To create a Minecraft Forge 1.16.5 server, install 64-bit Java 8, download the matching Forge installer, choose Install server and a dedicated folder, then launch the server and accept its EULA only if you agree to it. After it starts, add compatible mods and test locally before configuring access for players outside your network.
Before you install Forge 1.16.5
- Java: Forge maps Minecraft 1.16.5 and earlier to Java 8. Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime and check that the
javacommand uses it, particularly if your computer has multiple Java versions. See Forge’s Java compatibility guidance. - A server folder: Choose a new, dedicated folder for the server files. Do not use your Minecraft client’s game folder.
- Matching versions: If you plan to use a modpack, check its server instructions before installing. The server and players’ clients need compatible Minecraft, Forge, and mod versions.
Minecraft 1.16.5 is an older release, published on January 14, 2021. Mojang’s release note says it is network-compatible with vanilla 1.16.4; that statement does not guarantee compatibility between Forge mods or modpacks.

How to install a Forge 1.16.5 server
- Get the Forge installer. Open the official Forge files page, select Minecraft 1.16.5, and download the installer for the build required by your modpack or mods. Forge offers Recommended and Latest builds and notes that Latest may be less stable. The right choice depends on the mods and clients you will use; do not assume that one build suits every setup.
- Install server files. Open the installer, select Install server, and choose the dedicated folder you prepared. This is different from installing Forge as a client profile. The installer workflow is also described in the Minecraft Wiki’s Forge server tutorial.
- Run the server once. Start it from its server folder using the generated launcher script or command. The first run creates server files and may stop before the server is ready.
- Review the EULA. Open
eula.txtin the server folder and read it. Changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to the terms, then save the file. Restart the server. Forge’s 1.16 documentation and Minecraft’s Java server guide describe this startup gate. - Confirm it starts. Wait for the server to finish starting, then connect from Minecraft on the same computer using
localhost. Forge documents this as a direct-connect test for its dedicated server workflow.
Add mods without breaking the server
Use mods built for Minecraft 1.16.5 and the Forge build installed on the server. Follow each mod or modpack’s server-specific directions: some projects require files or configuration beyond copying a mod into the server’s mods folder. Players also need the matching client-side setup when a mod requires it.
- Back up the world and server files before changing the mod list.
- Add or update mods in a controlled way so you can identify which change causes a startup error or crash.
- If the server or a player’s game fails, compare the exact Minecraft version, Forge build, and mod versions on both sides, then consult the modpack’s instructions.
There is no universal compatibility list for an unspecified set of mods. A mod’s Minecraft version alone is not enough to establish that it will work with a particular Forge build or with every other mod in the pack.

Let friends connect over the internet
A successful localhost test proves that the server runs on the host; it does not prove that people outside your home network can reach it. For remote players, Minecraft’s server guide notes that network configuration may be needed, including firewall settings. Java servers commonly use port 25565 by default.
- Keep the server running and confirm that local connections work.
- Check the host computer’s firewall and allow the server’s Java process or the relevant network traffic as appropriate for your system.
- If players outside your local network still cannot connect, review your router’s configuration and whether your internet service permits inbound connections. Exact steps vary by router, network, and ISP.
- Ask a remote player to test only after the server and network settings are in place. A successful local connection alone is not a remote-access test.
If you do not want to manage a home server or network configuration, hosted Minecraft servers are another route. Before choosing one, confirm that it supports Forge 1.16.5, lets you install the required mods, and provides the file and backup access you need.

Troubleshoot common startup and connection problems
The installer or server will not launch
Check that Java 8 is installed and that the terminal or generated script is using that runtime. If several Java versions are present, the version selected by your shell may differ from the one you expect. Read the error shown in the console before changing files.
The server stops during its first run
Look for eula.txt in the server folder and read it. Accepting the EULA is a deliberate choice, not a workaround for a crash. If the file is missing, verify that you launched the server from its installation folder and inspect the console output.

Mods cause a crash or version mismatch
Compare the precise Minecraft version, Forge build, and mod versions used by the server and clients. Follow the pack’s server setup instructions and restore a backup if a change has damaged the world or configuration.
Friends cannot connect
First confirm the server is running and that localhost works on the host. Then check firewall and router configuration. A blocked connection can be a network issue even when the server itself is functioning; the necessary fix depends on the network and ISP.
