the picture and audio, not just whether OBS appears to be live.
- Reconnect and note whether OBS stopped, a particular source froze or changed, or the video remained correct but became choppy.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes and explains how desktop, window, game, and video sources and audio devices are configured. The test identifies which part of your setup needs attention; it does not establish that every RDP or Hetzner configuration behaves the same way.
Identify your sources
List each source in the active OBS scene. Browser, display, and window captures can depend on the interactive desktop and its display path. A media source or another direct input has different dependencies. When the symptom is a frozen picture, check each source’s actual output after disconnecting RDP rather than assuming the whole OBS scene has failed.

Identify the Hetzner host
Establish whether you are using a cloud VM or a physical dedicated server, which Windows installation and session arrangement it uses, and whether a usable display or GPU path is present. Hetzner’s Windows Server 2025 documentation describes RDP access for its dedicated-server Windows add-on. Its separate Windows on Cloud guide covers licensing and architecture constraints for customer-installed Windows; the configuration available to you depends on your account and current offering.
Choose a fix based on the symptom
OBS stops or the stream ends
If OBS itself exits or YouTube loses the stream when the remote session changes, investigate how the Windows session is being disconnected, your session policy, and how OBS is launched. Do not sign out as a workaround when the goal is to keep an interactive application running: signing out is a different operation from merely closing the RDP client, and the test should establish what your host does.

For launch automation, OBS supports command-line parameters including --startstreaming, --scene, --profile, and --collection. For example, the documented launch option --startstreaming starts streaming automatically when OBS launches, provided the selected setup is configured for that purpose. On Windows, when using a scheduled task or other automation, OBS’s Launch Parameters guide says to set the task’s “Start in…” directory to the folder containing obs64.exe.
These options control OBS startup and selection; they do not guarantee that Windows keeps an RDP-dependent desktop available, that capture remains intact, or that the network connection stays healthy. Test automated launch and capture separately.

OBS stays live but the picture freezes or changes
Treat this as a capture/display-path problem first, not a YouTube ingest problem. Verify whether the affected source is a browser, window, or display capture and whether another source in the same scene continues to work. Then evaluate the session and display architecture for the specific VM or dedicated server you have.
An OBS forum discussion includes a user’s report of browser-window capture freezing when RDP disconnected, with a respondent attributing it to the RDP virtual GPU and suggesting an alternate mirroring arrangement on a physical GPU computer. That is community experience, not an official Windows rule or a universal Hetzner fix. Do not assume that VNC, another remote-control program, or a display accessory will solve the problem on your host without testing compatibility.

Video is correct but frames drop or the connection disconnects
Investigate the connection between the server and YouTube’s ingest server. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the selected bitrate; excessive drops can disconnect the stream. This is distinct from a frozen capture source. Check network stability and whether the connection can sustain your bitrate before changing the capture setup.

OBS WebSocket is for control, not display persistence
OBS WebSocket can let an external client control OBS. It is built into OBS Studio 28 and later, according to the OBS Remote Control Guide. OBS recommends enabling authentication and setting a password. WebSocket control can help operate OBS remotely, but it does not by itself keep a Windows desktop source alive after an RDP display or session transition.

Hetzner’s VNC console is not a documented OBS session fix
Hetzner’s Using the console page describes provider console access, and its Cloud FAQ characterizes the console as intended for emergencies and recommends SSH for routine management. Neither source promises continuity for an OBS graphical session. Do not treat provider-console access as proof that your Windows interactive desktop or capture sources will persist.
Validate any alternative streaming architecture
If your content is a video file or can be produced without capturing the desktop, a direct media pipeline may avoid dependence on an interactive desktop. Before switching, verify that the chosen method handles your actual media, overlays, audio, and YouTube ingest workflow. A headless pipeline is not automatically equivalent to your OBS scene.
Hetzner’s Owncast guide describes running an Owncast destination that receives OBS or other RTMP sources. Owncast is a separate streaming destination, not evidence of a direct YouTube solution for this problem.
Troubleshooting checklist
- OBS timer continues, picture freezes: inspect the specific desktop, window, or browser source and the display/session path.
- OBS exits or YouTube goes offline: investigate session behavior and OBS startup automation; do not confuse automatic app launch with capture continuity.
- Picture works, but dropped frames appear: troubleshoot bitrate and network stability between the host and YouTube ingest.
- Only audio fails: verify the selected audio source and whether it remains available after the session transition.
- Provider console appears available: verify its actual relationship to the Windows desktop; Hetzner does not document it as an OBS persistence guarantee.
- Changing remote-access software is proposed: test against your actual cloud or dedicated host, display/GPU path, and capture source rather than treating a community anecdote as a universal remedy.
