How to Create and Manage Tables in PostgreSQL on a VPS

Create and manage PostgreSQL tables safely on a VPS: verify the right database, design constraints, inspect results, evolve schemas through migrations, grant least privilege, and choose between DELETE, TRUNCATE, and DROP without losing dependent objects.

Use psql to connect to the intended database, verify the database, schema, PostgreSQL version, and role, then create a schema-qualified table with explicit types and constraints. Inspect it, grant only the privileges the application needs, and make later changes through tested migrations. Keep DELETE, TRUNCATE, and DROP TABLE separate in your procedures: the first two remove rows while preserving the table, whereas DROP TABLE removes the database object and its dependent structure.

What you need before changing a PostgreSQL table on a VPS

A VPS does not change PostgreSQL’s SQL semantics, but it does put responsibility for access, backups, network exposure, and operating-system resources on you or your team. Before running data-definition language (DDL), have these items ready:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A shell account with the required operating-system access to run a client such as psql.
  • The exact database name, PostgreSQL host and port, login role, and authentication method.
  • A staging database or disposable copy in which to test the DDL and both successful and intentionally failing inserts.
  • A current, restorable backup and a maintenance or deployment window appropriate to the table’s size and workload.
  • A clear owner role for the table and a separate application role for routine queries.

Do not assume that a successful connection means you are in the right database. PostgreSQL databases, schemas, and roles are separate namespaces and security boundaries.

Connect and verify the session

For a local PostgreSQL installation, an administrator may connect through the operating-system account that owns the service:

For a remote or separately managed instance, supply the connection details explicitly. Keep passwords out of shell history and process listings; use your existing password manager, a protected .pgpass file, a secrets manager, or an interactive prompt according to your environment.

psql 'host=db.example.internal port=5432 dbname=appdb user=db_admin'

conninfo
SELECT current_database(), current_user, current_schema(), version();
dn

conninfo is a psql command, while the other lines are SQL. Record the output in the migration log so a review can show which database and role received the change.

Create a table with an explicit, durable design

PostgreSQL’s CREATE TABLE command creates a new, initially empty table in the current database. If you provide a schema, PostgreSQL creates the table there, and the executing role becomes its owner (PostgreSQL Global Development Group, CREATE TABLE reference, 2026). Create the schema first if it does not exist, and qualify every table name in production scripts.

CREATE SCHEMA IF NOT EXISTS app;

CREATE TABLE app.orders (
    order_id bigint GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY,
    customer_id   bigint NOT NULL,
    order_status text NOT NULL DEFAULT 'pending',
    order_total   numeric(12, 2) NOT NULL,
    placed_at timestamptz NOT NULL DEFAULT now(),
    updated_at timestamptz NOT NULL DEFAULT now(),
    CONSTRAINT orders_pkey PRIMARY KEY (order_id),
    CONSTRAINT orders_total_nonnegative CHECK (order_total >= 0),
    CONSTRAINT orders_status_valid CHECK (order_status IN ('pending', 'paid', 'cancelled'))
);

This definition makes row identity, required values, allowed states, and a basic business rule visible to PostgreSQL. Constraints are tests that new or updated rows must satisfy. Giving important constraints names makes error messages, migrations, and incident work easier to follow.

Choose columns and constraints deliberately

  • Primary key: Use one for stable row identity. An identity column asks PostgreSQL to generate unique numeric values; the primary-key constraint still enforces uniqueness and non-nullability.
  • NOT NULL: Add it wherever the application cannot operate on an absent value. Leaving a column nullable is a business decision, not a neutral default.
  • UNIQUE: Enforce values that must not repeat, such as an external order reference. Consider whether a nullable column should allow multiple nulls under PostgreSQL’s unique-index rules.
  • CHECK: Express a rule that can be evaluated from the row, such as a non-negative amount or an allowed status. Keep the expression deterministic and understandable.
  • Foreign key: Link a child row to a parent table and decide deliberately what should happen when the parent changes. Add the supporting indexes your workload needs; PostgreSQL does not automatically index the referencing column.
  • Defaults: Use defaults for server-side values such as timestamps or generated identifiers. A default is applied when a value is omitted; it does not repair an explicitly supplied null.

