To create a custom Minecraft server address with Cloudflare, add your domain to Cloudflare DNS and create a DNS record such as mc.example.com that points to your server. Use an A record for an IPv4 address, an AAAA record for IPv6, or a CNAME that points to a hostname resolving to the server. Leave the record DNS only when Minecraft must connect directly to your server.
If the Java server uses a non-default port, add an SRV record for _minecraft._tcp so players can enter the hostname without typing a port. DNS gives you a memorable address but does not hide the origin IP. A normal Cloudflare Tunnel is not a general-purpose TCP route for Minecraft; Cloudflare Spectrum is the Cloudflare product to investigate when TCP proxying and origin-IP protection are the goal.

What a custom Minecraft IP actually is
A custom Minecraft “IP” is normally a domain hostname. Instead of giving players a numeric address such as 203.0.113.25, you give them mc.example.com. DNS translates that hostname to the server address before the Minecraft client connects.

This distinction matters because a DNS-only name improves branding and memorability but does not conceal the origin. Anyone who resolves the hostname can see the address it returns, and a player who already knows the address can still attempt a direct connection.
Choose the right Cloudflare setup

For most private servers, start with DNS-only records. Move to Spectrum only when hiding the origin or proxying the TCP service is worth the additional product and plan requirements.
Prerequisites
- A registered domain that you can place in a Cloudflare zone.
- Cloudflare DNS configured as the domain’s authoritative DNS when possible. Cloudflare describes this as Full Setup; it also gives Tunnel the best experience and allows newly started tunnels to configure DNS records automatically.
- A Minecraft Java server with a known listening port and a reachable origin address.
- Permission to change the host firewall and, if the server is behind a router, create an inbound port-forwarding rule.
- A stable public IPv4 or IPv6 address, or a hostname that reliably resolves to the server.
DNS cannot make a private LAN address public, bypass carrier-grade NAT, or open a blocked inbound port. If the server is behind CGNAT or another network that does not permit inbound connections, a DNS record alone will not fix reachability.

Direct setup: create the custom hostname
1. Add the domain to Cloudflare
- Sign in to Cloudflare and choose Add a site.
- Enter the domain that will contain the server hostname, such as
example.com. - Cloudflare will provide authoritative nameservers. At your registrar, replace the existing nameservers with the Cloudflare nameservers if you want Cloudflare to manage DNS for the zone.
- Wait for the zone to become active, then open the domain’s DNS section. The exact dashboard wording can change, but the record-management page is normally under the domain’s DNS settings.
If the domain is already authoritative on Cloudflare, do not change nameservers again. You only need to add the Minecraft records.

2. Add an A, AAAA, or CNAME record
In DNS → Records, choose Add record and select the record type that matches your address.

Set the Name to mc if you want mc.example.com. Set TTL to Auto unless you have a specific DNS-management reason to choose another value. Set the cloud to DNS only (the grey-cloud state) for a direct Minecraft connection.

Some clients will prefer IPv6; a broken AAAA record can therefore look like an intermittent connection failure even when IPv4 works.
3. Configure the server’s network path
- Confirm the Minecraft server is listening on the intended interface and port. A server bound only to
127.0.0.1is reachable from the same machine but not from the internet. - Allow inbound TCP traffic on that port in the operating-system firewall.
- If the server is behind a router, forward the same TCP port to the machine running Minecraft. Give that machine a stable LAN address so the forwarding rule does not become stale.
- Restart or reload the firewall and router rule if required, then verify the server is actually listening before testing DNS.
Use the port configured by the server. The conventional Java default is TCP 25565, but administrators frequently choose another port, and the DNS record does not change the port by itself.
Use an SRV record for a non-default Java port
A Minecraft Java client can discover a non-default port through an SRV record. Without SRV, players must enter the hostname and port explicitly, for example mc.example.com:25570. With SRV, they can enter only mc.example.com.

In DNS notation, the resulting owner name is typically _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com. In Cloudflare’s form, use the dedicated SRV fields rather than typing the underscores into an ordinary A-record name.
Point the SRV target to an address record
Create an A or AAAA record for the SRV target, such as node.example.com, and keep it DNS-only for a direct connection. Do not leave the target without an address record: an SRV response that points to a name which does not resolve cannot guide the client to the server.
After saving the record, check it from outside your home network:

nslookup -type=SRV _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.comThe SRV response should show the chosen port and target. If the client still asks for a port, confirm that the record is under the exact hostname players are entering and that the server is Java Edition; an SRV record does not rewrite the address or open the firewall.
Test the hostname before sharing it
- Resolve the A or AAAA record from an external network, such as a phone connection rather than the server’s own Wi-Fi.
- Resolve the SRV record if the server uses a non-default port.
- Connect in Minecraft using only the hostname. For a default-port server, enter
mc.example.com. For an SRV-configured server, also enter only the hostname. - If you intentionally skipped SRV, test with the explicit form
mc.example.com:port. - Ask a player on a different internet connection to test. A local test can succeed through hairpin NAT while outside players still cannot reach the server.
There is no reliable universal propagation-time figure to promise. Test the authoritative result and the result seen by a separate resolver instead of assuming that a fixed number of minutes guarantees availability.

