You can use a spare PC as a dedicated YouTube encoder: install OBS Studio, capture the game and audio, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, then test the stream before leaving it running. This works for live gameplay that the PC can keep producing; looping prerecorded gameplay is a different setup with separate rights and archiving considerations.
Before you set up the spare PC
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility.
- The PC must be able to run the game or other video source and encode the stream at the same time. A machine that can play a game smoothly may still struggle when it must render, composite, and encode video simultaneously.
- Use a stable upload connection with enough headroom for the chosen bitrate. A nominally fast connection does not guarantee a reliable path to YouTube’s ingest server.
- Decide whether you need live gameplay or continuous playback of prerecorded footage. Live gameplay requires an active source; prerecorded loops do not show current play and require you to have the necessary rights to the footage, game audio, and music.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

Enable live streaming
In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream setup and complete any channel verification or activation prompts. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation before troubleshooting OBS.

Install OBS Studio and run its setup wizard
Open OBS and use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. The wizard takes your intended use, hardware, and network conditions into account when suggesting a starting configuration; treat it as a baseline rather than a guarantee that the spare PC can sustain a particular quality.

Add the video and audio sources
In the Sources panel, add the source that matches your setup: a game capture source for a game running on this PC, a window or display capture source for other PC content, or a media source for a file. Add the audio sources you need, such as game audio and microphone input. Watch the audio meters while producing sound, and check the preview for motion, cropping, and unintended desktop content.

Create a YouTube stream and copy its connection details
In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings, using YouTube as the service. YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address the encoder uses to send video. Keep it private: anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to your stream.

Choose a sustainable output
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, and select RTMPS where available. Test the upload connection and begin with settings the PC and network can sustain. OBS notes that the load depends on encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; there is no single bitrate or output profile that is safe for every spare PC and connection. If you see rendering or encoding warnings, lower the game load, frame rate, scene complexity, or output resolution before raising quality.

Start a short test before the real stream
Start the stream and inspect the YouTube preview and stream health. Confirm that viewers can open the watch page, the picture moves as expected, and the audio is clear and balanced. If you plan to keep a local recording, confirm that the file appears and continues growing. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring audio, video, and accessibility.
Keep the stream dependable over long sessions
Leave room for the encoder and game
OBS may struggle even when the game itself appears playable, because gameplay, scene compositing, and video encoding compete for system resources. If OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble, reduce game settings or frame rate, simplify scenes and overlays, or lower the stream’s resolution or frame rate. A supported hardware encoder can reduce CPU work, but older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than other options.

Distinguish network drops from PC overload
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections generally point to a connection problem between the PC and YouTube’s ingest server. Check whether the upload connection is stable, whether other devices are using it heavily, and whether your configured bitrate is sustainable. Lowering bitrate may help if the connection cannot consistently carry the current output. Encoding or rendering warnings instead call for reducing the PC’s workload.
Plan for interruptions and unattended operation
A spare PC and OBS are not a guarantee of recovery after every crash, restart, power loss, or network interruption. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, testing the stream, checking stream health and watch-page access, and monitoring quality. If the stream must stay available while you are away, arrange an alerting or monitoring plan and decide how someone will respond to a failure. A desktop UPS may help bridge a short power interruption, but it will not fix an internet or software failure.

Know YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not rely on a single longer broadcast being archived in full. If you need a complete copy, make a separate local recording and verify that the file is growing and usable during the stream.

OBS on a spare PC is the direct fit when you want to broadcast gameplay being produced live on that computer. A continuous loop of prerecorded gameplay is different: the stream plays existing footage rather than a live game session, and you need rights to all included video and audio. YouTube’s encoder information identifies cloud-based 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos as a use case. A loop does not remove copyright obligations, and YouTube’s archive behavior still matters if you want to preserve the broadcast.

- YouTube will not let the channel go live: verify the channel, check for live-stream restrictions from the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- OBS connects, but the stream drops frames: check connection stability to the ingest server and lower the bitrate if the upload cannot sustain it.
- The stream stutters while the game runs: reduce the game’s workload, output resolution or frame rate, or scene complexity; check whether rendering or encoding warnings identify the bottleneck.
- There is no sound or the mix is wrong: confirm the intended audio sources are active in OBS, watch their meters while sound is produced, and verify the mix in the YouTube preview before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream is live but viewers cannot find or open it: check the YouTube watch page and event visibility/access settings during the test rather than assuming that a successful OBS connection makes the event accessible.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: streams longer than 12 hours are not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold. Use a local recording when a complete copy matters and confirm it is recording during the broadcast.
