How to Restart an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Automatically After a Network Outage

Use FFmpeg’s fifo output recovery for temporary RTMP interruptions, add process supervision for crashes, and confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

For an FFmpeg process sending RTMP to YouTube, use FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer with output-recovery options to retry a temporary network failure. If FFmpeg exits, have your operating system restart the process. These are separate safeguards: a process that is running is not necessarily sending healthy video, so verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room.

First identify what failed

“Network outage” can describe different failures, and the remedy depends on which connection broke:

  • FFmpeg input: The source file or upstream feed stopped providing media. Output recovery alone does not fix a stalled input.
  • FFmpeg output: FFmpeg still has media to send, but its connection to YouTube failed. The documented fifo output-recovery pattern is intended for this case.
  • Host network: The computer lost connectivity. FFmpeg may retry once connectivity returns, but a dead router, ISP outage, or network reconfiguration can require additional attention.
  • YouTube configuration or service: A wrong or changed stream key, stream URL, or receiver-side issue may prevent a successful connection even when FFmpeg is running.

HTTP reconnect flags are not a general solution for an RTMP destination. They concern HTTP protocol behavior and are relevant when the input uses HTTP, not as a fix for YouTube RTMP output.

Configure FFmpeg to recover its output

FFmpeg’s manual documents a fifo pseudo-muxer pattern for continuing real-time processing during temporary output failure and attempting recovery. Its example includes -f fifo -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and a recovery wait setting. Adapt the pattern to your existing input, stream mapping, codecs, and YouTube destination; the manual’s ellipses are placeholders, not a complete command to paste and run. See the FFmpeg fifo muxer documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before using the options: builds and supported syntax can vary. In particular, the manual documents max_recovery_attempts (zero means unlimited retries in that interface) and recover_any_error, which broadens the errors that trigger recovery. Choose deliberately: retrying every error may repeatedly retry a persistent problem such as invalid credentials rather than resolving it.

Keep the active YouTube destination current

Use the stream URL and key shown for the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as secret: YouTube describes it as password-like information that directs and authorizes the encoder feed. Do not publish it in a command posted to a forum, a screenshot, or a public log. Check the chosen stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings instead of assuming they are enabled or disabled; see YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits

Internal output recovery only helps while FFmpeg remains alive and able to retry. If it exits, configure a service manager such as systemd to relaunch the process after failure. A restart policy is not a substitute for the FFmpeg command, and a service-manager restart example should not be copied without adapting its service parameters, input, and execution environment.

Also note the limit of process supervision: it can restart an exited process, but it may not detect a process that remains alive while hung or no longer sends usable media. Detecting that condition requires a separate health check or watchdog strategy.

Test recovery and confirm YouTube is receiving media

  1. Record which failure you are testing: output interruption, host network loss, input loss, or a YouTube configuration change. Test in a controlled way where possible.
  2. Watch FFmpeg’s logs to see whether it remains running and attempts output recovery, or exits and is relaunched by the service manager.
  3. Check the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm stream health and read the specific error messages; a live FFmpeg process alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
  4. After reconnecting, check picture and audio quality rather than assuming recovery was seamless. YouTube advises testing encoder failover and monitoring audio and video quality: YouTube live-streaming troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures

What you observe Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg exits and does not return Process supervision Configure the host’s service manager to restart the process after failure, and inspect its logs for the exit cause.
FFmpeg remains open but YouTube reports no healthy stream Output connection or receiver status Review FFmpeg output logs and the specific Live Control Room health message; check outbound connectivity and the active stream’s URL and key.
Retries continue without a successful connection Persistent network, credential, or configuration error Check whether the host has outbound connectivity and confirm the current stream settings. Broad retry options do not correct persistent failures.
YouTube receives video, but the source freezes or disappears Input-side failure Investigate the input source separately; RTMP output recovery does not restore a missing input.
The stream reconnects but playback is disrupted or quality is poor Receiver health and media quality Check Live Control Room stream health and inspect audio and video after recovery. Do not assume a reconnect guarantees seamless playback.

Reduce the chance of an interruption

YouTube recommends sufficient outbound bandwidth and a reliable connection with bandwidth headroom. A wired Ethernet connection may help when the streaming host can use Ethernet, but it cannot fix a failed router, ISP outage, incorrect key, FFmpeg error, or YouTube-side problem. YouTube’s guidance notes that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream”: YouTube streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube rather than stream a live camera or input through your own FFmpeg host, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
