To create a 24/7 YouTube radio stream with visuals, prepare music and images you have the rights to use, send them together through a live encoder, and connect that encoder to YouTube Live with your stream URL and key. Test the full feed before going public, then plan for interruptions, monitoring, copyright checks, and YouTube’s archive limits. A continuous channel is possible, but a single broadcast lasting more than 12 hours may not be archived and may have limited or unavailable DVR rewind.
What you need before starting
A YouTube Live radio stream is an audio-and-video broadcast sent to YouTube by an encoder. The audio can be music or other radio programming; the visual can be a still image, animated scene, or other material you are allowed to use. A software encoder is sufficient for many setups, while dedicated encoding hardware is an optional route.
- A channel eligible to stream: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Its live-streaming guidance also says creators must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Cleared audio and visuals: You need the rights required for live use, and potentially for any replay or archive you want to keep.
- An encoder and stable upload connection: The encoder sends your program to YouTube. Your connection must sustain its outgoing bitrate throughout the broadcast.
- A continuity plan: Decide who will monitor the stream and what to do if the computer, encoder, network, power, or source media stops.
Prepare the radio program and visuals
Choose music you can broadcast
Do not assume music available through a consumer listening app, or labeled “royalty-free,” is automatically cleared for a YouTube livestream. YouTube’s Live Streaming Terms and Conditions put responsibility on the broadcaster to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Confirm that the license covers livestreaming, the territories where the stream will be available, monetization if applicable, and any archive or replay you plan to retain.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream may be interrupted or terminated when a match is detected. Even music you have licensed may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the allowlisting process with the rights holder before relying on that music. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare the visual feed
Choose a visual that can run for the duration of the program and that you are permitted to use. It might be a still image, a moving background, or an animated scene. Add it as a source in your encoder and make sure the output includes both that visual and the audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes software and hardware workflows, including overlays; exact controls for arranging or looping sources depend on the encoder you choose.
Use visuals you own or have permission to broadcast. A video game image, artwork, or logo can have separate rights from the music, so check those permissions rather than assuming that adding a visual makes the stream safe to use.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one. Choose the title, audience and visibility settings that suit the broadcast.
- Get the connection details. In the encoder setup for the event, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains this sequence in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Enter the details in your encoder. Paste the stream URL and key into its YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields, then select the prepared audio and visual sources.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, share it casually, or expose it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and sound. Follow the Live Control Room’s go-live workflow to start the event.
Choose stable video and audio settings
There is no single best bitrate for every channel. YouTube recommends checking upload bandwidth and testing the actual audio and movement you plan to stream. For H.264, its recommended examples include the following values:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted delivery or universal settings for every codec and connection. Choose an output your sustained upload can support, leaving room for normal network variation. YouTube recommends constant bitrate, an approximately 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Consult its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance. YouTube transcodes live output for viewers on different devices and connections.

Test the full broadcast before relying on it
- Run a private or unlisted test using the same encoder, music, visuals, resolution, and bitrate planned for the public stream.
- Check the YouTube preview for the correct picture and audio. Listen for gaps, distortion, or clipping; look for frozen visuals and dropped frames.
- Confirm that the outgoing connection remains stable during representative movement and sound, not just while the feed is idle.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and messages, and keep monitoring once the stream is public.
- If you need an archive, make a separate local recording and verify that the file is intact. YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise monitoring audio and video quality and checking local archive files.
Plan continuity, archives, and DVR
A 24/7 channel is an operational commitment, not just a long encoder session. Plan for the computer or hardware encoder, power, storage, network, and audio source to remain available, and arrange for a person to monitor and recover the broadcast when something fails. YouTube does not guarantee that your encoder or channel will remain uninterrupted.
Do not promise viewers a complete replay of one very long event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance. If a reliable replay matters, keep a separate recording and consider shorter scheduled events. Check current Studio behavior before choosing a restart schedule; there is no universally established cadence that guarantees a particular archive or audience result.
