What a Roblox decal is
“Decal” describes two related things:
- The uploaded image asset stored by Roblox and given a unique asset ID.
- The
Decalinstance placed inside a Part or union in Roblox Studio.
Uploading an image does not place it in your game automatically. You must assign the image to a Decal, or use Asset Manager’s drag-and-drop insertion. A Decal normally displays one image on one face of a Part. For a repeating pattern, use a Texture instead. See Roblox’s Textures and decals documentation.

What you need
- Roblox Studio installed and connected to your Roblox account.
- An image file you created or have permission to use.
- A published or editable place for testing.
- A Part or union to receive the decal.
For the ordinary Studio Importer workflow, Roblox documents support for .png, .jpg, .gif, .tga, and .bmp files. PNG is usually the best choice when the image needs transparency; JPG/JPEG is suitable for photographs without transparency. Roblox’s separate Assets API documentation lists narrower format and size limits, including images smaller than 8000×8000 pixels, so do not treat those API restrictions as universal Studio requirements. Prepare the image
Use a square canvas when the artwork is meant to appear square. Keep important text and artwork slightly away from the edges because the image may be stretched across a Part face. Use transparency for a design that should not have a rectangular background, and export as PNG when transparency matters.

Only upload material you own or are licensed to use. That includes logos, characters, illustrations, photographs, and album or game artwork. Uploaded content must also follow Roblox’s moderation requirements, Community Rules, and Terms of Use. Roblox can reject or later remove assets that violate policy, safety, or copyright rules.
Upload the image with Studio Importer
- Open the target place in Roblox Studio.
- Select File → Import.
- Choose the image file on your computer.
- Review any warnings or errors shown by the importer.
- Click Import.
- After the asset is imported, right-click it in the Importer and choose Copy asset ID.
Roblox’s current Importer supports images for decals and textures on Parts, image labels, mesh textures, custom materials, and special effects. Older tutorials may show different upload buttons or rely on an older Asset Manager layout. File → Import is the current primary route documented by Roblox.
Imported images go through moderation. Roblox says ordinary asset moderation generally happens within a few hours, but that is not a guarantee. An asset that is pending moderation may not be visible or usable to players after the experience is published.

Put the decal on a Part manually
- Insert a Part, or select an existing Part or union.
- In Explorer, add a Decal as a child of the Part.
- Select the Decal.
- In Properties, choose the
Facewhere the image should appear:Top,Bottom,Front,Back,Left, orRight. - Set
ColorMapContentto the uploaded image. Use the asset picker or paste the copied asset ID when Studio prompts you. - Move or resize the Part and inspect the result from different angles.
The current property name is ColorMapContent. Older guides and videos may call the equivalent field Texture, so their screenshots may not match a current Studio installation.
Roblox commonly represents an asset reference in this form:
rbxassetid://1234567890Do not assume the full URI is accepted in every context. For normal Studio use, the safest approach is to use the asset picker or paste the copied asset ID into the content field.

Fast method: use Asset Manager
Asset Manager can import and store images and can create the Decal for you:

- Import the image and wait for it to process.
- Find it in the Images or Decals area.
- Insert it into the place, or drag it onto a valid
BasePart.
When you drag the image over a valid BasePart, Roblox can create a Decal inside that Part and preset its ColorMapContent to the asset. This is quicker than adding the object manually, while the Explorer method is better for learning and troubleshooting the Part–Decal hierarchy. Roblox’s current Asset Manager documentation describes the latest workflow.
Find the asset ID later
If you did not copy the ID during import, Roblox documents another route through Creator Dashboard. Open Creation → Development Items, select the relevant asset category, hover over the image, open the three-dot menu, and choose Copy Asset ID. You can then use that ID in Studio’s content picker or property field. See Roblox’s asset usage guide.

Why the decal is not showing
Check these causes in order:
- Wrong face: The image may be on the opposite side of the Part. Change
Faceand rotate the camera. - Wrong parent: Confirm the Decal is inside the Part or union, not elsewhere in Explorer.
- Missing content: Select the Decal and confirm that
ColorMapContentcontains the correct asset. - Moderation pending or rejected: An imported asset may be unavailable until moderation finishes. If Roblox rejects it, correct the source image and import a new asset rather than assuming the existing upload can be edited in place.
- Permissions: A restricted asset may work for its owner but fail when used by another creator, group, or experience.
- Unpublished changes: Save and publish the place, then test the published experience rather than relying only on the Studio viewport.
- Import issue: Try inserting the image through Asset Manager instead of manually pasting the ID.
- Loading error: Check Studio’s Output window for permission or asset-loading messages.
- Image appearance: Test with a simple opaque PNG to rule out transparency, contrast, or file-format problems.
If the image appears in Studio but not in the published experience, moderation status and asset permissions are especially important checks. A decal can also look wrong without being broken: non-square art may stretch, transparent edges change appearance against different Part colors, and a single Decal cannot project around corners.

Under Roblox’s documented asset system, assets imported by a user or group are private by default. That is normally appropriate when the asset is used only in your own experience. Sharing becomes relevant when another creator, group, or experience needs to use it.

A restricted asset can be shared with specified friends, groups, or experiences. Roblox also documents an Open Use setting, but changing an asset to Open Use is irreversible. Do not open an asset broadly unless you are comfortable with that consequence. For discoverable reuse by other creators, distributing it through the Creator Store may be more appropriate. Read the asset privacy documentation before changing access.

Decal, Texture, UI image, or thumbnail?

An uploaded image can be used in several Roblox systems, but those systems are not interchangeable. For a GUI, place an ImageLabel in the appropriate ScreenGui and assign the uploaded asset through its image content property. Roblox documents this separately in the ImageLabel ImageContent reference.
Final checks before publishing
- View the Part from the intended player-facing direction.
- Confirm the Decal is attached to the correct face and object.
- Check the image at normal in-game viewing distance; tiny text may be unreadable.
- Verify the asset is moderated and permitted for the experience that will use it.
- Save and publish the place, then test it as a player.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a decal on an NPC or mesh?
A Decal can be parented to a suitable Part or union, including a Part used by an NPC. A complex mesh may require a mesh texture or another image-mapping method instead of a single face decal.
Is a Roblox decal the same as a shirt or T-shirt?
No. A decal is an image displayed on a Part face. Shirt, T-shirt, and other avatar items use separate Marketplace and avatar-asset workflows.