A table that refers to another table should be created with a named foreign key. The referenced table must already exist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
CREATE TABLE app.customers (
    customer_id bigint GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY,
    email       text NOT NULL,
    CONSTRAINT customers_pkey PRIMARY KEY (customer_id),
    CONSTRAINT customers_email_key UNIQUE (email)
);

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    ADD CONSTRAINT orders_customer_fkey
    FOREIGN KEY (customer_id)
    REFERENCES app.customers (customer_id);

Schema qualification prevents an unexpected search_path from directing a statement to another schema. In application code and migration files, prefer names such as app.orders rather than relying on an implicit first match.

Inspect and test the new table

Do not treat a command that returned without an error as the end of a migration. Inspect ownership, columns, indexes, constraints, and grants.

Use psql’s structural views

d app.orders
d+ app.orders

d shows columns, indexes, and constraints. d+ adds storage and descriptive details available to your PostgreSQL version. For scripts and audit reports, query the information schema:

SELECT column_name, data_type, is_nullable, column_default
FROM information_schema.columns
WHERE table_schema = 'app'
  AND table_name = 'orders'
ORDER BY ordinal_position;

SELECT constraint_name, constraint_type
FROM information_schema.table_constraints
WHERE table_schema = 'app'
  AND table_name = 'orders'
ORDER BY constraint_name;

PostgreSQL catalogs provide details that the information schema intentionally normalizes. For example, this query lists foreign keys involving the table:

SELECT conname,
       conrelid::regclass AS table_name,
       confrelid::regclass AS referenced_table
FROM pg_constraint
WHERE contype = 'f'
  AND (conrelid = 'app.orders'::regclass
       OR confrelid = 'app.orders'::regclass);

Run positive and negative tests

In staging, insert a row that should succeed, then verify each important constraint with a row that should fail. For example, a negative total should be rejected by orders_total_nonnegative, and an unknown customer should be rejected by orders_customer_fkey. Capture the expected error and roll back the test transaction:

BEGIN;

INSERT INTO app.orders (customer_id, order_total)
VALUES (1, 49.95);

-- This should fail the named CHECK constraint:
INSERT INTO app.orders (customer_id, order_total)
VALUES (1, -1.00);

ROLLBACK;

Use a staging copy with representative indexes and data volume. Table-change duration and locking depend on schema size, indexes, active workload, PostgreSQL version, and VPS resources; there is no universal timing number to rely on.

Evolve a table safely with ALTER TABLE

Use a versioned migration for every structural change. Review the lock level and possible table scan or rewrite before applying it to a busy production table. Coordinate the migration with the application release so old and new code can coexist during deployment.

Add a column without blocking a large backfill unnecessarily

For a required value on a large existing table, separate the metadata change, data backfill, and validation:

  1. Add the column as nullable, usually without a table-wide default.
  2. Deploy code that writes the new value for new rows.
  3. Backfill existing rows in measured batches, committing between batches if your operational plan allows it.
  4. Add a constraint that describes the completed state and validate it.
  5. Set NOT NULL after every row satisfies the rule, then remove any compatibility code that is no longer needed.
ALTER TABLE app.orders
    ADD COLUMN sales_channel text;

-- Backfill in an application-specific, bounded process.

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    ADD CONSTRAINT orders_sales_channel_valid
    CHECK (sales_channel IN ('web', 'store', 'partner'))
    NOT VALID;

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    VALIDATE CONSTRAINT orders_sales_channel_valid;

-- Only after all rows are populated and verified:
ALTER TABLE app.orders
    ALTER COLUMN sales_channel SET NOT NULL;

NOT VALID lets you add certain constraints while deferring the scan of existing rows; validation still must complete before you rely on the rule for all data. Confirm the behavior and lock impact against the PostgreSQL version running on your VPS.

Change names, defaults, and types

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    RENAME COLUMN order_status TO status;

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    ALTER COLUMN status SET DEFAULT 'pending';

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    ALTER COLUMN order_total TYPE numeric(14, 2)
    USING order_total::numeric(14, 2);

ALTER TABLE app.orders
    RENAME CONSTRAINT orders_total_nonnegative TO orders_amount_nonnegative;

A rename is usually a metadata operation, but application queries, views, reports, triggers, and generated code still need to be checked. A type change can rewrite the table or scan every row, and the USING expression must succeed for every existing value. Test it on a production-sized copy, watch locks, and set an appropriate statement or lock timeout in the migration runner rather than allowing an unexpected indefinite wait.

