You can use OBS on a computer, a dedicated hardware encoder, or cloud playout. Before you begin, confirm that your church has the rights needed for every sermon, song, image, and other recording in the programme.
Choose how the sermons will play
YouTube Live receives a video feed from an encoder. YouTube Studio creates or schedules the broadcast; the encoder supplies the recorded programme. Choose a route based on who will maintain it, whether equipment can remain on site, and how you will handle interruptions and replays.

YouTube also identifies Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. YouTube notes that listed encoders are third-party products, not made by YouTube; evaluate any option for your church’s needs.
Prepare the channel, recordings, and replay plan
Activate live streaming early
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check that live streaming is available on the church’s channel well before launch day; an individual channel’s eligibility cannot be assumed.

Confirm content rights
Check that the church controls or has permission to broadcast every included recording and element, including sermon footage, worship music, lyrics, images, and embedded clips. The encoder and service setup does not establish what permissions apply to a particular church or piece of content. Do not assume a general church or streaming licence covers every use; verify the rights for the specific material.
Decide how viewers can watch and how you will preserve a replay
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule it in advance. Scheduling gives you a stream URL to share and lets viewers set reminders. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a complete replay, do not assume one longer nonstop session will produce it; retain separate recordings or schedule shorter sessions.

Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a new stream or schedule one for a future time. For a scheduled broadcast, share its URL with the congregation if useful.
- Choose the encoder route. For OBS, install and configure it on a suitable Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. For hardware or cloud playout, follow that provider’s current setup instructions.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a credential: limit access to the people and systems that need it, and avoid sharing it publicly.
- Configure the recorded programme to repeat. Add the sermon recording or playlist and set the chosen encoder or service to loop it. Playback and looping controls vary by product; test the exact setup rather than assuming a playlist will repeat unattended.
- Start the encoder feed and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube’s guidance says to wait for the preview; for a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room after the encoder feed arrives.
- Run a full test before relying on the stream. Check sermon order, transitions, audio presence and level, the YouTube preview, and who will respond if the feed drops. Test the church’s actual equipment and internet connection.
Run it locally with OBS
OBS is a no-cost software encoder option, but choosing it does not by itself solve unattended looping. The church is responsible for configuring playback, keeping the computer and connection available, monitoring operation, and recovering from interruptions. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder; the OBS homepage does not provide a complete unattended playlist recipe, so use the current OBS instructions for the playback method you select and test it end to end.
- Use a computer that can remain powered on for the planned broadcast and keep it connected to the internet.
- Set up the recorded sermon or playlist in OBS using a playback method appropriate to your media and repeat requirements.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS, start the feed, and confirm the preview in Live Control Room.
- Assign someone to check the programme and handle a stopped feed; a local encoder depends on the computer, power, software, and internet connection at the church.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is not available in Studio: If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of the planned broadcast and verify channel eligibility.
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is running and that the correct YouTube stream URL and key were entered. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream is scheduled but viewers cannot see it live: Confirm the encoder feed has reached the Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live there after the preview arrives.
- The sermon stops repeating: Check the playlist or playback configuration in the chosen encoder or service and test the full sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first.
- The feed drops: Check the church’s power and internet connection for a local setup, then restart or recover the encoder feed as needed. For cloud services, check the provider’s recovery status and current instructions; automatic recovery claims are provider-specific.
- A complete replay is missing: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Keep a separate recording or use shorter scheduled sessions when a complete replay matters.
Budget and operational checks
OBS is free software, but a local setup still requires a suitable computer, ongoing power and internet, configuration, and someone responsible for monitoring and recovery. Dedicated hardware adds a device purchase and a product-specific workflow. Cloud playout shifts the encoder operation off site, but brings recurring service costs, storage and upload considerations, provider terms, and credential-handling decisions.
