How to Create a Microsoft Sticky Notes EXE Shortcut in Windows 10

The reliable way to put Sticky Notes on a Windows 10 desktop is to create a shortcut from the installed-apps folder, not to browse for a file named Microsoft.Notes.exe. Press Win+R, enter shell:AppsFolder, press Enter, right-click Sticky Notes, choose Create shortcut, and accept Windows’ offer to place the shortcut on the desktop. Windows creates a normal .lnk shortcut that continues to target the packaged app more safely than a version-specific path inside WindowsApps.

What you should create instead of an EXE path

Sticky Notes installed through Microsoft Store is a packaged Windows app. Its files are held in a protected package directory, and that directory can include a version number that changes when the app updates. A shortcut aimed directly at a path such as C:Program FilesWindowsApps... can therefore stop working after an update.

Windows provides an installed-apps view that knows how to launch packaged applications. Creating the shortcut from that view produces a standard Windows shortcut file, with the .lnk format used for desktop shortcuts. This keeps the launch method tied to the registered Sticky Notes app rather than to one particular package-version folder.

Microsoft’s MSIX guidance recommends an AppExecutionAlias, where one is available, instead of embedding a versioned package path. For a normal personal desktop, the simplest supported equivalent is the shortcut created from shell:AppsFolder. You do not need to identify the internal executable or change permissions on WindowsApps.

Create the Sticky Notes desktop shortcut

1. Open the installed-apps folder

  1. Sign in to the Windows 10 account that should receive the shortcut.
  2. Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
  3. Type shell:AppsFolder exactly, including the colon, and press Enter.

File Explorer opens a special folder containing applications registered for your account. This is different from browsing to a normal disk folder; it presents launchable apps even when their package files are stored in protected locations.

2. Find Sticky Notes

Scroll through the icons or type Sticky Notes when the folder has focus. Use the app entry named Sticky Notes, not a document, shortcut, or similarly named search result. If the entry is absent, Sticky Notes is not currently installed for that Windows account; use the installation steps in the troubleshooting section below.

3. Ask Windows to create the shortcut

  1. Right-click Sticky Notes.
  2. Select Create shortcut.
  3. Windows will report that it cannot create a shortcut in that location and ask whether it should place the shortcut on the desktop. Select Yes.

The resulting icon appears on the desktop as a regular shortcut. Windows may display a shortcut arrow on the icon; that is expected and distinguishes the link from an original application file.

4. Rename and test it

  1. Right-click the new desktop icon and choose Rename if you want a shorter label, such as Notes.
  2. Double-click the icon.
  3. Confirm that Sticky Notes opens and displays its notes list or a note window.

Renaming changes only the label shown on the desktop. Do not replace the shortcut’s target with a path copied from WindowsApps; doing so removes the update-resistant launch behavior you just created.

Where the shortcut is stored

For the current user, the desktop is normally located at C:Users<username>Desktop. The shortcut created by the AppsFolder procedure is a .lnk file in that user desktop location. You can move, copy, rename, or delete the link without uninstalling Sticky Notes or deleting the notes themselves.

If several people use the PC, repeat the procedure while signed in to each account that needs its own desktop icon. A shortcut placed on one user’s desktop does not automatically appear on another user’s desktop. An administrator can instead deploy a shortcut through a managed Start layout, described later.

Why you should not hard-code Microsoft.Notes.exe

Packaged applications do not expose a stable public EXE location

A Store-installed app is registered as a package. Its installation directory can contain publisher, architecture, and version components, and those components may change when Microsoft publishes an update. The protected WindowsApps directory is also not intended to be a routine launch location for end users.

What happens after an update

If a shortcut points to an old package directory, the old folder may no longer exist or may no longer contain the active registration. The icon can remain on the desktop while double-clicking it produces an error or does nothing. A shortcut created through shell:AppsFolder uses the app registration instead of a single versioned folder, so it is the correct first choice.

When an alias matters

Microsoft’s MSIX documentation describes an AppExecutionAlias as a way to avoid changing a shortcut every time an application is updated. An alias is a registered command name supplied by the package, when the package exposes one. You do not have to discover or manually construct that alias for the desktop procedure; AppsFolder handles the registered application entry for you.

Use the taskbar when a desktop icon is not necessary

For frequent access, Microsoft documents pinning Sticky Notes to the Windows taskbar. Launch Sticky Notes from Start, then right-click its taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar. The pinned icon remains available even when no note window is open.

Right-clicking the pinned icon exposes the notes list and the New note command. This can be faster than opening a desktop shortcut and then choosing a note, especially when you only need to capture one item. Taskbar pinning is per user, just like a shortcut on that user’s desktop.

Launch Sticky Notes from Start

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Sticky Notes.
  3. Select the Sticky Notes app from the results.

Start search is the fallback when you do not want a desktop icon. If Sticky Notes does not appear in the results, install it from Microsoft Store, then search again. This launch path is also useful for testing whether the app itself works when a desktop shortcut appears stale.

