To crossfade prerecorded clips in a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, keep OBS Studio streaming and transition between scenes: put the outgoing clip in one scene, the next clip in another, then use OBS’s configurable Fade transition. A playlist in OBS’s VLC Video source can play files in sequence, but its documented playlist controls do not include automatic crossfades between items.
Choose the right OBS setup
An OBS playlist and an OBS scene transition solve different problems. A VLC Video source can play a list of local media files, with options such as looping and shuffling. To fade deliberately from one clip to another, use separate scenes and transition between them.

Prepare your clips and scenes
- Install OBS Studio. If you plan to use a VLC Video source, install VLC too. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Decide whether you need a playlist or individual scene control. For a simple queue, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist. Leave shuffle off for a fixed order; enable looping only if the sequence should repeat. Its documented default visibility behavior is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible, so choose this setting deliberately.
- For crossfades, make a scene for each clip. Add a Media Source for each local video file, or another suitable source. OBS documents local video support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Keep each scene’s framing consistent with your intended broadcast layout.
- Set the transition. In OBS’s Scene Transitions controls, select Fade and choose a duration appropriate to the footage. OBS also lists Cut, Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. The exact duration is a creative choice; preview it with your clips rather than assuming one value will suit every edit.
- Use Studio Mode for planned handoffs. Prepare the incoming scene in the preview, then take it live using the selected transition when the outgoing clip is ready to end. OBS describes Studio Mode as a way to prepare a different scene before putting it on air. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Keep the YouTube broadcast running through the handoff
Start the OBS stream as usual and leave streaming output active while you switch scenes. Changing the program scene changes the content OBS sends; it does not require ending the YouTube broadcast. Before relying on the sequence, check OBS’s stream status and YouTube’s live preview. OBS’s Help Portal provides help for connection and streaming issues.
YouTube’s ingest protocol is separate from your local scene transition. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than continuously like RTMP; that latency distinction does not mean an OBS scene change requires a new broadcast. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Check picture and sound before going live
A scene Fade is a visual transition control, not a guarantee of gapless playback between media files. The OBS documentation describes playlist and transition controls but does not promise gapless decoding for every file or computer setup. Preview the complete sequence using the actual clips, including the last-to-first handoff if the playlist loops.
- Check that each clip starts at the intended point and that the sequence order is correct.
- Confirm framing and aspect ratio in the YouTube preview.
- Listen through every handoff. Scene transitions may affect source audio, but the documentation does not prescribe a universal audio-crossfade setup for every arrangement.
- If uninterrupted music matters, one practical production option is to prepare a continuous audio bed and test it with the video transitions. This is not a feature or guarantee of the playlist setting.
When to use a custom transition
For a designed wipe or branded blend rather than a basic Fade, OBS supports track-matte stinger transitions. The matte’s gray values allow a degree of blending between scenes. OBS notes that it does not support lock-step video decoding for separate track-matte and stinger files and recommends combining those assets into one file. This is an advanced option; it is unnecessary for a straightforward crossfade.
