To make a custom level for a classic first-person shooter, choose the exact game and engine first, then use an editor that supports that game’s map format, test the result in the runtime players will use, and distribute only files and assets you are allowed to share. Doom has the clearest documented beginner workflow: a Doom-compatible data file, a source port, and a level editor are separate requirements. The same principle applies to other classic FPS families, but their editors, formats, engines, and publishing rules must be checked independently.

What you need before opening an editor

A playable custom level is not made by the editor alone. For the Doom family, RAMP’s 2026 mapping guide identifies three separate components:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Game data: a copy of DOOM2.WAD or FREEDOOM2.WAD, depending on the target and the rights you have.
  • Editor: a Doom map editor such as Ultimate Doom Builder or SLADE3. Eureka is another free option for Doom and related games.
  • Runtime: a source port or engine that loads the map and provides the behavior you are targeting.

These components solve different problems. The editor creates map geometry and gameplay objects; the data file supplies the game’s resources; and the runtime interprets the map while you play it. A map can open successfully in an editor yet fail in the intended engine if it uses the wrong format, unsupported features, or missing resources.

Freedoom is a free-data alternative for Doom-compatible projects. Its documentation stresses that Freedoom supplies game data, not the engine itself, so a separate engine or source port is still required. Freedoom aims to support many Doom modifications, but its project rules govern its own content and do not grant permission to redistribute assets from unrelated games.

Choose the target before you choose features

Compatibility is the first design decision, not a finishing step. Decide which game, engine or source port, and compatibility level your audience should use. For Doom, the important choice is whether to stay within original-game capabilities or target a later format such as Universal Doom Map Format (UDMF).

Original-game mapping

Original-game mapping aims to use features available in the classic game and its close-compatible environments. This is the conservative choice when you want a level to work with a vanilla-oriented runtime. It also imposes older limits and behavior, so the editor must be configured for the corresponding game and format.

UDMF and later features

UDMF exposes newer map features supported by appropriate source ports. Those features can provide more expressive geometry and behavior, but a map that depends on them will not automatically run in a vanilla-compatible environment. Select the format in the editor before building, and tell players which runtime is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the target affects the whole project

Target selection determines which editor configuration, map format, line and sector properties, test engine, and distribution instructions are appropriate. Changing the target after construction can require replacing unsupported features rather than simply saving the same file in another format.

Select an editor that fits your game and computer

Ultimate Doom Builder and SLADE3

RAMP names Ultimate Doom Builder and SLADE3 as examples of Doom editing tools. Verify that the current release supports the game, map format, and operating system you intend to use. An editor’s name alone does not establish support for every source port or every classic FPS.

Eureka

Eureka is a free editor for classic Doom and related games, including Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. Its project information lists Linux, Windows, and macOS support, a 3D preview, multiple undo and redo levels, a built-in node builder, and an IWAD requirement. Those features make it a viable option for a multi-platform setup, but its project page does not establish that it is the best choice for every beginner or target game.

Editor selection checklist

  • Confirm support for the exact game, not merely a similarly named engine.
  • Confirm the map format: original-game format and UDMF are different targets in Doom.
  • Confirm that the editor can load the required IWAD or equivalent data file.
  • Confirm that its test-launch settings point to the same runtime you will document for players.
  • Use the editor’s built-in error checking and node-building facilities before publishing.

A beginner workflow for a Doom level

The safest first project is a small, complete map rather than a planned megawad. Doom2.net’s introductory guidance recommends learning the editor with a modest project: build rooms, place player starts and items, and save the result as a WAD. The WAD workflow described here is Doom-specific; other classic FPS games may use entirely different files.

1. Install and identify the runtime

Install the source port or engine that matches your target. Record its name and the compatibility mode you will test. If vanilla behavior is the goal, Freedoom recommends Chocolate Doom because it adheres closely to vanilla limits and behavior. A source port intended for advanced features is not a substitute for testing in a vanilla-oriented runtime.

2. Provide the required game data

Point the editor and runtime to a supported IWAD or equivalent game data file. RAMP lists DOOM2.WAD and FREEDOOM2.WAD for its documented setup. Eureka also states that an IWAD is required. Do not assume that installing an editor supplies commercial game data.

3. Create a project with the right format

Start a new map using the intended game and compatibility setting. Choose the original-game format or UDMF before placing advanced features. Name the project clearly and keep an untouched working copy so that experiments can be reversed.

