Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe reliable way to share a Windows host folder with a VirtualBox Windows guest is to install Guest Additions, add the host directory under Settings → Shared Folders, and then open the share through File Explorer or map it with net use. Guest Additions supplies the integration that makes the host directory visible; the shared-folder entry supplies its guest-facing name and access rules.
What a VirtualBox shared folder does
A VirtualBox shared folder exposes an existing directory on the host computer inside a virtual machine. The guest does not receive a second copy of the files. Instead, VirtualBox presents the selected host path through its shared-folder service, allowing the Windows guest to browse or map it.

The host path and the guest share name are different values. For example, a host directory such as C:GameProjects can be given the share name GameProjects. Windows uses that name in the network-style path \vboxsvrGameProjects. Changing the share name changes the path the guest uses, even though the host directory stays the same.

Before you start
- Have the host directory already created. The folder can contain existing files; VirtualBox does not require an empty directory.
- Start the virtual machine so you can install Guest Additions inside the Windows guest.
- Use a Guest Additions release compatible with the VirtualBox version running the VM. If the additions are missing or incompatible, the share can be configured in the Manager but will not attach correctly in Windows.
- Choose a short, unambiguous share name. This is the name used after
\vboxsvr, not necessarily the host folder’s full Windows path. - If you plan to map a drive, decide which unused letter you want. Automatic mounting chooses letters for you, while
net uselets you specify one.
You can configure a share while the VM is running in some VirtualBox versions, but shutting the guest down first avoids changing a live attachment and makes the setup easier to verify. The important distinction is between a temporary attachment and a permanent one: Make Permanent stores the definition for later VM starts.
Step 1: Install Guest Additions in the Windows guest
Guest Additions are the in-guest drivers and services that implement VirtualBox features such as shared folders. Installing them on the host alone is not enough; the Windows operating system inside the VM must have its own Guest Additions installation.
- Start the Windows virtual machine and sign in.
- In the VirtualBox VM window, open the Devices menu.
- Choose the command that mounts the Guest Additions CD image. VirtualBox attaches its Guest Additions ISO to the VM’s virtual optical drive.
- Inside Windows, open the mounted disc in File Explorer.
- Run
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe, the Windows Guest Additions installer. - Accept the driver and service prompts required by the installer. If Windows or the installer requests a restart, reboot the guest before configuring or testing the share.
After the restart, leave the VM running if you want to test immediately, or shut it down before adding the shared-folder definition. If the Guest Additions ISO does not appear in Windows, check that the virtual optical drive is present and that the Devices-menu mount operation completed; the share cannot be used until the additions program has been installed in the guest.
Step 2: Add the host directory in VirtualBox Manager
- Power off the VM when possible.
- In VirtualBox Manager, select the virtual machine.
- Open Settings → Shared Folders.
- Click the add-folder control, usually shown with a folder and plus sign.
- For Folder Path, browse to the existing directory on the host.
- For Folder Name, enter the short guest-visible name, such as
GameProjects. - Choose the attachment and access options described below, then confirm with OK.
The folder name must be remembered exactly. Windows commands use the configured name, not the host path and not the display label of the VM. A share named GameProjects is therefore addressed as \vboxsvrGameProjects.
Shared-folder options
| Option | What it controls | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Folder Path | The directory on the host that VirtualBox exposes | Select the directory containing the files the guest needs |
| Folder Name | The name Windows sees after \vboxsvr |
Use a short name without ambiguity; reproduce it exactly in commands |
| Auto-mount | Attaches the share automatically when the guest starts | Use for a folder needed on every boot |
| Make Permanent | Saves the definition instead of making it a one-session attachment | Use when the share should remain configured across VM restarts |
| Read-only | Prevents the guest from changing files through the share | Use for installers, reference data, or source that the guest must only read |
VirtualBox shared folders are read-write by default. Select the read-only checkbox when the guest must not modify host files. The same restriction is available from the command line with the --readonly option.
Auto-mount versus manual attachment
Use Auto-mount for repeatable access
Select Auto-mount when the share should be attached during guest startup. In a Windows guest, the automatic mounting service searches for an available drive letter beginning at Z: and works downward. It does not mount the share if every drive letter in that search range is already occupied.

