How to Create a Seamless Loop for YouTube Live with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For one prerecorded file, FFmpeg can repeat the input indefinitely and send it to YouTube Live with -stream_loop -1 and -re. Those options keep playback going at a live-like pace; they do not repair a bad edit. A genuinely smooth loop depends on the video and audio joining cleanly at the end and beginning.

What “seamless” means in a YouTube Live loop

There are two separate things to get right: continuous delivery to YouTube and a natural-looking, natural-sounding repeat. FFmpeg’s loop option handles repeating the input. It does not blend the last frame or audio sample into the first, remove a flash or silence, or correct a poorly edited boundary.

Watch and listen across the end-to-start join before streaming. If the transition is abrupt, edit, trim, or crossfade the source in a suitable production workflow, render a new file, and inspect that render. The right edit depends on the footage, sound, frame rate, and whether the clip’s exact duration needs to be preserved.

Prepare the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, prepare a live stream and obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the encoder. The exact labels can change; use the URL and key shown for the stream you intend to send.

Loop one file with FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg and make sure the input file is accessible to the machine running it. Replace input.mp4 and the output placeholder below. The command is a starting template, not a tested universal preset:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"
  • -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite repetition of the input. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i.
  • -re reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. It is commonly used when sending file input as a live-style stream.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a? selects audio if present; the question mark makes that mapping optional. If the file has no audio, decide whether silence or a separate audio source is appropriate for your stream.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode video and audio. These are illustrative choices; YouTube also lists other supported ingest codecs. Choose settings for your actual source, available encoding capacity, upload connection, and YouTube’s current guidance.
  • The example does not set a video bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate. Set those deliberately if you need to scale or control the output, and verify them against YouTube’s current table rather than treating a bitrate as suitable for every mode.

When FFmpeg starts, check that it reports output progress and that the stream appears in YouTube’s live preview. Let the file reach its end during testing so you can inspect the repeat point, not just the first minutes.

Choose bitrate and keyframe settings for the output

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 table gives these examples:

Output mode Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 modes, not guarantees of quality or a substitute for the current table. Its values can change. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult the live encoder settings page linked above.

For a 30 fps output, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to 60 frames; at 60 fps, it corresponds to 120. If you configure the encoder manually, keep the interval aligned with the output frame rate and verify the result and stream health. A bitrate setting alone does not determine whether your connection or encoder can sustain the stream.

Loop a playlist of multiple files

For compatible files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join inputs without re-encoding. It expects the files to have the same streams and compatible properties; mismatches or inaccurate duration metadata can introduce timestamp gaps or artifacts. For files that need normalization or re-encoding, the FFmpeg FAQ recommends considering the concat filter instead.

Use the concat demuxer when the inputs are compatible

  1. Create a trusted text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line:

    file '/media/part1.mp4'
    file '/media/part2.mp4'
  2. Pass the playlist to FFmpeg as a concat input, then loop that input:

    ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
      -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
      -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
      -c:a aac -b:a 128k
      -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"
  3. Use -safe 0 only with a playlist you trust: it allows paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe subset. Verify the playlist and every referenced path before running it.

  4. Test transitions between each listed file and from the final file back to the first. A technically continuous playlist can still have visible or audible cuts.

Use a filter workflow when files need re-encoding

If clips differ in codec, time base, stream layout, or other relevant properties, normalize them or use the concat filter and re-encode. The concat demuxer is not a general-purpose repair tool for incompatible inputs. See the FFmpeg documentation for its concat demuxer requirements and duration caveats, and the FFmpeg FAQ for the demuxer-versus-filter distinction. Loop the resulting compatible input or rendered file as appropriate for your installed FFmpeg build.

Test and troubleshoot before depending on the stream

YouTube Help advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

  • FFmpeg stops or the stream ends at the file boundary: Confirm that -stream_loop -1 is before the relevant -i, and that FFmpeg remains running. Watch output timestamps and frame progress through a full repeat.
  • The stream has no audio: Check whether the input contains an audio stream and whether your mapping selects it. The optional -map 0:a? does not create audio when none exists; add an intentional source or configure the output for the stream you need.
  • A playlist has a gap, jump, or artifacts: Check that all files have compatible streams and properties, and that their duration metadata is accurate. Normalize or re-encode incompatible clips, or use the concat filter where re-encoding is needed.
  • The repeat point looks or sounds abrupt: Inspect the last and first frames and listen across the audio boundary. A hard cut, flash, silence, transient, or timing mismatch must be addressed in the media edit; loop flags do not correct it.
  • YouTube reports configuration or stream-health problems: Compare codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe cadence with the current encoder guidance for the selected output mode. Review Live Control Room messages and YouTube’s Live API health-status message reference for configuration issue categories.
  • The stream does not sustain the selected output: Check that the encoder can keep up and the upload connection can carry the configured stream. Test the actual file and destination before scheduling or relying on a long-running broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to continue without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.

  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card. One free day is available per account.
  • Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly options are also available; billing can be cancelled any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.

Start your free StreamNeo day.

Costs and practical trade-offs

Running FFmpeg yourself means you supply the computer, storage, encoder capacity, and reliable upload connection for the full broadcast. Its cost depends on the hardware and connection you already have, electricity, and how long the stream runs; no universal figure follows from the FFmpeg workflow. A cloud service trades that local setup and power dependence for a per-slot charge. Compare the runtime you need, how much control you want over encoding and edits, and whether the source needs preprocessing before choosing.

For checking a file before upload, StreamNeo provides an upload-time calculator, a cloud vs PC cost calculator, and a copyright safety checklist.
