To create a redundant GlusterFS pool, prepare at least two Gluster servers, start glusterd on every node, join the servers to a trusted storage pool, create one brick directory per participating server, and create a volume with replica 2 or replica 3. Start the volume, mount it from a GlusterFS-capable client, and verify that test files appear on every replica brick. Replica members must be placed on different servers or failure domains; otherwise a single host failure can remove every copy.

What a redundant GlusterFS pool does
GlusterFS combines storage directories called bricks into a logical volume. A trusted storage pool is the group of Gluster servers that know and trust one another. A volume is a logical collection of those bricks, and clients access the volume through GlusterFS rather than mounting an individual brick directly.

A replicated volume stores each file on multiple bricks. With replica 2, GlusterFS keeps two copies; with replica 3, it keeps three. This protects availability when a brick or its host fails, provided the copies are on separate failure domains. Replication is not a backup: accidental deletion, corruption, ransomware, and configuration mistakes can be reproduced on every copy, so retain an independent backup system.
Distributed-replicated volumes combine distribution and replication. Files are distributed across replica sets, allowing capacity to grow beyond a single mirrored set while retaining the selected number of copies. The brick count must be divisible by the replica count, and the order of brick arguments determines which bricks belong to each replica set.

Choose the volume layout before installing
| Layout | Use it when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Replicated (replica N) |
High availability and reliability are the priority and the data fits within mirrored capacity. | Usable capacity is approximately one replica set’s capacity, while every file has N copies. |
| Distributed replicated | You need to scale capacity while retaining replica protection. | Brick count and brick ordering are design constraints; every replica set still needs members on separate peers. |
| Dispersed | You want erasure-code-style protection and better space efficiency than full mirroring. | It requires at least three bricks, and redundancy and failure tolerance are selected when the volume is created. |
For a first redundant pool, a three-server replica 3 volume is easy to reason about. A two-server replica 2 volume is also valid, but it has only two copies and offers no third host to maintain service while one server is unavailable. Choose a replica count based on the failures you need to tolerate and the capacity you can dedicate to copies.
Plan servers, failure domains, and capacity
Use separate peers for replica members
Keep each member of a replica set on a different server. If two members of a replica set are on the same host, a failure of that host can remove multiple copies at once. The same principle applies to larger failure domains: separate hosts are the minimum; separate racks, power circuits, or sites may be appropriate for your environment, but the documented Gluster procedure establishes host-level separation.
Make the brick count fit the replica count
For a distributed-replicated volume, the total number of bricks must be a multiple of the replica count. A six-brick volume with replica 3 forms two three-brick replica sets. A four-brick volume with replica 2 forms two two-brick sets. Plan future expansion in complete replica-sized groups; adding a number of bricks that is not a multiple of the replica count is not a valid layout.
Decide what each disk is for
The Gluster quick-start example separates the storage disk from the operating-system disk. Use a filesystem mounted specifically for brick data, and keep the host’s system filesystem out of the data path. Synchronize time on all servers before joining them. Hostnames must resolve consistently between nodes, because peer probing and client mounts use those names.
Prepare the storage and install GlusterFS
Repeat the preparation on every server that will host a brick. The following sequence is the documented quick-start pattern using XFS and /dev/sdb1:
mkfs.xfs -i size=512 /dev/sdb1
mkdir -p /data/brick1
echo '/dev/sdb1 /data/brick1 xfs defaults 1 2' >> /etc/fstab
mount -a && mount
yum install glusterfs-server
service glusterd start
service glusterd status
The package and service commands in that example come from a Fedora-era quick-start guide. Package names, service management, repository setup, and supported filesystems vary by distribution and release, so use the current installation instructions for the Linux distribution you are deploying. The important outcomes are the same: a mounted filesystem dedicated to brick data and a running glusterd daemon on every participating server.

