Java Edition: Create a new world, set World Type to Superflat, select Customize, and choose The Void. Minecraft generates a small stone platform with nothing else around it. Bedrock Edition: the normal world-creation menu may offer Bottomless Pit, but not a true Java-style Void preset. For a genuinely empty Bedrock Overworld, install a behavior pack whose dimensions/overworld.json uses "generator_type": "void", then create a Creative world with the pack enabled.

What a void world actually contains
A void world has no ordinary landscape. There are no trees, caves, villages, ores, animals, water sources, or naturally generated food to support a normal survival start. You either receive a deliberately supplied platform or begin by placing every block yourself. That makes the setup useful for floating builds, redstone testing, adventure-map foundations, technical experiments, and controlled command testing, but it is not a conventional survival seed.

The phrase “void world” can describe two different results. A preset may create an empty-looking Superflat map while giving you a starter platform. A generator-level void dimension removes terrain generation itself. The first is convenient; the second is the closer match to a world with no blocks.
Java Edition: use the built-in The Void preset
Java Edition has the most direct, menu-only method. The The Void Superflat preset creates a small stone platform and leaves the surrounding space as Void.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Step-by-step setup
- From the title screen, select Singleplayer, then Create New World.
- Open the world settings and set World Type to Superflat.
- Select Customize. In the Superflat customization screen, open the preset list.
- Choose The Void. Confirm the preset and return to the world-creation screen.
- Choose your game mode. Creative is the practical choice because the generated platform has no renewable resources. Turn on cheats if you intend to use commands.
- Create the world and wait for the initial spawn. The platform is your only generated foothold; the rest of the visible world is empty space.
Exact button placement can move between Java releases, but the relevant labels remain Superflat, Customize, and The Void. If you do not see the preset, verify that the world type is Superflat rather than a different generator.
Planning your first platform
The generated stone platform is a spawn point, not a complete base. Enlarge it before walking, jumping, or placing machines near its edge. In Creative, carry blocks, lighting, water, ladders, and scaffolding in your inventory. In a challenge map, decide in advance how players will obtain those items; the Void itself supplies none of them.

The Void and Bottomless Pit are separate Superflat choices. The Void is designed to give you a small stone starting platform with emptiness beyond it. Bottomless Pit instead removes the bedrock layer from an otherwise flat setup, allowing mining or falling through the floor into the Void. It is useful when your project specifically needs a dig-through surface, but it is not the same as spawning on an isolated platform with no terrain.
| Characteristic | The Void | Bottomless Pit |
|---|---|---|
| Where to select it | Java Superflat preset | Java Superflat preset; also listed among Bedrock flat presets in current official documentation |
| Starting surface | Small stone platform | Flat layers without a bedrock bottom |
| World around the start | Void beyond the platform | Flat generated layers until you mine or fall through them |
| Best use | Floating builds and deliberately empty maps | Testing deep excavation or access to the Void below a flat world |
Bedrock Edition: check the current Advanced-tab presets
Bedrock’s menus and presets do not exactly mirror Java. In Microsoft’s May 7, 2025 overview, the available flat-world choices are Classic Flat, Tunneler’s Dream, Water World, Overworld, Snowy Kingdom, Bottomless Pit, Desert, and Redstone Ready. That article says the team is still working on a dedicated Void preset, so a Java-style The Void entry may not appear in your installed Bedrock release.

How to create the closest menu-only Bedrock world
- Choose Create New from the Bedrock Play screen.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Enable Flat World.
- Open the preset selector and inspect the list supplied by your version.
- Choose Bottomless Pit if your goal is a flat surface that can be mined or dropped through. Do not treat it as a guaranteed empty platform world; its terrain behavior differs from Java’s The Void.
- Select Creative, enable coordinates if you need to record a build grid, and create the world.
Preset names are version-dependent. If Bottomless Pit is absent, update Bedrock or use the behavior-pack method below. Do not assume that a flat preset with a thin surface is a generator-level void.
Bedrock Edition: generate a true void Overworld with a behavior pack
For an empty Bedrock Overworld, Microsoft documents a behavior-pack route. The pack overrides the dimension’s generation component and sets its generator type to void. This is a file-based setup rather than a world-creation checkbox.
Before you begin
- Use a Bedrock installation that supports behavior packs and custom dimension files.
- Work with Minecraft closed while creating or editing the pack files.
- Make a copy of any world before applying, removing, or changing the pack.
- Plan to create the test world in Creative. A void generator does not provide the wood, stone, food, or safe terrain required for an ordinary survival opening.
Required folder layout
Create a behavior-pack folder with its normal manifest.json. Inside that same folder, add a directory named dimensions, then place overworld.json inside it:
your_behavior_pack/
manifest.json
dimensions/
overworld.json
The manifest must be a valid behavior-pack manifest for your Bedrock version. Use the pack’s normal UUID and version fields; the dimension file is the part that controls void generation.

Contents of dimensions/overworld.json
Use the documented dimension identifier, bounds, and generator component:
{
"format_version": "1.18.0",
"minecraft:dimension": {
"description": {"identifier": "minecraft:overworld"},
"components": {
"minecraft:dimension_bounds": {"min": -16, "max": 256},
"minecraft:generation": {"generator_type": "void"}
}
}
}
Keep the filename and directory name exact. JSON punctuation matters: use double quotes around every key and string value, commas between sibling properties, and no trailing comma after the final property.