4. Block out a small playable space

Build a few connected rooms and corridors first. Place a player start, basic navigation, and enough items and enemies to exercise the map. Keep the first layout compact so that you can repeatedly rebuild and test it. A small map exposes format and gameplay problems quickly and leaves room to learn the editor’s selection, alignment, texture, and object-placement tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Add progression deliberately

Give the player a readable route through the space. Place keys, doors, switches, exits, and combat encounters only after the basic geometry works. Check that every required object is reachable and that the player cannot become permanently trapped by an interaction that the target runtime does not support.

6. Save the map in the expected package

For Doom, save the custom level as a WAD or as the project format required by the chosen tool, then verify that the runtime can load it separately from the original game data. Do not merge proprietary game resources into the custom file simply because the editor can display them.

Validate the map before sharing it

Validation has two parts: structural checks in the editor and actual play in the intended engine. Passing one does not prove the other.

Run editor checks

  • Run the editor’s error checker and resolve reported geometry, object, and connectivity problems.
  • Rebuild nodes or use the editor’s built-in node builder where applicable.
  • Check that a player start exists and that required exits, keys, switches, and doors are not missing.
  • Confirm that the map uses only features available in the selected format and runtime.

Play in the target runtime

Launch the map in the engine your release instructions will name. Test from a clean start, not only from editor preview. Walk every route, trigger every switch and door, collect progression items, and reach the exit. Repeat after major geometry or scripting changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the intended compatibility level

For a vanilla-compatible Doom release, Freedoom recommends Chocolate Doom and advises checking errors in an editor. Testing only in a more permissive source port can hide problems caused by engine differences or limits. If your map requires UDMF or another later feature set, test in the specific source port that implements those features and state that requirement clearly.

Consider difficulty and multiplayer starts

Freedoom’s contribution guidance calls for skill settings and multiplayer starts where appropriate. If your map is intended for more than one difficulty or for cooperative or deathmatch play, test those modes explicitly. If it is single-player only, say so rather than implying broader support.

Package a release without infringing on game assets

Share the custom map and other material you have permission to redistribute, but keep original proprietary game resources out of the distributed file unless the rights holder’s current terms explicitly allow them.

What to include

  • The custom map file.
  • Any original assets you created yourself and are willing to license.
  • A readme stating the target game, required IWAD or data file, required source port, map format, supported modes, and known limitations.
  • Installation and launch instructions that do not require copying your private game files into the release.

What not to assume

A historical Doom FAQ describes a longstanding distinction between making custom maps and distributing the original game’s resources: a custom PWAD should not include resources from the original DOOM.WAD. That historical documentation is useful context, not a replacement for checking current terms from the relevant rights holder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freedoom’s current contribution guidance requires permission for submitted resources, warns that material labeled “free” may still be limited to non-commercial use, and asks contributors not to copy restricted game assets. Those rules apply to Freedoom submissions, while the underlying permission check is sensible for any project.

Keep the package reproducible

Use a clear filename and version number, preserve the source project separately, and include a short changelog when you upload revisions. Tell players exactly which file to load and where it belongs. Avoid bundling multiple uncertain versions into one archive; ambiguity makes troubleshooting harder.

Ways to publish and get feedback

RAMP submissions

RAMP’s 2026 mapping guide identifies its uploader for WAD submissions. This is a documented route for Doom-related releases. Follow the uploader’s current file and description requirements, and provide the target runtime and compatibility information so other players know how to test the map.

Doom community feedback

Freedoom’s README points contributors toward Doomworld forums and its issue tracker for project submissions and feedback. These routes are suitable for review and contribution discussion, but they are not interchangeable with general-purpose file hosting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freedoom hosting limits

Freedoom states that it cannot provide general web or FTP hosting. If you are distributing an independent project rather than submitting content to Freedoom, you may need a separate file host. Keep the hosted archive and its documentation together, and retain a local backup.

In-game publishing for DOOM + DOOM II

Bethesda’s official DOOM + DOOM II page says players can publish single-player mods on PC and download and play community mods on all platforms through the in-game browser. A Bethesda.net account is required. Nintendo Switch supports only featured mods curated by id, so a mod that is available through the browser on other platforms is not automatically available there. This route is distinct from uploading a standalone WAD to a community site.

