Use a WooCommerce Variable Product whenever one listing represents several purchasable configurations, such as a game shirt in multiple sizes, a controller skin in different colors, or a collector bundle with different contents. Each variation can have its own price, sale price, SKU, stock, shipping data, image, and description while remaining under one parent product.

This guide shows the complete dashboard workflow, explains when to generate combinations versus adding them manually, covers variation-level inventory, and outlines REST API and bulk-editing approaches for larger catalogs.

What a WooCommerce variation is

A variation is a specific combination of attribute terms that a customer can select and buy. If a hoodie has the attributes Size (Small, Medium, Large) and Color (Black, Red), “Medium / Black” is one variation. WooCommerce’s variable-product system lets you control commercial and fulfillment data for that combination instead of forcing every option to share the parent product’s values.

The parent product holds the shared listing information. Variations can then override details that differ between combinations:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Regular and sale price
  • SKU (stock-keeping unit)
  • Stock-management mode, quantity, availability, and backorders
  • Weight, dimensions, and shipping class
  • Variation image and description
  • Attribute values that define the combination

Choose this product type when customers must select an option before adding the item to the cart. If there is only one sellable configuration, a simple product is usually the more direct setup.

Plan the variation matrix before editing

Write down the attributes, terms, and valid combinations first. This prevents accidental creation of options you do not actually sell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate attributes from terms

An attribute is the category of choice, such as Size or Color. Terms are the selectable values inside it, such as Small, Medium, Large or Black, White, and Red. Every variation uses one term from each attribute that participates in the combination.

Mark combinations that are genuinely sellable

Not every mathematical combination is necessarily a product you stock. For example, a limited-edition game jersey may exist in Medium/Black and Large/Black, but not Small/Black. Decide this before using automatic generation; otherwise you will need to remove or disable invalid rows afterward.

Decide which values differ by variation

List any price, SKU, image, stock, weight, dimensions, or shipping-class differences. If a value is identical for every option, set it at the parent level or apply it with a bulk action instead of editing every row.

Create the variable product in the WooCommerce dashboard

  1. In WordPress, go to Products > Add New Product, or open an existing product you want to convert.
  2. Enter or confirm the product name and the shared description, images, categories, and other parent-level information.
  3. In the Product data panel, open the product-type selector and choose Variable Product.

Changing the type exposes the Attributes and Variations panels. Do not publish yet; define the attributes and combinations first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add attributes and their selectable values

Use a global attribute when values are reused

A global attribute is managed centrally and can be reused across products. It is useful for a catalog with consistent terms such as the same shirt sizes or controller colors. Add the global attribute in the product’s Attributes panel, select the terms that apply, and make sure the attribute is enabled for variations. Save the attributes before moving to the next panel.

Create a product-specific attribute for one-off options

A custom, product-specific attribute is appropriate when the values are unique to this listing, such as “Bundle contents: Base game + map” and “Base game + map + art book.” Add the attribute name, enter its values, enable it for variations, and save.

Check the saved terms

Each attribute must contain the exact terms you want customers to choose. A typo or an omitted term changes the available combinations. If you later alter these attributes after variations exist, WooCommerce warns that the variation definitions may need to be recreated so the combinations continue to work correctly.

Generate every combination or add only selected variations

Open the Variations panel after saving attributes. WooCommerce gives you two fundamentally different creation strategies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generate variations for a complete matrix

Choose Generate variations when every combination is a real, sellable configuration. WooCommerce creates one row for each combination of selected terms. For example, three sizes multiplied by two colors produces six rows.

Generation is efficient, but it can create unwanted combinations if some sizes or colors are unavailable together. Review every generated row and delete, disable, or correct combinations you do not sell.

Add variations manually for a selective matrix

Choose Add manually when only specific combinations exist. Select the attribute term for each dimension and create one variation at a time. This takes longer initially but avoids a large list of invalid or misleading choices.

Manual creation is also useful when a product has unusual rules, such as a physical collector edition available only in one size or a color offered only with a particular bundle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complete each variation’s commercial and fulfillment data

Expand a variation row to reveal its fields. Treat each row as an independently sellable SKU when your inventory or operations require that level of tracking.

Set regular and sale prices

Enter the variation’s regular price. Add a sale price only where that specific combination is discounted. A variation without the required price cannot be purchased normally, so check that every enabled row has a valid price before publishing.

