An effective WNBA defense against a fast, physical team makes the offense work for every advantage: it contains the ball, communicates through screens, rotates together to protect the rim and shooters, and secures the rebound to finish the possession. Physical tools help, but they work only when defenders use them with sound timing and positioning. No single coverage is best for every matchup.
Contain the ball before the offense gets downhill
A clean drive past the first defender can force the defense into emergency help, opening a pass or a path to the rim. The on-ball defender’s first job is to stay balanced, avoid conceding a straight-line route, and make the handler change direction or pace. Teammates need to be ready to help without leaving the next rotation too late.
WNBA.com analysis describes this connected ability to shrink space through timely, consistent rotations as “ground coverage.” It is not simply five defenders standing close together: help must deter the drive, and another defender must cover the space that help leaves.
Pressure can start before a screen. In a 2023 analysis of New York’s defense, Betnijah Laney is described picking up handlers early and making them work through screens. The aim is to disrupt timing and consume part of the possession, not necessarily to press full court or force a steal. This is a historical example, not a description of the Liberty’s current scheme.

Choose screen coverage for the matchup
Screen defense is a choice among trade-offs. A coverage that stops one ball-handler may expose a shooter, a mismatch, or the screener’s roll. The right option depends on the handler’s pull-up threat, the screener’s abilities, the defenders’ mobility, and how well the other three players can rotate.
| Coverage | What it can help do | What the defense must manage |
|---|---|---|
| Switch | Keep the handler from turning the corner by exchanging assignments at the screen. | A temporary mismatch and clear communication about who has the screener. It works best when defenders can hold up against different sizes and speeds. |
| Hedge or trap | Interrupt a dangerous handler by sending a second defender toward the ball. | The ball is briefly guarded by two defenders, so teammates behind them must rotate quickly to cover the screener, rim, and open pass. |
| Show and recover | Contain the action with the big defender, then try to return to the original matchups. | Timing: the big must discourage the drive without getting stranded away from the screener or rim. |
| Drop | Keep the big closer to the basket and protect the lane. | Space for a pull-up shot or a handler who can make an uncontested decision in front of the big. |
These are tactical trade-offs, not a universal ranking. New York’s 2023 analysis offers a historical illustration of a flexible package: man-to-man as a base, switching on screens, and opponent-dependent traps, hedges, and shows with recovery. It should not be read as a current account of the team.

Make help, rim protection, and recovery work as one
Help defenders have to discourage penetration while staying connected to shooters. If one defender steps toward the ball, teammates must recognize the resulting openings, protect the rim, and recover to passing targets. An aggressive scheme can create pressure, but a crisp pass to the corner may force a long rotation and an open shot.
WNBA.com’s tactical analysis illustrates how different physical strengths can serve this team task: Alyssa Thomas’s length, speed, anticipation, and communication can disrupt a drive before it reaches the rim; A’ja Wilson’s mobility supports rim protection in different ball-screen positions; and Breanna Stewart’s help positioning around the nail allows her to close gaps. These are examples of defensive roles and attributes, not claims about current assignments.

Strength and length are useful when they help a defender stay balanced, flatten a screen, narrow a passing window, or contest without fouling. Timing matters: an early, uncontrolled reach can give away a foul, while late help can leave the attacker a clean finish. The goal is to make catches, screens, and driving routes difficult without losing the ability to recover.
Finish the stop with a rebound
A miss is not a completed defensive possession if the offense retrieves the ball. Defenders need to locate opponents, make contact where appropriate, and secure the rebound before turning to transition. Blocks and deflections also need context: a block that stays in play may still leave the offense with the ball, while a recovered loose ball can end the possession and start a break.

The official WNBA team statistics interface includes defensive rebounds and rebound percentage, opponent second-chance points, opponent points in the paint, opponent fast-break points, and opponent points off turnovers. Together, these measures help assess whether a team is containing the interior, ending possessions, and limiting transition scoring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge whether the defense is working
Use several indicators and watch the possessions behind them. Defensive rating provides a possession-adjusted headline measure; opponent points in the paint and fast-break points help describe where scoring is occurring; and rebounds and second-chance points show whether misses become extra possessions. Opponent points off turnovers can help assess the cost of mistakes, but pair it with the defense’s own turnovers and film: pressure that produces activity is not automatically pressure that controls the game.

When comparing teams or games, use the same season, season type, date range, and game set. Official statistics pages are live interfaces, so any published rank or numerical comparison should identify those filters and be checked at the time of publication. These measures do not by themselves establish that a team is fast, physical, or vulnerable to a particular coverage; those judgments require matchup context and film.
What to look for on film
Statistics describe outcomes; film can reveal whether the defense is repeatedly making the offense work. Watch a series of possessions rather than judging by one block, steal, or missed shot.
- Does the on-ball defender prevent an easy route into the lane?
- Do defenders call the screen coverage and identify switches clearly?
- When help comes, does another player protect the rim or cover the pass?
- Can the defense recover to shooters without fouling or giving up a direct finish?
- Does the possession end with a defensive rebound, or does the opponent get another chance?
A defense is controlling the matchup when these actions recur and force the offense to spend time and effort creating a good look—not merely when a single possession ends in a miss.
