First make sure your channel can go live and that you have permission to rebroadcast everything in the footage. Then connect the playback source to YouTube with a stream key, test it, and plan for interruptions and archive limits. The footage remains prerecorded: describe it honestly rather than presenting it as a live play session.
Choose where the stream will run
The key decision is whether the video playback and stream encoding happen on a computer you operate or on a cloud service. YouTube’s encoder guide covers encoder-based broadcasting, including gameplay, and lists a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streams. That listing is not an endorsement or a comparison of service quality.

There is no general benchmark establishing that one approach is more reliable or cheaper. Compare the actual controls and costs of the tools you are considering, along with how much hands-on monitoring you can provide.
Prepare YouTube and the gameplay files
Confirm channel eligibility before scheduling
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s getting-started guide before planning a launch.

Review every sound and image you will rebroadcast
Having a gameplay recording does not automatically give you the rights to rebroadcast everything inside it. Review the game publisher’s permissions and check in-game music, licensed tracks, overlays, usernames, and other third-party material. YouTube warns that third-party content can affect a live broadcast, and Content ID claims may be made after a stream ends if it is archived. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Build a repeatable program
Put the clips in the order you want viewers to see them, or prepare one continuous video. Preview the sequence before going live: check that transitions do not leave long black frames, audio levels are consistent, and playback does not stop at the end. Playlist and repeat controls differ by encoder or cloud service; YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not specify a consumer playlist setup.

Set up a local encoder for YouTube
- Choose an encoder and prepare playback. Use software capable of sending a video source to YouTube. Configure its playback source to use your prepared sequence and repeat it if the software supports looping. Confirm that playback continues after the final clip.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Create a live stream and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection process.
- Protect the stream key. Paste the key into the encoder’s stream settings and treat it like a password. Do not publish it, include it in a screen capture, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Preview before committing to a long run. Start playback and encoding, then inspect the YouTube preview for video, audio, and correct framing. Do a short test run before relying on the setup for continuous programming.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Start the encoder and confirm the stream appears as expected. YouTube says starting the encoder creates the watch page. Check playback periodically and have a plan for a stopped clip, frozen output, or lost connection.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation describes how media playlists can concatenate segments into a continuous, decodable stream, but it is intended for encoder vendors—not a consumer walkthrough for configuring a playlist in OBS or another particular program. Follow the instructions for the encoder you choose rather than assuming YouTube provides a universal loop setting.
Label prerecorded streams honestly
A loop of recorded gameplay is not a live performance. Make the title, description, and any other available disclosure clear enough that viewers understand they are watching prerecorded footage. Platform controls differ, so do not assume one platform’s rerun setting applies everywhere.

For Twitch, use its Rerun controls
Twitch provides a Rerun setting for non-live content. Twitch says to select the Rerun option and prefix both the stream title and go-live notification with [Rerun]. Its help page warns, “Failing to properly label your stream as a Rerun can damage community trust.” See Twitch’s On-Demand Content guidance. Check Twitch’s current controls before broadcasting; YouTube’s stream-key setup above is for YouTube, not Twitch.
Plan for interruptions and archives
“Continuous” describes the intended programming, not a guarantee that an individual broadcast will run forever. Playback can end, a computer or connection can fail, and platform handling can vary. Check the selected tool’s looping and reconnection behavior and decide who will respond if the stream stops.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that an individual broadcast can run indefinitely or guarantee how an archive is handled for a longer session. Plan around the platform’s current limits and your service’s behavior rather than treating one stream as an endless archive.

- The encoder will not connect: confirm that you copied the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube broadcast, that the channel is eligible to stream, and that the key was not changed or exposed. Re-enter the current key if needed.
- The stream ends when the last clip finishes: the playback source may not be set to repeat. Check the player or playlist’s loop behavior, then test past the end of the sequence before starting a long run.
- The picture freezes or the stream drops: check whether local playback and the computer are still running, then inspect the internet connection and encoder status. For a cloud service, check its playback and reconnect controls; do not assume recovery behavior without confirming it.
- Music or other content triggers a rights issue: identify the material in the recording, review the rights you have to rebroadcast it, and remove or replace content you cannot use. A gameplay capture may include third-party audio even when the gameplay itself is yours.
- The archive is missing or differs from expectations: account for YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold for streams under 12 hours. Do not assume longer sessions receive the same archive handling.