Assign a unique SKU where your process needs one

A SKU is the unique identifier used to search for and track a product or variation. Give each combination its own SKU when warehouse, fulfillment, reporting, or integrations distinguish them. Use a consistent naming pattern, such as TEE-BLK-M, but choose a convention that matches your existing operation and keep it unique.

Configure stock and backorders

Choose whether the variation manages stock independently. With variation-level stock management enabled, enter that combination’s quantity and availability. You can also configure whether the variation is in stock, out of stock, or allowed to accept backorders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If independent management is not enabled, stock can be shared through the parent configuration described in WooCommerce’s guide. Shared stock is simpler when all options draw from one pool; independent quantities are safer when each size, color, or bundle has its own physical inventory.

Add weight, dimensions, and shipping class

Enter variation-specific weight and dimensions when packages differ. Assign a shipping class if freight rules vary by combination. Leave shared values at the parent level when every option ships identically, but verify that the value inherited by the variation matches your carrier and fulfillment process.

Choose an image

Assign a variation image when the customer needs to see the selected color, edition, or bundle. A black and a white controller skin, for example, should not both display the same product photo if that could cause a fulfillment mistake.

Add a variation description when the choice needs explanation

Use the variation description for details that apply only to that configuration. Keep general product information in the parent description so it is not duplicated across rows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use bulk actions to finish repeated values

When multiple variations share a price, stock status, shipping class, or another setting, use the variation bulk-action controls rather than opening every row individually. Apply the action to the intended set, then inspect the rows afterward. Bulk changes are fast but can overwrite an exception, such as one premium size with a higher price, so make exceptions after the bulk operation.

Save, preview, test, and publish

  1. Save the attributes and variation changes in the editor.
  2. Confirm every intended combination is enabled and every unintended combination is removed or disabled.
  3. Check that each purchasable variation has the correct price and a deliberate stock or backorder state.
  4. Review the image, SKU, shipping data, and description for each combination where those values matter.
  5. Preview the product page and select options as a customer would. Verify that the displayed price, image, availability, and add-to-cart behavior change correctly.
  6. Publish the product, or update it if it already exists.

Choose the right inventory model

Independent variation inventory

Use independent management when stock is physically separated by combination. A store with 4 black shirts in Medium and 0 black shirts in Large should be able to sell the Medium row without making the Large row appear available. Enter the quantity and status on each variation and monitor those rows individually.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Shared parent inventory

Use shared stock when every option consumes the same inventory pool and you do not need a separate count for each combination. This reduces data entry, but it cannot represent a situation in which one size or color sells out before the others.

Backorders as a deliberate policy

Backorders are a variation-level choice in the API schema and dashboard fields. Enable them only when your fulfillment process can explain the expected delay and honor the promise shown to customers.

REST API automation for variations

The WooCommerce REST API supports creating, viewing, updating, deleting, and batch-managing individual variations. This is useful when product data originates in an ERP, spreadsheet transformation, game-merchandise database, or another catalog system.

Variation data you can automate

The variation schema includes regular and sale prices, SKU, stock-management mode, stock quantity, in-stock state, backorders, weight, dimensions, shipping class, image, and attributes. Treat the parent product and its child variations as related records: create or identify the variable parent, then send the attribute selections and per-variation values for each child.

Safe API workflow

  1. Create or confirm the parent product as a variable product and define its global or non-global attributes.
  2. Record the parent identifier returned by WooCommerce.
  3. Create each valid variation with its attribute terms, price, SKU, inventory settings, and fulfillment data.
  4. Store the returned variation identifiers in your source system so later updates target the correct rows.
  5. Use updates for price, stock, images, or shipping changes rather than creating duplicate variations.
  6. Use batch operations for repeatable catalog maintenance, then verify a sample of products on the storefront.

Authenticate the integration with the credentials and permissions required by your WooCommerce installation, validate that attribute terms match the parent product, and handle API errors before marking a synchronization complete. Keep unique SKUs in the source data so retries do not silently create duplicates.

Bulk editing for a large catalog

Manual editing is practical for a small number of products, but a large catalog benefits from WooCommerce’s Bulk Product Editor. WooCommerce documents this tool for bulk operations that include converting simple products into variable products and editing attributes and variations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When bulk editing is a good fit

  • You are converting many existing simple products to variable products.
  • The same attribute structure applies to a group of listings.
  • Prices, SKUs, stock states, or shipping values follow a repeatable rule.
  • You need to make a catalog-wide correction without opening products one by one.

