To restart FFmpeg after it exits, run it under an external process supervisor or a retrying wrapper. FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery can help with some temporary output failures while FFmpeg is still running, but it does not restart a dead process. These solve different failure layers, and neither can fix every cause of a dropped YouTube stream.
First identify which part stopped
A 24/7 stream can fail in more than one way. FFmpeg may exit, in which case something outside the process must launch it again. Or FFmpeg may remain running while its output to YouTube is failing; in some cases, FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer can attempt output recovery. A third possibility is that FFmpeg is sending data but YouTube has stopped accepting it or the event is no longer live.
| What you observe | What may help | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process exited | An external supervisor or retrying wrapper can relaunch it. | A relaunch does not itself fix the reason FFmpeg exited. |
| FFmpeg is running, but output failed | FIFO output recovery may help with certain temporary failures, depending on the output and FFmpeg build. | It does not revive an exited process or guarantee that YouTube will resume the event. |
| FFmpeg runs but the YouTube event is unhealthy or offline | Compare FFmpeg logs with YouTube Live Control Room health and error messages; investigate the specific cause. | A running process is not proof that viewers can see a healthy live stream. |
Set up a process restart
Use a supervisor on an always-on host
On Linux, a service manager such as systemd is a common way to keep a long-running FFmpeg command under supervision. Configure it to restart after an unexpected exit, use a sensible delay, and set a start-rate limit or alert so a permanent error does not become a rapid, unnoticed restart loop. The exact service configuration depends on your distribution, service-manager version, and command; consult the documentation for the system you run rather than copying a supposedly universal unit file.
A supervisor can relaunch the process, but it cannot make an invalid stream key valid, repair a broken input, correct a malformed command, or override a YouTube rejection. Capture FFmpeg’s exit status and logs so you can distinguish a transient disconnect from a persistent configuration error.

Make background FFmpeg safe to supervise
When FFmpeg runs as a background task, its FAQ recommends using -nostdin or redirecting standard input. This prevents input checks from suspending a background invocation. The documented illustrative form is ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT; it is a placeholder, not a complete YouTube music-stream command. Keep your actual input, stream mapping, codecs, and destination when adapting your invocation.
Decide what should happen after a relaunch
Test the exact channel and event configuration. Establish whether a restarted encoder reconnects to the intended event automatically or whether a person must take action in Live Control Room. Check what happens to the input position, playlist, and audio/video continuity after a restart. Do not assume that an automatic FFmpeg relaunch also restarts an ended YouTube event or produces a gap-free public stream.

Consider FIFO recovery for output failures
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer separates encoding and muxing with a queue and can attempt recovery from certain output failures. It is an additional measure for a process that remains alive, not a substitute for process supervision. The FFmpeg documentation includes this RTMP illustration:
ffmpeg -re -i ... -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is a documentation example with an illustrative destination, not a tested YouTube command. Do not paste it unchanged: adapt it to your actual input, stream key destination, mappings, codecs, and installed FFmpeg build, then test it before relying on it for a continuous stream.

-attempt_recoveryis documented as false by default. Enabling it asks the FIFO muxer to try recovery.-recovery_wait_timeis documented with a five-second default; the example explicitly sets it to one second. A shorter wait is not a promise of faster recovery or successful reconnection.max_recovery_attemptsis documented as zero, meaning unlimited attempts by default. Consider how unlimited retries interact with logging, alerting, and a permanent failure.- The FIFO queue is documented with a 60-packet default. Queue behavior and the effect of that capacity depend on the stream and build.
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows processing to continue without waiting for the queue to clear, at the cost of omitting queued packets. That may create missing media; it is not lossless recovery.
These option details are version-sensitive. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version actually installed, validate the options, and test the exact output path.
Do not treat HTTP reconnect flags as a YouTube output restart
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol reconnect options cover specified HTTP input situations, such as reconnecting around EOF or network errors, and can include retry limits and HTTP status handling. They are protocol-specific; they are not a generic restart switch. Whether an option applies depends on the protocol and whether it is used on the input or output side. Do not copy HTTP -reconnect flags as a fix for an RTMP or RTMPS YouTube publishing output.

Verify the YouTube stream after recovery
- Check FFmpeg’s logs. Look for the exit reason, connection errors, repeated retries, and whether the process is actually producing output.
- Check Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key, then a preview in Live Control Room followed by clicking Go live. After a restart, verify that the intended event is receiving the feed and is live; do not assume the original event resumed.
- Read stream health and timestamped errors. YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room expose health information and error messages. Match their timestamps against FFmpeg’s logs to narrow down whether the issue is local, in transit, or at ingest.
- Check the viewer-facing event. Confirm the public event is playing as intended. An encoder process and an ingest preview alone do not prove that viewers are receiving the expected stream.
- Review encoder settings for your actual codec and format. YouTube publishes recommendations by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate, including bitrate ranges. Follow the current guidance for the configuration you use, and test and monitor the stream rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a guarantee that a continuous stream will stay uninterrupted or be archived as you expect. YouTube also notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so check current guidance for archive and DVR behavior when planning a long-running event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the cause, not just the restart
| Symptom | Checks and next steps |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits repeatedly and the supervisor keeps relaunching it | Inspect the latest exit logs before increasing retries. Check the input, command syntax, codec and mapping choices, stream key, and any platform error. Use a restart delay and alert or rate limit so a permanent fault is visible rather than hidden by a loop. |
| FFmpeg stays up but the feed stops recovering | Compare FFmpeg output errors with YouTube’s health indicator and timestamped error messages. Confirm the FIFO settings are supported by the installed build and applicable to the actual output format. |
| The process reconnects, but the event remains offline | Check whether the stream key and server URL are correct and whether the event is still accepting the feed. Confirm the preview and event state in Live Control Room; a human may need to take action for the specific event configuration. |
| Restart succeeds but the stream has gaps or missing audio/video | Check whether a process restart interrupted the input or whether FIFO queue overflow dropped packets. Review stream mappings and source availability, then test any changes against the actual channel. |
| The stream fails despite a healthy-looking local process | Use both FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s health and error details. A process can be alive while its feed is unhealthy; check the event viewers see rather than relying on process status alone. |
Recovery logic cannot resolve every root cause. An expired or invalid stream key, unavailable or damaged source, incompatible settings, account or platform limits, and an outage may require a separate remedy. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a command shared publicly, logs exposed to others, or screenshots.
