For a single finished image, you usually do not need to model everything in the painting—or build a complete, navigable game level.
Start by reading the painting, not by modeling it
Before opening Blender or another 3D application, identify what makes the image work. Mark the focal area, the main light direction, the horizon or eye level, and the large value groups. Divide the scene into foreground, middle ground and background. These decisions give the blockout a purpose: it should preserve the image’s read, not reproduce every brushstroke as geometry.
If you are starting from a loose concept rather than a fixed painting, sketch a few small composition variations and make a quick value study before choosing one. Misa Steinmetz describes using thumbnails, depth layers and a value pass to settle the composition before moving into 3D in her Creative Bloq walkthrough.
Match the view and establish the large forms
Bring the painting into the 3D scene as a reference or background image, then adjust the camera until its framing and perspective support the source composition. Build only the primary masses with simple shapes. Compare the rendered silhouette with the painting, changing camera position, framing or proportions until the big forms line up.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set a basic light that agrees with the value study while the scene is still easy to change. Steinmetz used a 50 mm focal length in her own example; that is a project-specific choice, not a standard setting. Choose a lens and camera angle based on the painting’s perspective and the image you need to make.
Add geometry where it improves the image
Once camera and blockout are working, add forms that strengthen the silhouette, clarify depth or support the focal area. Repeating architecture can often be assembled from a small set of reusable pieces rather than modeled as unique objects. Steinmetz’s example uses reusable columns, domes and arches, then adds environmental elements around them.

Organize the scene into collections or equivalent groups—for example, blockout, architecture, nature, lighting and atmosphere. Being able to isolate or toggle groups makes it easier to revise the composition, compare versions or render only the elements needed for a paintover. For a single-view illustration, hidden surfaces and off-camera spaces only need enough geometry to support the visible result.
Render early and use paintover to make the image yours
Render a draft as soon as the camera, major forms and light are in place. Check whether it retains the painting’s composition and value structure before spending time on small props or surface details. Steinmetz reports using 50 samples or fewer for an early render in her project; that is an example from her settings, not a universal target for speed or quality.

Bring the draft into a 2D painting application and adjust shapes, color, atmosphere and edges. Paintover is not just a final polish step: it lets you keep painterly decisions flexible instead of forcing every mark into the 3D scene. If a correction depends on perspective, depth or a cast shadow, return to 3D, revise the geometry or lighting, and render again. Otherwise, make the change in 2D.
Use render passes only when they help the finish
As the scene develops, separate elements that will be useful to adjust independently. Depending on the image, that could include mist, alternate materials or selection and mask passes. Composite those layers in 2D, then paint over them to shape the color, atmosphere, focal accents and surface character.

Steinmetz’s workflow moves between Blender and Photoshop as she adds buildings, props and nature, then brings mist and material passes back for compositing and further paintover. A GameDevStation environment-concept-art course also describes a workflow involving blockout, lighting, render passes and Photoshop paintover. Treat passes as helpful ingredients, not a requirement to make the final image fully procedural.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose how much of the environment to build
| Goal | What to prioritize | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One polished illustration or concept image | Camera, visible composition, key silhouettes and lighting; paint over the render for the final style. | Less work on hidden geometry, but the scene is optimized for its chosen view. |
| A reusable or navigable environment | More complete geometry, organized assets and spatial continuity beyond the initial camera. | More flexibility for moving cameras or production handoff, with more work on areas a single image might never show. |
The demonstrated practitioner workflow focuses on producing a single painted image. If the environment must support a moving camera or further production use, plan for broader geometry and asset organization from the start; a single-view blockout is not a substitute for that work.

Pick tools that support the workflow
Blender is the main 3D application in Steinmetz’s example, and she describes it as free and recommends it as a starting point. For paintover, her workflow uses Photoshop; the Marco Bucci course page discusses exporting renders to Photoshop for painting, while the GameDevStation course page names Photoshop compositing. A Creative Bloq workshop FAQ also gives Clip Studio Paint and Procreate as possible painting applications.
A drawing tablet can be useful if you plan to paint over renders, but it is not necessary for making the 3D blockout. The same workshop FAQ mentions Wacom and Huion as examples; it does not establish a required brand, model or size.
