A playlist file only sets the order of your videos; it does not make different codecs compatible. For clips with different codecs, use FFmpeg’s concat filter to decode, join, and re-encode them. The concat demuxer with -c copy is for inputs whose streams and relevant parameters already match.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method

Make a playlist file when using the concat demuxer
A concat demuxer playlist is a plain-text manifest, often named inputs.txt. Put one file entry on each line, in the order you want them joined:

file 'clip-three.mkv'Use paths relative to the playlist’s directory where practical. The manifest controls order; it does not convert a video or audio stream.

Use stream copy only when the files are compatible
If inspection confirms the inputs meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements, join them without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i inputs.txt -c copy joined.mp4-c copy copies packets as-is. It cannot change one codec into another, so this is not a solution for mixed-codec clips. The demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. It uses each file’s recorded duration to adjust timestamps for the next file; inaccurate durations can cause artifacts. The example uses -safe 0 to allow paths that fail the demuxer’s safe-path checks. Use it only when the playlist contents are trusted.
Join clips with different codecs using the concat filter
For clips with different codecs, supply each file as an input, connect corresponding video and audio streams to the concat filter, and encode the result. This illustrative command assumes that both inputs contain one video stream and one audio stream:

This command is a starting point, not a guaranteed fit for arbitrary files. The concat filter expects corresponding segments to be suitable for concatenation; codec differences alone may not be the only mismatch.
Inspect and normalize mismatched inputs
Before building the filter graph, inspect each file’s streams and properties with ffprobe. Compare the number and order of audio and video streams, resolution, pixel format, sample rate, channel layout, and frame timing. If those properties differ, decide how to normalize them rather than assuming the basic graph will handle every case.

- Use filters such as
scaleandsetsarwhen you need consistent dimensions or sample aspect ratio. - Use
fpsonly when you have a reason to standardize frame timing; do not force a different frame rate blindly. - Use
aresamplewhen audio sample rates need to be made compatible. - If a clip has no audio, the example graph will not work as written. Supply silent audio for that segment or construct separate video and audio concatenations.
Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for stream handling and encoder options. Review the joined file from beginning to end, especially transitions, audio sync, and the final segment.

YouTube’s recommended upload settings list MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC audio, among other listed audio options. YouTube also recommends uploading at the same frame rate at which the footage was recorded. Its current SDR bitrate recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p at a standard frame rate and 12 Mbps for 1080p at a high frame rate; these are recommendations, not mandatory limits. Check YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for its color-space and audio guidance as well.

Choose settings based on the source and the intended output. Re-encoding can make mixed inputs usable in one file, but it also creates a new encoded generation. Confirm the result plays correctly before uploading.
Common problems and fixes
- The demuxer reports incompatible streams or the output breaks at a clip boundary: The inputs may differ in codecs, stream layout, or time bases. Do not rely on
-c copyfor mixed codecs; use the concat filter and normalize relevant properties. - The concat filter rejects inputs or produces an unexpected transition: Check that corresponding streams exist in every segment and compare resolution, pixel format, audio sample rate, channel layout, and timing. Add suitable normalization filters where needed.
- The command fails because one clip has no audio: The sample graph expects audio in both inputs. Add a silent audio stream for the clip or build separate audio and video filter paths.
- Timestamps or playback are wrong after a demuxer join: The demuxer adjusts later timestamps using recorded file durations. Check for inaccurate durations and use a re-encoding workflow if the inputs need processing.
- FFmpeg rejects a playlist path: Keep entries relative to the playlist directory where possible. If you use
-safe 0for paths that fail safe checks, use only a playlist you trust.