- Start and check
glusterdon every node before attempting peer probes. - Configure firewalls so Gluster cluster communication is allowed between the servers and from approved clients.
Join the servers into a trusted storage pool
Choose one node as the administration point and probe the other servers from it. For a three-node example:
gluster peer probe server2
gluster peer probe server3
Check the result:
gluster peer status
The output should show the expected peers and their connection state. A trusted storage pool is not merely a list of IP addresses: hostname resolution, running glusterd daemons, and network connectivity are all required.
If hostname identity matters in your environment, the quick-start guidance recommends probing the first server back from another node. For example, after probing server2 and server3 from server1, run a probe from another server for server1 and then recheck peer status. This can expose inconsistent names or resolution before you create a volume.
If peer probing fails
- Name resolution error: verify that every server resolves the names used in the commands, in both directions where required by your environment. Use the same canonical names when creating bricks and mounting.
- Connection or timeout error: check that
glusterdis running on the target and that firewalls permit Gluster management and data communication. - Unexpected peer state: run
gluster peer statuson the administration node and inspect the daemon state on the node that was probed before repeating the operation.
Create a dedicated brick directory on each server
Do not use the root of the mounted filesystem as a brick. Create a subdirectory below it, and use a matching path on each participating server:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mkdir -p /data/brick1/gv0
Run this on every server that will provide a brick. The directory must exist on the filesystem mounted at /data/brick1; otherwise a path that looks correct may actually be on the operating-system disk.
For a replica set, map one brick to each separate peer. In a distributed-replicated design, make a complete map before issuing the create command. The ordering of brick arguments is significant: consecutive brick arguments form a replica set. Place one brick from each server in the first set, then one brick from each server in the second set, and continue that pattern.

Create a replica-2 or replica-3 volume
Three-way replication
With three servers and one brick on each, create a three-copy volume:
gluster volume create gv0 replica 3
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
server3:/data/brick1/gv0
These three consecutive bricks constitute one replica set. Keep them on different peers, as shown.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Two-way replication
For two servers, use two bricks on separate servers:
gluster volume create gv0 replica 2
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
The command creates the volume definition; it does not make the volume available to clients yet. You must start it in the next step.
Distributed replication with multiple sets
Suppose you have six bricks and want replica 3. List the first brick from three separate servers first, followed by the second brick from those servers:
gluster volume create gv0 replica 3
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
server3:/data/brick1/gv0
server1:/data/brick2/gv0
server2:/data/brick2/gv0
server3:/data/brick2/gv0
The first three arguments form one replica set and the next three form another. The exact paths are examples; create each directory on its corresponding mounted filesystem first. Before running the command, verify both that the brick count is divisible by three and that no replica set places multiple members on one host.

Start and inspect the volume
Start the newly created volume:
gluster volume start gv0
Inspect its definition and runtime state:
gluster volume info gv0
gluster volume status gv0
gluster volume info shows the volume type, brick count, transport information, and whether it is started. Clients should mount only after the output reports Status: Started. gluster volume status checks the online volume processes.
When the volume will not start
- Run
gluster volume info gv0and confirm the brick paths and replica count match the plan. - Run
gluster peer statusto ensure every brick host is still connected to the trusted pool. - Run
gluster volume status gv0to identify offline volume processes. - Inspect
/var/log/glusterfs/glusterd.logon the relevant nodes for the daemon’s error details.
Do not attempt to solve a start failure by mounting the brick directory directly. A brick is an internal volume component; clients should use the Gluster volume endpoint.
Mount the volume from a client
The client needs GlusterFS support installed. Create a mount point and mount the volume through one of the Gluster servers:
mkdir -p /mnt/gluster-test
mount -t glusterfs server1:/gv0 /mnt/gluster-test
The source uses the server name followed by the volume name, not a brick path. If the mount fails, first confirm that the volume reports Status: Started, that the client can resolve server1, and that firewall rules permit the client-to-cluster connection. Then use gluster volume status gv0 and the server logs to distinguish a client-side connectivity problem from an offline brick process.
Validate that replication is really working
A successful mount alone does not prove that every replica brick contains the expected data. Write test data through the mounted path, read it back, and inspect the corresponding brick directories on each replica host.
printf 'Gluster replication testn' > /mnt/gluster-test/replication-check.txt
cat /mnt/gluster-test/replication-check.txt
On each server that hosts a replica brick, check for the file below the brick directory:

ls -l /data/brick1/gv0/replication-check.txt
cat /data/brick1/gv0/replication-check.txt
The official quick-start example copies 100 files through the mounted volume and then checks the brick directories on every server. You can use the same pattern for a broader smoke test:
mkdir -p /tmp/gluster-input
for n in $(seq 1 100); do printf 'file %sn' "$n" > "/tmp/gluster-input/file-$n.txt"; done
cp /tmp/gluster-input/file-*.txt /mnt/gluster-test/
find /mnt/gluster-test -maxdepth 1 -type f | wc -l
The count and contents visible through the mount should match the files you wrote. Check the expected paths on every brick in the relevant replica set. This 100-file count is a validation example, not a performance benchmark or a guarantee about throughput.

