A yellow or red YouTube Live health warning identifies a detected problem with the incoming stream—not automatically a bad internet connection. Open Live Control Room, copy the exact warning and its timestamp, then fix the matching encoder setting. Red means a critical error that may stop an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow means a moderate error that may degrade quality. YouTube’s error guide lists issues including format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframes, resolution, and primary/backup stream mismatches.

What a YouTube stream health warning means

The Health Indicator in YouTube Live Control Room displays detected stream errors, including timestamps. An error remains visible while the issue is unresolved. Treat the warning’s full wording as a diagnostic clue: it names the dimension YouTube detected, but it may not explain every viewer’s playback problem.

  • Red / critical: may prevent an event from starting or cause viewers to have problems.
  • Yellow / moderate: may degrade event quality.

Use the timestamp to correlate the warning with an encoder change or connection interruption. For broader context about the stream’s status and metrics, see YouTube’s live stream metrics guidance.

Diagnose the warning before changing settings

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and read the complete warning beside the Health Indicator. Record its color and timestamp.
  2. In your encoder, inspect the field named by the warning and the related settings: protocol and container, codec and profile, number of audio/video streams, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
  3. Compare the encoder settings with the resolution and ingestion configuration selected in YouTube, and consult the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table. Do not copy a bitrate from a different codec, resolution, or frame-rate row.
  4. Preview the stream in the encoder. If the local picture or sound is already poor, check source routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local recording. Updating the encoder or testing another encoder can help isolate a software issue.
  5. If local output is healthy, check the outbound connection’s speed and stability. Ask affected viewers whether the problem is limited to one device, shared by people on one network, or present across unrelated networks; those patterns point to different likely causes. Contact your ISP if the connection test indicates an outbound network problem. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting steps.
  6. Change one relevant setting at a time, then check the Health Indicator again. Test before the event with representative motion and audio.

Warning-to-fix guide

Warning family What to inspect What to do
Incorrect stream format, codec, or container The warning may identify an unsupported container, audio or video codec, or codec profile. Follow the specific message and the selected ingestion configuration. For the incorrect-format case, YouTube’s warning page instructs creators to use H.264 video and AAC audio. Check the container and profile as well.
Incorrect bitrate The bitrate may not match the selected resolution and ingestion configuration, or may fall outside the recommended bounds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. If available upload capacity cannot support that resolution, lower the resolution and use its corresponding bitrate.
Incorrect audio settings Missing or multiple audio streams, unsupported channel count, sample rate, codec, or bitrate. Send one audio stream in mono or stereo. Check the warning’s requested values; YouTube’s general guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo and 44.1 kHz stereo audio.
Incorrect video settings Missing or multiple video streams, interlaced video, or an excessive frame rate. Send one progressive video stream and stay within the supported frame rate. If you change frame rate, adjust keyframe cadence so keyframes remain two seconds apart.
Incorrect keyframe frequency or GOP Keyframes may be arriving too frequently or too infrequently; GOP configuration can affect transcoding. Set a two-second keyframe interval, do not exceed four seconds, and use a Closed GOP where configurable. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames.
Incorrect video size or resolution The encoded dimensions may disagree with the resolution selected in ingestion settings or may not be supported for that configuration. Match encoder width and height to the selected ingestion resolution. If bandwidth is the constraint, select a lower resolution and its matching bitrate.
Primary/backup stream mismatch Failover streams differ in one or more settings. Match resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, channel count, and audio codec across primary and backup.
Encoder start or connectivity failure The encoder may have a stale or incorrect stream key, URL, protocol, or lack support for the selected software connection. Copy the stream key again from Live Control Room and update the encoder. For an RTMPS SSL or timeout error, verify the RTMPS URL, try port 443 if appropriate, and confirm RTMPS support in the encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.

Encoder settings to verify for RTMP/RTMPS

YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. The specific warning matters: for example, YouTube’s incorrect-format message directs creators to H.264 video and AAC audio for that case, even though the general guide lists additional codec options.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Keyframes: target every two seconds. At 30 fps, set 60 frames per keyframe interval; at another frame rate, configure the interval in seconds or calculate the equivalent frame count.
  • Video: use progressive scan and square pixels; YouTube’s advanced settings list Rec. 709 for SDR.
  • Audio: the general guide lists 44.1 kHz stereo; the error guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo.
  • Bitrate: match the precise codec, resolution, and frame-rate row in YouTube’s table. The table includes minimum as well as recommended rates, so do not extrapolate between rows.

For H.264 RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s page lists these recommended rates: 1080p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps; 720p at 60 fps, 8 Mbps; and 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps. These are YouTube Help recommendations published on the page accessed October 3, 2026—not independent performance benchmarks. Consult the current table for other codecs and configurations.

When the warning is not simply an internet problem

Separate encoder output from delivery to viewers. If the encoder preview or local archive already has bad picture or sound, look first at the source, routing, encoder, or computer load. If the local output is healthy, check outbound internet stability. A problem seen by one viewer can be local to that device or connection; reports from viewers on one shared network may point to that network; reports across unrelated networks call for checking the stream and its wider delivery path. The Health Indicator detects stream issues, but a viewer’s playback complaint does not by itself prove the encoder is at fault.