Add or remove constraints in a controlled order

Before adding a constraint, query for violating rows and fix them. Before removing one, identify which application or reporting rule was relying on it. Removing a constraint makes the database accept states that existing code may not handle; record the replacement validation in the migration and application design.

Separate ownership from application privileges

Ownership controls structural authority. The owner can alter or drop the table and can manage its privileges. Routine application roles should normally not own application tables. PostgreSQL table privileges include SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, TRUNCATE, REFERENCES, and TRIGGER (PostgreSQL Global Development Group, Privileges documentation, 2026).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create distinct roles

Use one protected role for migrations and ownership, and a role with only runtime capabilities for the application. Set credentials through your deployment secret mechanism; do not paste a production password into a migration file.

CREATE ROLE app_owner NOLOGIN;
CREATE ROLE app_runtime LOGIN;

ALTER SCHEMA app OWNER TO app_owner;
ALTER TABLE app.orders OWNER TO app_owner;

GRANT USAGE ON SCHEMA app TO app_runtime;
GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE ON TABLE app.orders TO app_runtime;

The schema USAGE grant is required for a role to resolve objects in that schema. Add DELETE, TRUNCATE, REFERENCES, or TRIGGER only when a documented feature needs it. Keep migration-only powers away from the runtime role.

Review and remove broad grants

PostgreSQL documentation states that no privileges are granted to PUBLIC by default on tables, table columns, sequences, foreign-data wrappers, foreign servers, large objects, schemas, tablespaces, or configuration parameters. A migration, extension, or administrator may nevertheless have added a broad grant, so inspect the actual state:

SELECT grantee, privilege_type
FROM information_schema.role_table_grants
WHERE table_schema = 'app'
  AND table_name = 'orders'
ORDER BY grantee, privilege_type;

REVOKE ALL ON TABLE app.orders FROM PUBLIC;

Granting table access does not automatically grant every privilege on related objects. If a legacy serial column uses a sequence, inspect that sequence and grant only the required sequence privileges. Identity columns and sequence behavior should be verified on the PostgreSQL version you run.

Set defaults for future tables

ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES affects objects created in the future by a particular role; it does not repair grants on tables that already exist. Run it as, or specify, the role that will create the tables:

ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES FOR ROLE app_owner IN SCHEMA app
    GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE ON TABLES TO app_runtime;

Apply a separate default for sequences only if your design requires it, and still review each migration. Default privileges are not a substitute for auditing existing grants.

Choose the right way to remove data or a table

Decide first whether the table must survive. The following operations have different effects and dependency risks:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Operation Rows Table definition Dependency behavior Typical use
DELETE Selected rows or all rows Retained Row-level foreign-key and trigger behavior applies Controlled removal with a WHERE clause or an auditable transaction
TRUNCATE All rows at once Retained Can include CASCADE; takes a strong table lock Fast reset of a table when you understand referencing tables
DROP TABLE ... RESTRICT All rows Removed, including indexes, rules, triggers, and constraints Refuses to remove known dependent objects; RESTRICT is the default Intentional removal after dependency review
DROP TABLE ... CASCADE All rows Removed Removes dependent objects too Only after an explicitly approved dependency inventory

Delete rows while keeping the table

BEGIN;
DELETE FROM app.orders
WHERE order_status = 'cancelled'
  AND placed_at < timestamptz '2025-01-01 00:00:00+00';

-- Inspect the affected-row count in your client.
COMMIT;

Always include and review the WHERE clause. A transaction lets you roll back before commit, but it does not replace a backup or a tested recovery plan.

Truncate a table for a complete reset

TRUNCATE TABLE app.orders RESTART IDENTITY;

TRUNCATE removes every row and can reset identity sequences. If other tables reference app.orders, PostgreSQL will refuse the operation unless you address the dependency or explicitly use CASCADE. Treat TRUNCATE ... CASCADE as a multi-table data deletion and review every affected table first.

Drop a table only when the object itself is obsolete

DROP TABLE app.orders RESTRICT;

PostgreSQL’s documentation describes DROP TABLE as removing tables from the database (PostgreSQL 14 documentation, 2025). Dropping also removes the table’s indexes, rules, triggers, and constraints. RESTRICT is the safe default: it fails when dependent objects exist. CASCADE removes those dependent objects, so never add it merely to make an error disappear.

