To make embroidered merch for a creator brand, choose a product and decoration placement, simplify the artwork for thread, have it digitized for that specific product, inspect the stitch preview, and order a physical sample before launch. Embroidery is not a print file placed on fabric: digitization turns the design into stitch instructions, and the final result depends on thread, placement, and how the artwork translates at its finished size.
1. Choose a product your audience might actually use
Start with one or two product types—such as a hat, hoodie, shirt, bag, or patch—and decide where the embroidery will sit. Product shape and the available embroidery area limit the design, so use the selected provider’s template rather than choosing arbitrary dimensions. Printful says its product templates help keep artwork within the permitted area.
Patches can suit artwork that does not fit naturally on a garment. DigitEMB describes custom embroidered patches, while Printify lists embroidered apparel, hats, bags, and accessories. Those options establish possible product directions, not that any particular item or design will sell well.
2. Prepare artwork that reads clearly in thread
Make a bold, simplified version of your brand mark. Prioritize clear silhouettes, sturdy lettering, and visible separation between shapes. Remove hairline details and tiny text; limit color complexity to the technique and palette available for the exact product.

Use provider measurements as product-specific guidance
For Printful flat and unlimited embroidery, its current design guide specifies minimum text height of 0.25 inches (about 6.35 mm), minimum line thickness of 0.05 inches (about 1.27 mm), and minimum negative space of 0.25 inches (about 6.35 mm). Its standard embroidery uses up to six thread colors from its available palette. Printify’s guide also specifies minimum text height of 0.25 inches (about 6.35 mm) and minimum line thickness of 0.05 inches (about 1.27 mm). These are provider specifications, not universal embroidery standards; requirements vary by product and technique. Check the current product instructions before finalizing the artwork.
Printful describes flat embroidery, 3D puff embroidery on hats, and unlimited-color embroidery on selected products. The eligible items and design constraints differ. For 3D puff, follow its separate guidance for bolder, simpler designs rather than assuming flat-embroidery dimensions apply.
Think in stitch types, not just image shapes
Printful’s file guidance describes run stitch for line detail, satin stitch for outlines, and tatami fill for larger areas. The digitizer’s choices affect how shapes and details render, so a clean image file alone cannot guarantee a clean stitched result.

3. Get the artwork digitized for the item and placement
Digitization converts ordinary artwork, such as a PNG or JPEG, into a stitch file with instructions for stitch type, density, thread paths, and color mapping. It is a production step—not simply saving a logo in a different image format.

Do not assume one stitch file will work unchanged across hats, garments, sizes, placements, or techniques. Printful says a design may need separate digitization depending on embroidery type, product type, or placement. Printify describes digitization by a combination of design, product type, and size. Before building a large product range, ask whether the file can be reused and whether changing the product or placement requires a new or adjusted file.
4. Choose how to produce and sell it
Print-on-demand fulfillment
Printful describes a workflow in which you select an embroidery-ready catalog item, create or upload the design, then order a product or sell through a connected shop. Printify describes choosing an item, designing it in Product Creator, and then publishing or ordering. These are provider-described workflows; confirm current catalog availability, store integrations, fulfillment geography, pricing, and terms on the relevant product pages.

Local embroidery shop or bulk supplier
A local shop or bulk supplier can be an alternative if you want to discuss materials, placement, samples, or a larger run directly. Prices, minimum order quantities, and comparative quality are not established here. Get a quote and request a sample using your actual artwork and garment rather than assuming bulk production will cost less.
Outsourced digitization or custom patches
DigitEMB’s creator page lists digitizing, vector art, custom patches, and apparel, and describes a creator collaboration program. Treat it as a service lead to evaluate, not an endorsement. Verify its current services, terms, and suitability for your design directly.
5. Order and inspect a physical sample
A mockup can show approximate placement, but it cannot tell you whether the stitched design is legible or attractive. Thread thickness, texture, available colors, and digitization all affect the result. Printful notes that its preview may differ from the final product and recommends ordering samples; Printify also advises ordering a sample before listing because its preview may look different.

Inspect the actual item for:
- Whether text and small shapes remain readable at the finished size.
- Thread color and stitch density compared with your expectations.
- Puckering, placement, and how the decoration feels on the garment.
- Whether details or spaces between shapes have disappeared or changed.
If anything is unclear, revise the artwork or placement, request an adjusted digitization, and order another sample before launch.

Compare current, product-specific information instead of relying on a provider’s general embroidery claims.

For the listing, use accurate product details for the garment, decoration, color, placement, and care information provided by the manufacturer. Do not promise durability or exact color matching based only on a preview.

7. Disclose endorsements and material connections
If you endorse a provider on social media, make relevant relationships clear. The Federal Trade Commission’s U.S. staff guidance, Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers, says: “If you endorse a product or service through social media, your endorsement message should make it obvious when you have a relationship – a ‘material connection’ – with the brand.” Such a connection can include payment or a free or discounted product, and the FTC says the influencer is responsible for disclosure. Creators should check the rules that apply in their own jurisdiction and on their platform.
