How to Create a Radio-Style YouTube Stream from Audio Files with FFmpeg

A practical guide to building a radio-style YouTube Live broadcast from audio files with FFmpeg, including compatible settings, testing and common fixes.

To create a radio-style YouTube Live broadcast from audio files, prepare a compatible audio sequence, add a still image or other video layer, then use FFmpeg to encode and send it to YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingest using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test privately or unlisted before going public. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your files, installed build and chosen visual treatment, so there is no reliable one-line command for every setup.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible and configured for live streaming. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance; availability can depend on the channel and account.
  • FFmpeg installed with the encoders and protocols needed for your chosen output. Builds differ, so check your local build rather than assuming every installation supports the same options.
  • Audio files you have permission to use, a decision about whether the sequence should repeat, and a visual layer if the broadcast is to include video.
  • A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the complete audio-and-video stream.

FFmpeg handles the media encoding and transmission. YouTube provides the live event and ingest credentials; the playlist, filters and output settings must fit your media and FFmpeg version.

Prepare your audio sequence and visual

Choose a finite playlist or a repeating program

Decide whether the broadcast should play through once or continue by repeating. Inspect the audio files first: differences in codecs, sample rates, channel layouts or other stream properties can affect how they can be joined. FFmpeg’s documentation covers the available formats and methods, but the suitable approach depends on the inputs; see the FFmpeg documentation before choosing a concat demuxer, filter or re-encoding workflow.

If the files are not compatible for direct joining, convert or re-encode them to a consistent format before building the sequence. Do not assume that one concat command will work unchanged for every mix of files. Confirm the result by playing the prepared sequence locally, listening for gaps, clipping, silence or abrupt level changes, and checking that the intended order and repeat behavior are correct.

Decide what viewers will see

A radio-style broadcast can pair the audio with a still image, a simple loop or another visual layer. Audio alone does not provide a video feed: if your live output needs video, explicitly configure a video source or filter and choose a resolution and frame rate. Verify the specific still-image or filter syntax against your installed FFmpeg version and confirm that the resulting picture behaves as intended throughout playback.

Set up the YouTube live event and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live event in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
  2. Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key shown for the event. Configure both as FFmpeg’s destination details; the URL identifies the ingest endpoint and the key identifies the stream.
  3. Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, source repository or publicly shared log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  4. Keep the credential out of command histories and logs where practical. Use a local, private configuration method appropriate to your operating system and FFmpeg workflow. Any example should use a placeholder such as YOUR_STREAM_KEY, never an actual key.

Choose compatible FFmpeg output settings

YouTube’s published recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. The guidance specifies CBR encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps among its advanced recommendations. See the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the bitrate appropriate to your selected codec, resolution and frame rate; a single generic video bitrate is not suitable for every combination.

Design the FFmpeg command to do the following, using options supported by your installed build:

  • Read the selected audio sequence and the visual source, if you use one.
  • Map the intended audio and video streams explicitly so the output contains the program you expect.
  • Encode audio to a supported live audio codec such as AAC, and video to a supported choice such as H.264 if your build and workflow use it.
  • Set CBR, the keyframe interval, frame rate, resolution and bitrate to match YouTube’s guidance for that output format.
  • Send the output over RTMP or RTMPS to the ingest URL and key supplied for the event.

Check the installed encoders and protocol support before troubleshooting a command that fails. FFmpeg documents output formats and supported protocols in its main documentation and protocol documentation. These references are version-dependent; confirm syntax against your installed version and files rather than copying an unverified universal command.

Test, start and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start with a private or unlisted event and send the FFmpeg output to its ingest destination.
  2. Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the audio is present and stable, the visual layer is correct, and stream health is acceptable before making the event public.
  3. Check that your available upload bandwidth has headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends a margin of 20% beyond the total stream bitrate; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a shared or unstable connection will stay up. Its streaming tips cover network preparation and testing.
  4. While live, monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room. If the feed becomes unstable, check both the connection and encoder output; changing encoding settings will not repair an unreliable network.
  5. When finished, stop FFmpeg cleanly and confirm in Studio that the live event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived.

YouTube’s live streaming tips also cover preparing and monitoring a broadcast. Test before an event rather than relying on an untested command for a public stream.

Copyright, music rights and reused content

Use only audio and visuals you own or are licensed to broadcast on YouTube Live. Owning a recording or having permission to download a file does not necessarily grant live-streaming or public-performance rights. YouTube’s copyright systems and policies can affect a stream even when FFmpeg is transmitting it correctly. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel rules, and confirm the rights for each track and visual before broadcasting.

A continuous stream made from prerecorded material is not automatically a safe or eligible route to monetization. Copyright permission and YouTube’s monetization rules are separate questions; repetitive or reused material may raise issues under those rules. Check the policies applicable to your channel rather than treating a successful test stream as confirmation that the content can be monetized.

Troubleshooting common failures

What you see Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg rejects an option, encoder or protocol The installed build may not include the requested encoder or protocol, or the syntax may not match that FFmpeg version. Inspect the build’s available encoders and protocol support, then check the option against the FFmpeg documentation for your version.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview The ingest URL or key may be wrong, the event may not be configured as expected, or the output may not be reaching YouTube. Verify the event’s current URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm that FFmpeg is sending to them, and check for encoder or connection errors. Do not share the key while seeking help.
Audio is missing or the output has the wrong streams The intended audio stream may not be mapped, the selected input may not be the one being read, or the output codec settings may be incompatible. Check the input streams and explicit mapping, then verify the resulting audio locally and in the Live Control Room preview.
Audio cuts out, shifts or fails when tracks change Input files may have incompatible properties or the sequence may have been joined with an unsuitable method. Inspect the files, make their relevant properties consistent where necessary, and choose an appropriate concat or filter-and-encode method for those inputs.
The live picture is blank, frozen or incorrect The video source or filter may be missing, mapped incorrectly or configured differently than expected. Set an explicit visual source, resolution and frame rate, then test the full output before going public.
Stream health is poor or the feed drops Upload capacity, connection stability or output bitrate may be inadequate. Compare available upload capacity with the total stream bitrate, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and use a more stable connection or a bitrate appropriate to the selected output.
YouTube flags or interrupts the broadcast Content rights, channel rules or live-stream settings may be involved, rather than an FFmpeg encoding fault. Review the notice in Studio, confirm rights to the material and check the relevant YouTube policies and event settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream but you do not want a computer or home connection running it, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the material in the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera or stream to other platforms.