Inventory dependencies before deletion

Start with d+ app.orders and a foreign-key query, then inspect views, functions, triggers, scheduled jobs, and application configuration. A foreign key is only one kind of dependency; a view or stored function can still break after a drop. If the inventory is not complete, stop and use RESTRICT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable migration workflow

  1. Identify the target: Confirm host, database, schema, PostgreSQL version, and executing role with conninfo and SQL session queries.
  2. Read the current state: Inspect d+, information-schema metadata, indexes, constraints, owners, and grants.
  3. Check dependencies: Search foreign keys, views, triggers, functions, background jobs, and application queries affected by the change.
  4. Test on representative data: Run the migration and positive/negative tests against a staging copy with comparable indexes and volume.
  5. Plan locks and runtime: Identify operations that scan or rewrite a table. Set migration timeouts and coordinate with traffic and deployment windows.
  6. Back up and record a rollback: Verify that the backup can be restored and write the reverse migration where reversal is technically possible.
  7. Apply the smallest safe step: Use a transaction where supported, or split a long backfill into bounded, observable batches.
  8. Deploy compatible application code: Add new writes before enforcing a new required value, and remove compatibility paths only after validation.
  9. Verify after commit: Re-run structural queries, inspect grants and ownership, test representative reads and writes, and monitor errors and lock waits.

Migration reversibility is not identical for every change. A rename can usually be reversed; a dropped column or deleted data cannot be recovered without a backup. Record that distinction in the change review instead of promising an automatic rollback.

VPS security and operations that affect table management

  • Restrict network reachability: Keep PostgreSQL accessible only from required networks and hosts. Configure the VPS firewall and PostgreSQL host-based authentication for your topology, not from a copied provider example.
  • Encrypt connections where supported: Require TLS for connections that cross an untrusted network and verify the server identity according to your certificate setup.
  • Separate administrative and runtime roles: Use a protected owner or migration role for DDL and a least-privilege application role for ordinary queries.
  • Protect and test backups: Maintain backups appropriate to your recovery objectives and perform restore tests on a schedule. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not evidence.
  • Watch VPS capacity: DDL and backfills consume CPU, memory, storage bandwidth, WAL, and connection slots. Leave headroom and observe lock waits and disk usage during a change.

Firewall rules, TLS settings, backup tools, filesystem layouts, and provider consoles differ between VPS environments. Verify the exact configuration against the provider and PostgreSQL version you operate.

Troubleshoot common table-management failures

ERROR: relation ... does not exist

Check current_database(), current_schema(), and search_path. List schemas with dn and use the fully qualified name, such as app.orders. A table may exist in another database or schema, or the session may use a role that cannot see it.

ERROR: permission denied for schema or table

Grant schema USAGE and the specific table privilege to the runtime role. If the operation is DDL, connect as the owner or a role authorized to act for the owner; ordinary SELECT or INSERT grants do not confer ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ERROR: must be owner of table

Inspect the owner with dp app.orders or catalog queries, then run the migration through the designated owner role. If ownership must change, use an administrative role and an explicit ALTER TABLE app.orders OWNER TO app_owner, subject to your role-membership policy.

duplicate key or check-constraint failures

Read the named constraint in the error, query the conflicting rows, and decide whether the data or the design is wrong. Do not disable a constraint to force a migration through; clean the data or revise the migration in staging first.

cannot drop ... because other objects depend on it

Keep RESTRICT, inspect the dependency list, and remove or migrate each dependent object intentionally. Use CASCADE only when the complete deletion set has been reviewed and approved.

A migration waits or times out

Another transaction may hold a conflicting lock, or the operation may be scanning or rewriting a large table. Check active sessions and locks, stop the blocking application work when appropriate, and reschedule or break the migration into smaller steps. Do not repeatedly retry a destructive statement without confirming whether an earlier attempt committed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact production checklist

  • Target database, schema, version, and role verified.
  • Table names schema-qualified and constraints explicitly named.
  • Primary key, nullability, uniqueness, checks, and foreign keys match business rules.
  • Successful and failing test cases run on representative staging data.
  • Owner role separated from application runtime role.
  • Schema and table grants are least privilege; unintended PUBLIC access removed.
  • Future-object defaults configured only for the object-creating role, with existing grants reviewed separately.
  • Locks, scans, rewrites, backfill duration, and deployment compatibility assessed.
  • Dependencies inventoried before TRUNCATE, DROP, or any constraint removal.
  • Backup restore and rollback procedure confirmed before production execution.
