1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe quickest way to place one or two videos on a WordPress page is to add a YouTube Embed block (or another supported Embed block) and paste each video URL. For a browsable collection with thumbnails, columns, albums, filters, or lightbox playback, use a dedicated video-gallery block or plugin. In every case, confirm that each video permits embedding and check the published layout on a phone before sharing the page.

The video remains on the provider’s site; your page stores a link and displays the provider’s player.
- The core Video block: Best when you need to upload a video file, select one from the Media Library, or insert a supported video URL.
- A gallery block or plugin: Best for a grid of thumbnails, albums, categories, filters, captions, or lightbox playback.
WordPress explains the distinction clearly: “When you are embedding content, you don’t need to upload the content to your WordPress site.” Read the full explanation in the WordPress Embeds documentation.
| Route | What it handles | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Embed block | A supported YouTube URL in the block editor | One video, a short sequence, a playlist URL, or YouTube Live |
| Core Video block | Uploaded files, Media Library files, and supported video URLs | A self-hosted clip that you control in WordPress |
| Video Gallery Block | Responsive YouTube and Vimeo galleries, albums, filters, thumbnails, captions, and lightbox popups in its free listing | A Gutenberg gallery without building a layout manually |
| FooGallery | Video galleries in PRO Expert and PRO Commerce; listed sources include YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Vimeo, and self-hosted video | A gallery system that also supports image galleries |
| Envira Videos Addon | Self-hosted MP4, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, VideoPress, and DailyMotion links; playlist galleries require a YouTube API key | A gallery workflow based on Envira’s addon |

Prepare your videos before adding them
Collect the exact URLs
Copy the normal watch URL from the provider rather than a shortened link copied from an application. A YouTube playlist URL can display the first video with playlist navigation when WordPress recognizes it. The YouTube block documentation also lists YouTube Live URLs as supported.
Check embedding permissions
A video can be public and still refuse to play on another site. WordPress states: “The publisher needs to ‘Allow Embedding’ in the settings of the video and some publishers restrict the countries, where videos can be shared.” If the owner has disabled embedding or limited the video’s countries, changing your WordPress block will not fix the restriction. Ask the owner to enable embedding or use a different video.

Decide who hosts the file
An external embed does not copy the video into your Media Library. A self-hosted file does. That choice affects which block you use and how much control you have over the player. The documented gallery options accept a mixture of external providers and, depending on the plugin, self-hosted video, so you can choose per project rather than treating a gallery plugin as a requirement to buy a separate host.
Have editor access and a test page
You need permission to edit the target page or post. For a site-wide design change, create a draft or staging page first. Keep one unpublished page for testing a new provider, playlist, or plugin update so a broken embed does not replace a working public gallery.

Embed a single YouTube video with WordPress
This is the simplest route when visitors only need a player, not a browsable catalog.
- Copy the video URL. Open the video on YouTube and copy its URL.
- Open the editor. In WordPress, go to Pages or Posts, open an existing item or choose Add New, and place the cursor where the player should appear.
- Insert the block. Select the plus button, search for YouTube, and choose the YouTube Embed block. You can also use a supported generic Embed block.
- Paste and embed. Paste the URL into the field and select Embed. WordPress retrieves the provider player rather than uploading a copy of the file.
- Set alignment if needed. Use the block toolbar for the alignment options your theme exposes. Wide and full-width alignment depend on the active theme, as noted in the official YouTube embed guide.
- Preview the public page. Select Preview and test the player at desktop and narrow/mobile widths. Check that the thumbnail, controls, captions, and surrounding text do not overflow.
- Publish or update. Publish the page only after the front-end preview works while logged out or in a private browser window.
To add several individual videos this way, repeat the block for each URL. That produces a vertical sequence, not a thumbnail grid with category controls. Once visitors need to browse a collection, switch to a gallery block or plugin rather than adding dozens of separate embeds.