Auto-mount removes the need to run a command after every boot, but the resulting letter is selected by the service unless a preferred letter is configured through the relevant VirtualBox settings or tooling. If a script, game launcher, or development tool expects one specific letter, explicit mapping is more predictable.
Leave Auto-mount off for occasional or controlled use
A share without Auto-mount can still be opened manually after Windows starts. This is useful when you want the guest to access host files only for a particular session, or when you want to choose the drive letter yourself with net use.
Use Make Permanent when the definition should survive
Make Permanent controls whether VirtualBox retains the share definition for later starts of that VM. It does not by itself decide whether Windows receives a drive letter; that is controlled by Auto-mount or by a manual mapping command. A permanent share can therefore be manually opened, automatically mounted, or both, depending on the selected settings.
Step 3: Open the share in Windows File Explorer
Boot the guest after saving the settings and sign in to Windows. Open File Explorer and browse through the network view to Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders. Depending on the Windows Explorer layout, the path may appear under Network, My Networking Places, or Entire Network. The VirtualBox documentation describes the destination as Network/Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders; the labels can vary with the Windows view.
Inside that location, the configured Folder Name appears as a browsable folder. Open it to see the host directory’s contents. This browsing method does not require you to know which drive letter Auto-mount selected.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders location is absent, do not create a normal Windows network share as a substitute. First check Guest Additions, the VM’s Shared Folders entry, and the attachment state. VirtualBox shared folders use the fixed server name vboxsvr, not the host computer’s network name.

Step 4: Map a fixed drive letter with Command Prompt
For a stable path in applications, scripts, or game tools, map the share explicitly:
net use X: \vboxsvrsharename
Replace X: with an unused drive letter and replace sharename with the exact Folder Name from VirtualBox. For a share named GameProjects, the command is:
net use X: \vboxsvrGameProjects
- Open Command Prompt in the Windows guest.
- Enter the
net usecommand with your chosen letter and configured share name. - Press Enter and wait for Windows to report that the command completed successfully.
- Open File Explorer and select the new drive letter to verify that it shows the host directory’s contents.
The drive letter must not already be assigned to another disk, optical drive, mapped location, or automatic attachment. If it is occupied, choose another letter or remove the conflicting mapping before retrying.

Command-line configuration with VBoxManage
VirtualBox also exposes the Shared Folders configuration through VBoxManage. The graphical Manager is usually easier for a first setup, while the command line is useful for repeatable VM provisioning.

VBoxManage sharedfolder add "VM name" --name "sharename" --hostpath "C:PathToFolder" --automount
Replace VM name, sharename, and the host path with your values. Add --readonly when the guest must not write through the share:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
VBoxManage sharedfolder add "VM name" --name "ReferenceData" --hostpath "C:ReferenceData" --automount --readonly
Quote the VM name and host path when they contain spaces. The command configures the same core values as the Manager: host path, guest-visible name, automatic attachment, and read-only status. You still need Guest Additions installed in the Windows guest before the share can be used there.
Choosing the right configuration
| Goal | Recommended settings | How Windows accesses it |
|---|---|---|
| Use a host directory on every VM boot | Make Permanent + Auto-mount | Browse Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders or use the automatically selected letter |
| Expose files for one session only | Do not make the entry permanent; leave Auto-mount off | Browse manually or run net use after boot |
| Protect host files from guest changes | Read-only, optionally with Make Permanent | Browse or map normally; write attempts are blocked by the share mode |
| Give a script a predictable path | Make Permanent; map a chosen unused letter with net use |
Use the explicit drive letter rather than relying on automatic selection |
| Let VirtualBox choose a letter automatically | Make Permanent + Auto-mount, with free drive letters available | The service searches from Z: downward |
Troubleshooting a missing shared folder
Guest Additions is not installed
When the guest has no Guest Additions installation, the Shared Folders entry can exist in VirtualBox Manager without appearing in Windows. Mount the Guest Additions ISO from Devices, run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe inside the guest, complete the installation, and reboot if requested.
The Guest Additions version is incompatible
Verify that the additions installed in the guest are compatible with the VirtualBox host version. Reinstall the additions from the host’s current Guest Additions ISO if necessary, then restart Windows before testing the share again.
The host path no longer exists
Return to Settings → Shared Folders and inspect the Folder Path. If the directory was moved, renamed, disconnected, or deleted on the host, VirtualBox cannot expose the expected contents. Select the current existing directory and keep the Folder Name unchanged if guest scripts already depend on it.
The share name is mistyped
Compare the Folder Name character by character with the command. The correct pattern is \vboxsvrFolderName. Do not substitute the host path, the VM name, or the Windows computer name. If the configured name is GameProjects, a command using GameProject addresses a different, nonexistent share.