Desktop shortcut, taskbar pin, or Start: choose by use case

Method Best for Update durability Convenience Maintenance
AppsFolder desktop .lnk A visible icon on one user’s desktop Better than a versioned EXE path because it targets the registered app Double-click from the desktop Recreate it from shell:AppsFolder if the link ever becomes stale
Taskbar pin Frequent access and quick note creation Uses Windows’ registered app entry Always visible; context menu includes New note Unpin and pin again only if the app entry changes
Start search Occasional use or troubleshooting Uses the current installation registration Requires opening Start and typing the name Reinstall the app if it is missing
Direct versioned EXE path Not recommended for normal use Can break after a Store update May require browsing protected folders Requires finding and replacing the target after package changes

For most personal Windows 10 installations, create the AppsFolder shortcut and optionally pin Sticky Notes to the taskbar. The two shortcuts serve different purposes and can coexist.

Repair a shortcut that no longer opens Sticky Notes

Recreate the link from AppsFolder

  1. Delete the non-working desktop shortcut. Deleting a .lnk file does not remove the app or notes.
  2. Press Win+R, enter shell:AppsFolder, and press Enter.
  3. Right-click Sticky Notes, choose Create shortcut, and accept the desktop prompt.
  4. Open the new shortcut.

This is preferable to editing a target that contains a package version, processor architecture, or long folder name. If Sticky Notes opens from Start but not from the old icon, recreating the shortcut normally resolves the mismatch.

Test the app independently

Open Start and launch Sticky Notes by name. If it opens there, the installation is present and the desktop link is the likely problem. If it does not appear or will not launch from Start, continue with installation or account recovery rather than changing shortcut properties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Sticky Notes when it is missing

When Sticky Notes is absent from AppsFolder and Start, install Microsoft Sticky Notes from Microsoft Store. After installation completes, open Start and search for Sticky Notes once so Windows registers the app for the account. Then repeat the AppsFolder shortcut procedure.

If Microsoft Store itself is unavailable on a managed PC, contact the organization’s administrator. A local shortcut cannot launch an app that is not installed or registered for the current account.

If Sticky Notes did not start with Windows 10

A desktop shortcut does not automatically make Sticky Notes run at sign-in. If you expected notes to appear after Windows starts, open Start, search for Sticky Notes, and launch it manually. Microsoft documents this manual launch as the recovery step when the app is not already running.

Use the taskbar pin if your goal is quick access after sign-in. It keeps the app one click away without requiring a version-specific startup command.

Recover notes after uninstalling or resetting the app

If Sticky Notes was uninstalled, reinstall it from Microsoft Store. Microsoft states that notes can reappear after reinstalling and signing in with the same account used previously. This applies to notes synchronized with that account; do not assume that an unsigned local note will be recoverable.

Uninstalling or resetting without signing in can delete notes stored only locally. Before removing or resetting the app, open Sticky Notes and sign in if your notes need to follow you to the reinstalled copy. The desktop .lnk file is unrelated to note storage, so recreating it cannot restore notes that were deleted with the app data.

When a note seems to have disappeared

Sticky Notes cannot currently be kept permanently on top of other applications. A note window can therefore be hidden behind another window even though the app is still open.

  1. Click the Sticky Notes icon on the taskbar, if it is visible.
  2. Use the taskbar icon’s notes list to select the note you want.
  3. If the icon is not visible, open Sticky Notes from Start or the desktop shortcut and use the notes list.

Do not create multiple EXE shortcuts to keep a note visible; the visibility limitation is an app behavior, not a shortcut problem.

Managed Start layouts for organizations

Organizations deploying a standardized Windows 10 Start layout have two documented options. A layout can reference a shortcut file with DesktopApplicationLinkPath, or it can reference the app’s AUMID with DesktopApplicationID when the AUMID is known.

For a link-based deployment, the .lnk file must already exist at the specified location before the layout is applied. That is a deployment requirement, not a step for a home desktop. Administrators should generate or copy the link first, then apply the layout. An AUMID-based entry avoids storing a versioned EXE path and is appropriate when the organization’s image-management process already knows the packaged app identity.

For a single user’s desktop, the AppsFolder method is simpler and does not require XML layout configuration, elevated permissions, or knowledge of Sticky Notes’ internal package identity.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for a stable public EXE: Store apps may not provide one in a user-facing folder.
  • Copying a path from WindowsApps: The package directory can change after an update, and access is restricted.
  • Editing a working shortcut’s target: Replacing the registered target with a guessed filename can break launch behavior.
  • Assuming one user’s desktop covers everyone: Desktop shortcuts are normally per user.
  • Confusing a hidden note with a failed shortcut: Sticky Notes windows can sit behind other applications because they cannot be forced to stay on top.
  • Expecting a shortcut to restore deleted notes: The link launches the app; it does not contain note data.

Practical recommendation

Use shell:AppsFolder to create the desktop .lnk shortcut, then pin Sticky Notes to the taskbar if you frequently create notes. Avoid hard-coded Microsoft.Notes.exe or WindowsApps paths. If an icon stops working after an update, recreate it from AppsFolder; if Sticky Notes is missing entirely, reinstall it from Microsoft Store and sign in with the same account when synchronized notes matter.