Why a normal Cloudflare Tunnel is not the Minecraft solution
Cloudflare Tunnel creates an outbound connection from a machine to Cloudflare and is useful for supported web services and dashboards. That does not make every TCP application available through a public hostname. A standard public-hostname Tunnel route is not a general Minecraft Java TCP proxy.
Cloudflare’s Spectrum limitations state: “Integrating Spectrum with Cloudflare Tunnel is only supported for HTTP/HTTPS applications.” The same documentation says a Spectrum application of another type, such as TCP, cannot use a Tunnel origin directly, and a direct <UUID>.cfargotunnel.com origin is not valid for that TCP use.
Do not point an SRV record at a Tunnel hostname and expect Minecraft to work. Do not place an ordinary DNS record into the orange-cloud proxy state as a substitute for a TCP service. If the requirement is a web map, web admin panel, or another HTTP/HTTPS service associated with the server, Tunnel may be appropriate for that separate service. The Minecraft game connection still needs its own supported path.

Cloudflare’s Minecraft protection guidance identifies Spectrum as the product for protecting Minecraft traffic. Spectrum uses a public domain, an edge port, and an origin mapping. It is a paid service, and the protocols available depend on the plan, so check the current plan and protocol matrix before committing.
High-level Spectrum setup
- Confirm that your Cloudflare plan includes Spectrum and supports the protocol and port arrangement you need.
- Create a Spectrum application for the public Minecraft hostname. Use the domain players will enter, not a hostname that already exposes the origin in a separate DNS-only record.
- Choose the edge port that Spectrum will accept from players.
- Configure the origin mapping to the server hostname or address and the actual Minecraft TCP port.
- Publish the DNS entry required by Spectrum’s setup for the public domain, following the values shown in the Cloudflare dashboard.
- Test from an external network using the public hostname and edge port. Confirm that the origin is not also reachable through an old DNS record, a second subdomain, or another service on the same address.
- Recheck the plan’s protocol limits and any current Cloudflare operational requirements whenever you change ports or move plans.
Spectrum changes the network architecture: players connect to Cloudflare’s edge, and Cloudflare maps that connection to the origin. It is not equivalent to turning on the proxy toggle for an ordinary DNS record.

What Spectrum can and cannot guarantee
- It can provide a Cloudflare-managed TCP edge path when your plan supports the required protocol.
- It can help keep the origin address out of the public connection path, but only if you remove or secure other records and services that reveal the same origin.
- It does not eliminate the need for a working origin, an allowed Minecraft port, and a correctly configured server.
- Its availability, supported protocols, and commercial terms are plan-dependent and can change; verify them in the current Cloudflare documentation and dashboard.
DNS-only, Tunnel, and Spectrum: practical decision rules
Choose DNS-only when branding is the requirement
Use an A, AAAA, or CNAME record when players simply need a short, memorable address and you are comfortable with direct connections to the server. Add SRV if the Java port is not the default. This is the least complicated design because Minecraft connects straight to the address returned by DNS.
Choose Tunnel for a separate web service
Use Tunnel for an HTTP/HTTPS map, control panel, or status page when that product and service are supported. Cloudflare says Full Setup, with Cloudflare authoritative DNS, provides the best Tunnel experience and can automatically configure DNS records for newly started tunnels. That convenience does not turn Tunnel into a raw Minecraft TCP transport.
Investigate Spectrum for IP masking and TCP proxying
Choose Spectrum when exposing the origin address is unacceptable or when you need a Cloudflare TCP edge service. Confirm paid-plan eligibility and protocol support first. If the only reason for considering Spectrum is a custom name, DNS-only records are usually the more proportionate solution.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Keep the Minecraft DNS record DNS-only unless you have configured a product that explicitly supports the required TCP traffic.
- Do not publish an AAAA record until IPv6 reaches the same server and port as IPv4.
- Use a stable internal address for router forwarding so the rule does not follow the wrong machine after a DHCP change.
- Remove obsolete hostnames and old DNS records that reveal an origin you are trying to protect.
- Remember that changing the hostname does not change the server’s authentication, operator permissions, whitelist, backups, or patching requirements.
- If you move ports, update the firewall, router, SRV record, Spectrum mapping, and player instructions as one change.
- Recheck Cloudflare’s current Spectrum plan and protocol documentation before relying on it for a production server.
Final decision
For a normal public Java server, create mc.example.com as a DNS-only A, AAAA, or CNAME record, open and forward the server’s TCP port, and add an _minecraft._tcp SRV record when the port is non-default. That gives players a custom address without changing the Minecraft server itself.
DNS alone does not hide the origin. A standard Cloudflare Tunnel is for supported web traffic, not a direct Minecraft TCP connection. If origin-IP protection or Cloudflare-based TCP proxying is essential, evaluate Spectrum and its current paid-plan protocol support instead of relying on the ordinary DNS proxy toggle.