Build a multi-video gallery in Gutenberg
The Video Gallery Block listing describes a Gutenberg workflow for YouTube and Vimeo URLs. The free listing includes responsive galleries, albums, filters, thumbnails, captions, and lightbox popups. Its September 7, 2026 release notes for version 1.5.0 mention bulk URL import and a thumbnail-shape option; because release features are version-specific, verify that those controls are present in the version installed on your site.
- Install the block. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Video Gallery Block, confirm the listing and author, then install and activate it. If you received a plugin ZIP, use Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin instead.
- Create or edit the page. Go to Pages > Add New or open the page that will contain the collection. Add an introductory heading so visitors understand what the videos cover.
- Insert the gallery block. Select the plus button, search for Video Gallery Block, and insert it into the page.
- Add video URLs. Enter the YouTube or Vimeo URLs supplied by the video owners. If your installed version exposes bulk import, use it to add a prepared list, then inspect every imported item for the correct title and thumbnail.
- Choose the layout. Set the number of columns, thumbnail shape, spacing, and any responsive settings shown by the block. Use fewer columns at narrow widths so thumbnails remain large enough to identify.
- Organize the collection. Create albums or categories when visitors need to narrow a long list. Add filters only when the labels are meaningful; a filter with one item creates extra clicks without helping navigation.
- Configure playback. Choose in-gallery playback or the lightbox option offered by the block. Add captions or titles that tell visitors what each video contains instead of relying on an unlabeled thumbnail.
- Preview at several widths. Use the editor’s preview controls and then open the actual page in a desktop browser and a phone-sized viewport. Test opening a thumbnail, closing the lightbox, changing filters, and returning to the page.
- Publish and retest while logged out. Caching, privacy settings, or a security plugin can affect visitors differently from administrators. Confirm the gallery in a private browser window after publishing.

FooGallery for provider variety or self-hosted video
The FooGallery WordPress.org listing places video-gallery support in PRO Expert and PRO Commerce. It lists YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Vimeo, and self-hosted videos as sources. This is a useful fit when your requirements include those source types and you are prepared to use the relevant paid edition. Confirm the current plan’s feature matrix before building a layout around a specific source.
Envira Gallery with the Videos Addon
Envira’s Videos Addon documentation describes adding video links, setting video options, and publishing a gallery. The documented sources include self-hosted MP4, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, VideoPress, and DailyMotion. The guide also states that YouTube playlist galleries require an API key.
Recommended Free Tools
- Install and activate Envira Gallery and its Videos Addon according to the edition you own.
- Open the gallery editor and add a video item using its URL or self-hosted MP4 option.
- Set the video’s title, thumbnail, and playback options exposed by the addon.
- Repeat for the remaining videos, then insert the finished gallery into the WordPress page using the method the addon provides.
- If you are importing a YouTube playlist, create or supply the required YouTube API key before expecting playlist items to populate.
- Preview the published page on desktop and mobile, then test each item and the lightbox controls.
Do not choose among these plugins on name alone. Compare the editor you use, the providers you need, whether self-hosted files are required, album and filtering behavior, playlist support, lightbox versus in-gallery playback, and the current plan cost shown by the publisher.
Use WordPress’s core Video block for an uploaded file
The core Video block is separate from the image-oriented Gallery block. WordPress documents it as a way to upload a video, choose a file already in the Media Library, or insert a supported URL. Read the Video block documentation before selecting this route.