Comparison of the documented Doom routes

Decision Option What it means
Data file DOOM2.WAD Use only with the rights and distribution limits that apply to the game data you own; do not package the proprietary file with your map.
Data file FREEDOOM2.WAD Free Doom-compatible game data supplied by Freedoom; an engine or source port is still required.
Map format Original-game features Targets behavior and limits associated with the classic game and vanilla-oriented runtimes.
Map format UDMF or other later features Allows features implemented by compatible source ports; not a vanilla-compatible target by default.
Editor Ultimate Doom Builder or SLADE3 Examples named by RAMP; verify current game, format, and platform support.
Editor Eureka Free, with Linux, Windows, and macOS support listed, plus 3D preview, multiple undo and redo levels, a built-in node builder, and an IWAD requirement.
Vanilla-oriented test runtime Chocolate Doom Recommended by Freedoom when close adherence to vanilla limits and behavior is the goal.
Distribution RAMP uploader Documented WAD-submission route.
Review and contribution Doomworld forums or a project issue tracker Routes identified by Freedoom for discussion and submissions; not necessarily general file hosting.

How to adapt the method to other classic FPS games

The broad sequence—choose a target, install an editor and game data, build a small map, test in the target runtime, package permitted assets, and publish through an active venue—transfers well. Doom-specific details do not.

Confirm the file format

Do not assume that Quake, Build-engine games, Heretic, Hexen, Strife, or another title uses WAD files in the same way Doom does. Identify the game’s map extension, resource packaging rules, and whether the editor writes a native or engine-specific format.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the editor and engine pairing

An editor may support one game in a family but not another, or may support only selected engine versions. Check which executable or source port the editor launches and which features that runtime actually implements.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Confirm distribution rights

Read the current terms for the game and any project whose assets you use. A permission or open-license rule for Freedoom does not authorize redistribution of assets from another game. Keep original data separate unless the relevant rights holder explicitly permits inclusion.

Confirm the active sharing venue

Find the current community uploader, forum, issue tracker, workshop, or in-game browser for the exact game and platform. State the required engine version, map format, dependencies, and supported modes in the release description.

Troubleshooting common failures

The editor opens, but the map will not run

Check that the runtime is using the same game data and compatibility format selected in the editor. A missing IWAD, wrong game profile, unsupported UDMF feature, or malformed map package can each produce this symptom. Re-run the editor’s checks, rebuild nodes, and test with the intended source port rather than a different executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map runs in one port but not another

Compare the features you used with the documented target of each port. If the release is meant to be vanilla-compatible, test with Chocolate Doom as Freedoom recommends. Otherwise, declare the required port and remove any suggestion that the map supports a stricter target.

Players report missing textures or objects

Confirm that the release includes only assets you created or are licensed to distribute, and that the readme identifies the required game data. Do not solve a missing-resource report by copying proprietary resources into the archive without permission.

Players cannot tell how to launch the map

Add the exact map filename, required data file, source port, compatibility mode, and supported game modes to the release notes. Separate installation instructions for the custom file from instructions for obtaining legally licensed game data.

A project is rejected by a community venue

Read that venue’s submission rules, licensing requirements, and technical limits. Freedoom’s contribution process, RAMP’s uploader, and a commercial game’s in-game browser have different scopes; acceptance in one does not guarantee acceptance in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Release checklist

  1. Name the game, engine or source port, and compatibility target.
  2. State whether the map uses original-game features or a later format such as UDMF.
  3. Verify the required IWAD or data file and keep it out of the distributed archive unless explicitly permitted.
  4. Run editor error checks and rebuild nodes where applicable.
  5. Play the complete map in the intended runtime from a clean start.
  6. Test every advertised difficulty and multiplayer mode.
  7. Package the map, permitted custom assets, readme, and version information.
  8. Upload through a documented venue such as RAMP, an appropriate community forum or issue tracker, or the official in-game browser where available.
  9. Keep a backup of the source project and the exact released archive.

Key distinction to remember

The editor, the game data, and the runtime are separate parts of a classic-FPS mapping setup. Your format choice controls compatibility, your test engine determines what actually works, and your distribution package must respect asset permissions. Doom provides a well-documented path through RAMP, Eureka, Freedoom, Chocolate Doom, community forums, and the DOOM + DOOM II browser, but those names and file types should not be treated as universal instructions for every classic shooter.