Activate the pack and create the world
- Close Minecraft before copying or editing the pack.
- Place the completed behavior-pack folder in the location your Bedrock installation uses for behavior packs.
- Launch Minecraft and start a new world.
- In the world’s Behavior Packs section, activate the pack. Resolve any dependency or manifest errors before continuing.
- Set the game mode to Creative and turn on Show Coordinates. Coordinates make it easier to locate the first platform you build and to diagnose height-bound issues.
- Create the world, then confirm that no ordinary terrain generated around the spawn area. Place a temporary block or platform before moving away from your starting position.
The example uses a minimum height of -16 and a maximum of 256. Those bounds constrain the visible, buildable range supplied by the pack. Areas outside the saved or generated range become Void, so do not use the numbers as a promise that every Bedrock release exposes the same height behavior.
Creating void Nether or End dimensions on Bedrock
The same documentation states that the Nether and End support void generation, but not custom height bounds in the same way as the Overworld example. To target another dimension, create a corresponding file such as nether.json or the_end.json, change the dimension identifier to that dimension’s identifier, and use the generation component with "generator_type": "void". Omit the bounds component where the dimension does not support custom height bounds.

Test one dimension at a time in a disposable Creative world. A malformed identifier or unsupported component can prevent the pack from loading, while a valid pack may still leave the Overworld unchanged if its file targets a different dimension.

Spawn, resources, and building strategy
There is no natural resource chain
Neither a true void generator nor Java’s isolated platform gives you a normal progression path. No tree means no wooden tools; no stone layer means no cobblestone generator unless you deliberately supply water and lava; no animals or crops means no automatic food source. For a build map, place starter chests, command blocks, or a resource platform before inviting players.
Make a safe spawn area
Enclose the initial platform with walls or a railing, add lighting, and expand it before testing movement. A single accidental step off the edge can be fatal outside Creative. If the map is for other players, provide a clearly marked return pad, a recovery teleport, or a protected spawn platform.
Designing a progression challenge
A void map can still support survival-style play if the author supplies controlled resources. Give players a finite starter kit, a cobblestone or tree-island mechanism, or access to a trading and loot system. Document every intended source of blocks and food so players do not mistake missing terrain for a broken world.

Testing the Void with commands
Commands require the relevant permissions or cheats. In a test world, teleporting below the normal floor can demonstrate where the Void begins, while /fill can clear a controlled test area. Use a disposable copy and select coordinates carefully; a large fill can erase a platform permanently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute/tp @s ~ -20 ~
The exact result depends on the edition, world height, and enabled permissions. If teleporting fails, enable cheats, verify the command syntax for your edition, and test at a coordinate inside the dimension’s configured bounds.
Behavior-pack risks and recovery
Back up before changing the pack. Microsoft warns that the pack slices the visible height range, generates unsaved areas as Void, and can leave explored chunks void after the pack is removed. Removing the pack restores the original height range for hidden existing terrain, but newly generated areas may retain their saved void state.
Safer workflow
- Duplicate the world or export it before enabling the pack.
- Use a clearly named test copy for every change to the JSON.
- Record the pack version and the bounds used.
- Explore only a small area until you confirm the result.
- If the outcome is wrong, close Minecraft, restore the backup, and then edit the pack rather than repeatedly toggling it on the only copy of a world.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Void is missing in Java
- Confirm that World Type is Superflat.
- Open Customize; the preset list is not shown in other world types.
- Check that you selected The Void, not Bottomless Pit.
- Recreate the world if you changed the preset after generating it; a preset change does not remodel an existing save.
Bedrock still generates terrain
- Verify that the behavior pack is active on this specific world, not merely installed.
- Check the folder path:
dimensions/overworld.jsonmust be beside the manifest inside the pack. - Validate JSON punctuation and the exact
minecraft:overworldidentifier. - Close and relaunch Minecraft after editing files, then create a new test world.
- Confirm that your installed release supports the documented format and custom dimension behavior.
The world becomes damaged after removing the pack
Do not continue exploring the original save. Restore the pre-pack backup, because chunks generated while the void range was active may keep their saved state even after the original height range becomes available again.
Quick Recap
Method comparison
| Method | Edition support | True emptiness | Starting platform | Setup effort | Resources | Reversibility and risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java The Void preset | Java | Preset approximation with Void around the start | Generated stone platform | Menu only | None beyond supplied platform | Low risk for a new world |
| Java Bottomless Pit | Java | Flat layers that can lead into the Void | Flat surface; bedrock removed | Menu only | Flat-world materials until mined away | Low risk for a new world |
| Bedrock flat preset | Bedrock | Approximation; depends on selected preset | Depends on preset; not guaranteed to be an isolated platform | Menu only | Preset-dependent terrain | Low risk for a new world |
| Bedrock void behavior pack | Bedrock | Generator-level void in the targeted dimension | Absent unless you build one | Manifest plus dimension JSON and activation | None unless supplied by the map maker | Backups essential; saved chunks can retain void state |
Which method should you choose?
- Choose Java The Void when you want the fastest reliable setup and a ready-made stone foothold.
- Choose Java Bottomless Pit when the project needs a flat mining surface or a deliberate route into the Void.
- Choose a Bedrock flat preset only when an approximation is sufficient and the preset list in your release meets your needs.
- Choose the Bedrock behavior pack when the absence of generated terrain matters more than convenience and you can maintain backups and JSON files.
Key points to remember
- Java Edition includes a direct Superflat The Void preset with a small stone platform.
- Bedrock’s documented flat presets include Bottomless Pit, while a dedicated Void preset may not yet be available in every release.
- A true Bedrock void Overworld uses
minecraft:generationwith"generator_type": "void"indimensions/overworld.json. - Plan a spawn platform and resource supply because ordinary terrain does not generate.
- Back up Bedrock worlds before enabling or removing the behavior pack.