- Open the page or post in the block editor.
- Select the plus button and insert Video.
- Choose Upload to add a file, Media Library to reuse one already stored, or the URL option when your installation accepts the provider link.
- Use the block settings available in your WordPress version for controls, autoplay, loop, muted playback, poster image, and preload behavior.
- Save a draft and test playback on the front end, including a browser that is not logged into WordPress.
This block creates a player, not automatically a catalog. To present several uploaded videos as a browsable grid, use a gallery plugin that explicitly supports self-hosted video or build a custom layout with separate Video blocks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix the most common embed and gallery failures
The block shows an error instead of the player
- Re-copy the canonical video URL and paste it again; an incomplete or private link can fail recognition.
- Open the video on its provider while logged out. If it is private, age-restricted, removed, or unavailable in your country, the WordPress page cannot make it public.
- Ask the publisher to check the video’s Allow Embedding setting. A site administrator cannot override that provider-side permission.
- Check whether the publisher restricts countries. WordPress specifically documents country restrictions as a possible reason an embed will not play.
- Temporarily test the URL in a clean draft page without caching or optimization changes. If it works there, add plugins or theme customizations back one at a time to identify the conflict.
The thumbnail appears, but playback is blocked
Test the published URL rather than only the editor preview. Cookie-consent, firewall, security, or content-blocking settings can interfere with third-party players. Make sure your privacy notice explains that an embedded YouTube player shares non-personal identifying viewing data with YouTube and the video publisher, as described in the YouTube embed documentation. Follow your site’s legal and consent requirements before loading third-party media.
A playlist displays only one video
A normal video URL is not the same as a playlist URL. Use the playlist URL when you want playlist navigation in the YouTube embed block. For an Envira playlist gallery, configure the required YouTube API key. If you need a filtered catalog rather than provider-managed playlist navigation, create albums or categories in the gallery plugin instead.
The gallery is too wide or unusable on a phone
- Reduce the desktop column count and enable the plugin’s responsive settings where available.
- Use a thumbnail ratio that keeps faces, game scenes, or important text visible.
- Open the lightbox and close it with both its visible control and the browser’s back behavior if supported.
- Check that captions wrap, filter controls can be tapped, and no horizontal scrolling appears.
- Retest after your theme or gallery plugin updates; a responsive setting can change between versions.
Videos are missing after a plugin update
Check the plugin’s current listing and changelog, then open the gallery editor and inspect one affected item. Provider APIs, URL formats, and plan entitlements can change. Keep a written export of your video URLs and category labels so you can rebuild a gallery if an update requires a different field.

Design a gallery visitors can actually browse
Give every item a useful label
Use concise titles that identify the game, level, feature, or lesson shown. A grid of indistinguishable play icons forces visitors to open items at random. Captions are especially valuable when thumbnails are visually similar.
Keep categories stable
Use categories that reflect how visitors ask for content, such as platform, game, series, or tutorial type. Avoid creating a new filter for every video. If your collection is short, an unfiltered grid is faster to scan than a complex taxonomy.
Choose playback deliberately
In-gallery playback keeps visitors on the page; a lightbox emphasizes the selected video and hides surrounding content while it plays. Pick one behavior and test keyboard focus, close controls, and return-to-gallery behavior before publishing.
Respect provider ownership and privacy
Embedding does not transfer ownership of the video to your site. Keep attribution or descriptions required by the publisher, and remove an item when its owner withdraws permission. Because external players can transmit viewing information, explain that behavior in your site’s privacy documentation where applicable.
Maintain the gallery after it is published
- Keep the original provider URL, title, category, and thumbnail choice in a simple content inventory.
- Review the front-end gallery when a video is deleted, made private, or moved to a new URL.
- Test one item from each provider after WordPress, your theme, or the gallery plugin updates.
- Verify filters, albums, lightboxes, and mobile layout after design changes.
- Check the current plugin listing before relying on a newly advertised feature. The Video Gallery Block listing, for example, records version-specific changes such as the September 7, 2026 version 1.5.0 release.
Which approach should you use?
Use the YouTube Embed block when you need a small number of external videos and no catalog controls. Use the core Video block when you need to upload or manage a file in WordPress. Use Video Gallery Block when a Gutenberg-native YouTube/Vimeo grid with albums, filters, captions, thumbnails, or lightbox playback meets the project. Consider FooGallery or Envira when their documented provider support, self-hosted options, playlist behavior, or broader gallery workflow matches your requirements and current plan.
Whichever route you choose, verify embedding permission, preserve the original URLs, preview the public page on mobile, and retest after updates. Those checks prevent most failures without requiring you to upload every external video to WordPress.