When to keep changes manual or scripted

  • Only a few combinations are valid and every product has different exceptions.
  • Each variation needs a distinct image or description selected by a human.
  • Inventory changes continuously and should come from a source-of-truth system.
  • You need repeatable imports, scheduled synchronization, or audit logs; in those cases, an API integration is usually more controllable.

Regardless of the tool, export or otherwise preserve your current identifiers and verify a sample after the operation. A bulk edit that changes attributes can invalidate existing combinations.

Maintenance rules after publishing

Changing attributes

When you add, remove, rename, or reorder attribute terms after variations have been created, revisit the variation list. WooCommerce notes that variations may need to be redefined so the combinations work correctly. Do not assume an old variation automatically maps to a newly changed term.

Products with more than 30 variations

WooCommerce documents changed dynamic-dropdown behavior for products with more than 30 variations. Test the live selector on a product above that threshold and confirm that customers can still choose a valid combination. If the interface does not behave as expected, check the product’s variation definitions, enabled states, and theme or extension compatibility before publishing a change.

Routine variation audit

  • Every intended combination exists exactly once.
  • Invalid combinations are removed or disabled.
  • Each enabled variation has a price.
  • Stock quantity, stock status, and backorder policy match physical availability.
  • SKUs are unique where your operating process requires them.
  • Images show the selected option accurately.
  • Weight, dimensions, and shipping class match the package that will be sent.
  • Attribute changes have not left orphaned or mismatched rows.

Troubleshoot common variation failures

The variation selector shows no usable choices

Reopen Attributes and confirm that the terms are saved and enabled for variations. Then inspect the variation rows to ensure at least one matching combination exists and is enabled.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A customer can select an option but cannot buy it

Expand the selected variation and check for a missing price, an out-of-stock status, or a backorder setting that does not match your policy. Also confirm that the combination is not disabled while its attributes remain visible.

The wrong image or price appears

Open the specific variation rather than the parent product and correct its image or price. Save, clear any applicable page or object cache, and retest the same selections in a private browser window.

Stock is deducted from the wrong place

Determine whether the variation is using independent stock management or the parent’s shared pool. Enable variation-level management and enter a quantity for each combination when sizes, colors, or bundles have separate physical counts.

New attribute terms do not match old variations

After changing terms, redefine the affected combinations. Delete obsolete rows, create the intended rows again, and verify their prices, SKUs, images, and stock before updating the product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The variation list is too large to maintain

Reconsider whether every generated combination is sellable. Replace automatic generation with manually selected combinations when appropriate, then evaluate the Bulk Product Editor or REST API for repeatable updates. Check current compatibility, support, pricing, and any affiliate relationship before adopting an extension or external editor.

Dashboard, API, or bulk editor: a practical choice

Approach Best for Strengths Trade-offs
Dashboard Small catalogs and products with visual or unusual exceptions Immediate visual review; straightforward image, price, and stock editing Time-consuming for many products or repeated changes
REST API or CLI-based integration Connected systems, scheduled synchronization, and repeatable updates Automates creation and updates; supports individual and batch variation management Requires development, authentication, validation, error handling, and identifier tracking
Bulk Product Editor Large groups sharing predictable attribute or variation changes Converts and edits products in bulk without hand-editing every row Broad changes can overwrite exceptions; attribute changes still require verification

Choose based on catalog size, whether every attribute combination is valid, inventory complexity, the number of unique images or prices, how often data changes, and how much maintenance effort your team can absorb.

A launch checklist for game and merchandise stores

  1. Define the attributes and valid combinations for the item.
  2. Choose global attributes for reusable terms and custom attributes for one-off choices.
  3. Select Variable Product in Products > Add New Product > Product data.
  4. Save attributes and choose generation or manual creation deliberately.
  5. Give each variation its price, SKU, stock policy, quantity, image, and shipping data.
  6. Use bulk actions only after identifying exceptions.
  7. Save and preview every important combination on the storefront.
  8. Retest after any attribute change, especially when the product has more than 30 variations.
  9. For catalogs that outgrow manual work, adopt a validated bulk or API process and retain variation identifiers.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
