To keep recorded lessons playing in order, build a playlist in OBS Studio with a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. That makes playback restart when it reaches the end; it does not protect the broadcast if your computer, internet connection, OBS, stream key or YouTube stream fails. If you want playback to continue without a computer running at home, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is a separate option.
What “backup playlist” means
The phrase can mean two different things. A looping lesson playlist moves from one recording to the next and starts over at the end. A broadcast backup, or failover, is a separate encoder or playout system that can take over if the primary stream stops. A playlist solves the first problem, not the second.
Also keep a separate copy of important source recordings. An OBS playlist points to media files; it is not a backup of those files.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
1. Prepare and order the lesson files
- Put the lesson videos somewhere the streaming computer can access them locally. Arrange the intended playback order before adding them to OBS.
- Keep another copy of files you cannot afford to lose. An external drive can hold a copy, but the drive itself does not provide stream failover.
2. Add the VLC Video Source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS documents its VLC Video Source as a way to play multiple media items. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise the source may not appear.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene that will be sent to YouTube, then populate its playlist with the lesson files in the required order.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed curriculum sequence. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the sequence when the last file ends. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.

Use a single-file source only for one repeated lesson
For one video that should replay continuously, add an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop setting. Use VLC Video Source for a sequence of multiple files. The OBS documentation describes local media sources; it does not establish that pasting a YouTube-hosted playlist URL into OBS will play it as a media playlist.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is eligible to livestream and create or open the intended live stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the server information and private stream key provided by YouTube Studio. The exact available connection options can depend on the account and OBS version.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a recording, screenshot or public stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Use the YouTube Live Control Room preview to check the feed before starting the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams ahead of time, checking the preview, confirming viewer access and monitoring audio and video during the stream.
YouTube says livestream eligibility includes a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the current status and stream settings in YouTube Studio before scheduling; platform requirements and account status can change. See YouTube live streaming tips.

4. Test the whole loop before leaving it unattended
- Watch the transition from one lesson file to the next, including whether the outgoing audio cuts cleanly and the next lesson begins as expected.
- Check that each file’s aspect ratio appears correctly in the stream preview and that its audio is audible.
- Let the final playlist item finish and verify that the first item starts again. A loop setting cannot compensate for a missing or unreadable file.
- If you are recording an archive locally, verify that the recording starts and that the output file is being written and can be played back.
What the playlist will not recover from
The VLC playlist governs which media file OBS plays. It does not keep broadcasting if the host computer loses power, OBS stops, the local network fails, the stream key becomes invalid or YouTube has an outage. For actual failover, you need an independent encoder or playout system and a tested switchover. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and verifying that the player rolls to the backup encoder. Do not assume this creates zero downtime.
For fewer local dependencies, cloud playout is another operating model: media is uploaded and playback runs on a provider’s infrastructure. Compare current storage, stream-hour and simultaneous-stream limits, platform compatibility, controls, support and documented recovery behavior before choosing a service. Vendor statements about recovery are claims to verify, not guarantees of uninterrupted service.

Check rights and preserve the recordings
Clear every element in the lesson
Make sure you have the rights to stream each lesson and all included images, music and other material. Owning a video file does not automatically give you streaming rights for its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say creators represent and warrant that they have the necessary worldwide rights for Live Content, including applicable music licensing rights.
Do not rely on a 24/7 YouTube archive as your only copy
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes one continuous 24/7 event an unreliable way to preserve a complete replay. Record locally if you need a durable archive, check that the recording is valid, and consider publishing individual lesson files separately where appropriate.