- The file is absent from one brick: check that you inspected the correct brick path and that the corresponding brick process is online with
gluster volume status gv0. - The mount sees no files: confirm that the files were written below
/mnt/gluster-test, not to a different local directory, and verify the volume’s started state. - Different content appears on replicas: stop treating the result as a successful deployment; preserve the evidence, review peer and volume status, and inspect the Gluster logs before additional writes.
Designing distributed-replicated growth
Replication determines how many copies each file has; distribution determines which replica set receives a file. As you add capacity, add bricks in complete groups equal to the replica count. For replica 2, add two appropriately placed bricks at a time; for replica 3, add three. Each new group must preserve the failure-domain rule, with its members on separate peers.
Record the intended brick order before every expansion. Since consecutive brick arguments define replica-set membership, an order that accidentally puts two bricks from one server in the same set can undermine host-level redundancy even if the total brick count is mathematically valid.
Operational checks to keep the pool healthy
gluster peer statusconfirms trusted-pool membership and peer connection state.gluster volume info gv0confirms the volume type, brick count, transport information, and started state.gluster volume status gv0checks whether the volume processes are online./var/log/glusterfs/glusterd.logprovides daemon-level detail when a volume does not start or a peer operation fails.
Keep the storage filesystem mounted consistently, monitor peer and brick status, and test recovery procedures rather than assuming that replication removes every operational risk. A replicated volume improves availability; it does not supply backup retention or protection from changes made through the live filesystem.
Production hardening considerations
Before placing important data on the pool, document the server names, brick paths, replica layout, failure domains, and the exact brick order. Verify that administrators know which commands inspect the pool and which paths are internal bricks. Schedule independent backups and test restoring files from them.
The Tool Desk

Managed Linux or GlusterFS support can help with those activities when an in-house team cannot continuously maintain the cluster, but the volume still needs a documented ownership and recovery process.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with only one server: a single brick cannot provide replica redundancy. Use at least two servers for
replica 2; three servers are a practical example forreplica 3. - Putting all replica bricks on one host: this defeats host-level protection and may produce a warning or refusal.
- Using the filesystem root as a brick: create a dedicated subdirectory such as
/data/brick1/gv0. - Ignoring brick order: in distributed-replicated volumes, consecutive brick arguments define replica sets.
- Using a non-multiple brick count: distributed-replicated layouts require the total to be divisible by the replica count.
- Mounting before starting the volume: confirm
Status: Startedfirst. - Calling replication a backup: maintain an independent backup strategy for deletion, corruption, ransomware, and configuration errors.
- Assuming an example command is universal: the documented
yumandservicesequence is Fedora-era; adapt installation and service commands to the target distribution and release.
End-to-end checklist
- Choose the replica count and decide whether a simple replicated or distributed-replicated layout fits the required capacity.
- Assign replica members to separate servers or failure domains, and plan brick order before creating the volume.
- Synchronize server time, prepare a dedicated mounted filesystem, and keep storage separate from the operating-system disk where practical.
- Install GlusterFS server components and verify that
glusterdis running on every node. - Confirm hostname resolution and firewall connectivity between nodes.
- Probe peers and verify the trusted pool with
gluster peer status. - Create a subdirectory below the mounted brick filesystem on every participating server.
- Create the volume with
replica 2orreplica 3; for distributed replication, use a brick count divisible by the replica count and preserve set ordering. - Start the volume and confirm
Status: Startedwithgluster volume info. - Check processes with
gluster volume status, mount from a GlusterFS-capable client, write test files, and verify the expected replicas on the brick paths. - Document independent backups, monitoring, upgrade ownership, and recovery procedures before production use.
