For a gaming stream, the first is simpler when your audience can watch on that platform; the second can work when callers need to use a separate app. In either case, screen callers, rehearse the complete audio route, and tell viewers exactly where and how to request a turn.
Choose how callers will join
There are two practical workflows described by the platforms in their help documentation. They are not interchangeable: a hosted request-to-join feature depends on viewers using that platform’s audience experience, while VoIP routing brings a separate call into the streaming studio.
| Decision | Hosted in-platform call-in | VoIP call routed through a mixer |
|---|---|---|
| How the caller joins | The viewer requests to enter from the platform’s audience experience. | The caller uses a separate VoIP app; its audio is routed into the studio. |
| Host controls | Riverside documents reviewing a request, accepting or declining it, and removing an admitted caller. | Controls depend on the calling app and routing setup. StreamYard’s guide describes audio routing, not a universal screening queue. |
| Audience destination | Riverside’s built-in request applies to its own live recording or webinar audience, not viewers watching only on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook. | A separate app may suit callers who prefer that service. The StreamYard guide does not establish that a public phone number or phone-network bridge is included. |
| Setup | Fewer routing components if viewers are already watching through Riverside. | Requires a VoIP app plus a physical or virtual audio mixer. |
| Compatibility | Riverside documents call-in requests on desktop Chrome or Edge. | Depends on the VoIP service, operating system, and audio-routing configuration. |
This comparison reflects the documented workflows, not a hands-on product test. If you are streaming to an external destination and want to use Riverside’s built-in request feature, direct callers to the Riverside audience experience rather than assuming viewers on the external stream can request entry there.
Plan the show before inviting callers
Explain the route and the rules
Tell viewers where to watch, how to request a turn, whether you accept audio-only callers, and who is screening requests. For a gaming show, be specific about the moment callers should join—for example, during a post-match discussion rather than while you are in the middle of a round. State how long a turn is intended to last and how the host will move to the next person.

Assign a producer when possible
A producer can review requests and manage the queue while the host keeps the show moving. Riverside lets a host or producer review a requester’s name and message before accepting or declining. More than one person can request, and multiple callers may be admitted at once; a deliberate queue and one-at-a-time turn rule can make the conversation easier to moderate.
Set expectations about being on air
Riverside says admitted callers are live and recorded, and can be seen and heard by the studio and live audience. Make that clear before admitting anyone. The host or producer can remove an admitted caller; callers can control their camera and microphone and leave. Recording-consent obligations vary by location, and the platform instructions do not establish a universal legal rule or disclosure script.

Set up a hosted call-in with Riverside
- Choose the audience destination. Create the Riverside live recording or webinar experience your viewers will use. If your main broadcast is on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook, explain that viewers watching only there cannot use Riverside’s built-in call-in request.
- Share the Riverside audience link. Riverside says its public audience link can let non-registered viewers watch, chat, and request to join. Its help page states capacity for up to 100 non-registered audience members watching in real time; treat that as Riverside’s stated capacity for this audience-link use, not a guarantee for every plan or account configuration.
- Keep a request queue. Have the host or producer review each requester’s name and message, then accept or decline. Tell the audience whether you are taking callers in order or selecting requests by topic.
- Admit callers deliberately. Once admitted, the caller is live and recorded. Confirm they can hear the conversation, then give them the floor. Use the host or producer’s removal control if a caller needs to leave the show.
- Offer a desktop route for requests. Riverside documents call-in requests on a computer using Chrome or Edge. Audience viewing may be available through additional browser and device options, but viewers who want to request to join should use the documented desktop browser route.
Route a separate VoIP caller into the studio
StreamYard’s call-in guide describes using a VoIP service such as Skype or WhatsApp and a virtual or physical mixer to capture the call and route its audio into the studio. It gives Loopback for Mac and Voicemeeter for Windows as examples; these are examples from that guide, not universal operating-system requirements.
- Choose the calling app and routing method. Confirm that the caller can use the app and that your selected mixer can route the call audio to the streaming studio. This workflow is not evidence of a public telephone number or a PSTN bridge.
- Configure the call’s output. In the calling app, select the output device or mixer route that feeds the studio’s audio setup. Exact device labels and menus depend on the app, operating system, and mixer.
- Configure the studio input. In the streaming studio, select the device or routed input that receives the caller audio. StreamYard’s guide includes device-selection steps, but the correct labels vary by configuration.
- Put on headphones or earbuds. StreamYard recommends them for guests to help prevent audio echo. Monitor the caller and your own microphone separately so you can catch feedback or an absent signal before going live.
- Rehearse the full path privately. With a second person or device, check host microphone, caller audio, return audio, audience mix, mute behavior, and levels. Confirm what the audience hears rather than relying only on what the host hears locally.
The cited setup instructions do not establish a universal bandwidth target, latency figure, audio-quality guarantee, or broadcast-delay setting. Test the actual devices and routes you plan to use, and avoid promising callers a particular delay or sound quality.

Keep non-calling viewers involved
Not everyone will want or be able to go on air. Riverside documents live-stream chat aggregation for supported destinations, where a host can reply to or highlight viewers’ messages. It also says disabling live-stream chat disables audience Q&A. If you plan to turn chat off, decide in advance how viewers can still contribute questions or topics.
Check YouTube eligibility before the event
YouTube’s live-streaming help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; the stated minimum age to live stream is 16. Policies can change, so check YouTube’s current eligibility requirements before scheduling the show. These are YouTube destination requirements, not requirements for every streaming platform.

Troubleshoot the caller path
- A Riverside viewer cannot request to join: Confirm they are using the Riverside audience experience, not watching only on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook. For a request, direct them to desktop Chrome or Edge.
- The VoIP caller is not audible in the studio: Check the calling app’s selected output, the mixer’s routing, and the studio’s selected input. Verify each link in the chain during a private rehearsal.
- The caller hears an echo: Have the caller use headphones or earbuds, as StreamYard recommends, and check whether speaker audio is feeding back into a microphone.
- The host hears the caller, but the audience does not: Check the studio’s audience mix and selected input, then verify the stream audio with a second device or listener.
- Several requests arrive at once: Use a queue, admit callers deliberately, and establish turn-taking. Riverside allows multiple requests and can have more than one caller admitted; the host or producer can remove a caller.
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Recheck channel verification, any live-stream restriction within the prior 90 days, and the minimum-age rule in YouTube’s current help documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
The call-in methods above are for a live, interactive show with a host and callers. If you also want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos between shows, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not bring camera footage or callers live. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