Auto-mount found no drive letter
Automatic Windows mounting searches for a free letter beginning at Z:. If every letter is occupied, the service mounts nothing. Inspect the guest’s assigned letters from Z: downward, disconnect an unnecessary mapping or device, and restart or manually map the share with an available letter.
The share is configured as temporary
If the entry disappears after the VM restarts, it was not saved as permanent. Reopen Settings → Shared Folders, select the folder, and enable Make Permanent. This setting preserves the VirtualBox definition; it is separate from whether the guest automatically assigns a drive letter.
You expected write access but selected read-only
Read-only is deliberate protection, not a missing Windows permission. Open the share’s settings and clear the read-only option only when guest changes to host files are acceptable. If the files are meant to be reference material, leave read-only enabled and use a separate writable share for output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe folder is visible but an application cannot find it
Some programs do not automatically search the Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders location. Map an explicit letter with net use and select that drive inside the application. Confirm that the chosen letter remains free and that the command uses the exact configured share name.
Safe operating practices
- Use read-only mode for installers, source snapshots, and reference files that the guest should not alter.
- Use a dedicated host directory rather than exposing an entire user profile or system directory.
- Choose a stable Folder Name and avoid changing it after creating scripts or shortcuts in the guest.
- Keep the host path available before starting the VM, especially when it is on removable storage or another mounted volume.
- When a tool requires one fixed location, map a deliberate drive letter instead of depending on Auto-mount’s letter search.
- When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time: first Guest Additions, then the host path and share name, then attachment mode, and finally the Windows mapping.
Quick verification checklist
- Guest Additions is installed inside Windows and the guest has been restarted if requested.
- The host directory exists at the path shown in Settings → Shared Folders.
- The Folder Name is short and matches the spelling used in Windows.
- Read-only is enabled or disabled intentionally.
- Make Permanent is selected when the definition must survive a VM restart.
- Auto-mount is selected only when automatic attachment is wanted.
- If Auto-mount is used, at least one drive letter in the search beginning at
Z:is free. - For manual access, File Explorer can reach Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders.
- For a fixed path,
net use X: \vboxsvrsharenameuses an unused letter and the exact configured name.
How to remove or change a share
To change the host directory, share name, read-only state, or attachment behavior, shut down the VM when practical and return to Settings → Shared Folders. Select the entry and edit its properties, or remove it and add a new entry. If Windows has a drive mapping that points to the old share name, remove or remap that Windows-side connection separately; changing the VirtualBox entry does not automatically rewrite existing net use mappings.
When retiring a share, remove the Windows mapping first if applications still reference it, then remove the VirtualBox definition. Deleting the definition does not delete the host directory itself; it only stops VirtualBox from presenting that directory to the guest.
Final setup in one minute
Install Guest Additions from the mounted ISO by running VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. In VirtualBox Manager, open Settings → Shared Folders, add the existing host directory, assign a Folder Name, and choose Auto-mount, Make Permanent, and Read-only according to the way you will use the files. In Windows, browse to Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders or run net use X: \vboxsvrsharename with an unused letter and the exact share name. If nothing appears, check the additions installation, host path, spelling, and the availability of drive letters beginning at Z:.
